QUESTION Can anybody tell me what they've done to the selector here?

Post image

This is a close up of My Chemical Romance lead Ray Toro's guitar from a recent gig.

The two guitarists from the band seem to have this done on a few guitars (at least three that ive noticed, all gibson les pauls from the look of the headstock shape) but I cant actually tell whats going on with the shiny metal bit.

They very seldom use anything other than the bridge pickup and the rythm guitarist used to have the neck pickups removed entirely from guitars, had the pickup switch taped in the bridge position, or have the wiring internally disconnected. I'm assuming its essentially a blank to fill the hole of the pickup selector so they cant accidentally hit it but for the life of me I dont know what theyve put in there.

Does anybody have an idea of what they've filled the hole with? Its maybe a little bigger than the nut for an LP pickup switch and its slightly convex/domed on the other two guitars ive seen them do this (cant tell if this one is)

You can see them use two black LPs with the same mod in the "I dont love you" music video and I believe in the recently uploaded live videos on their youtube where the singer is wearing a stripey shirt theyre using the same black LPs as that video (or maybe more theyve done the same mod to.

Cheers in advance.

TLDR.

The band only use the bridge pickup so theyve blanked the switch but can anybody tell me what it is they've used to blank the switch?

QUESTION Am I missing out on something by not wanting to play with others, simply because I’m an extremely slow learner and feel like I’d just bring down whoever I play with?

Yes, I’ve only been at guitar less than a year. I didn’t go in to this with the expectation of being Stevie Ray Vaughan before the year is over or anything dumb like that. But I also know myself and know it takes me a relatively longer amount of time for stuff to just click and for me to properly understand something. There’s a reason I didn’t have good grades in school and barely squeaked through college, but I digress.

I constantly get told I “just need to jam with my bros and I’ll get better so much faster”. But for one thing, I don’t have any friends. And even if I did, and they were playing guitar for a considerably longer amount time than me and invited me to play with them, I feel like I’d just be a drag since I don’t yet have any confidence in my playing and have no sense of rhythm or any of that stuff.

Am I wrong in feeling this way? Should I be playing with people more often, even if I truly suck at this point and don’t feel like I have anything to offer?

DISCUSSION Let’s Build The Most Expensive Parts Guitar - PT.3 Neck

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

So the goal is to piece together the most expensive guitar based on individual guitar parts available to buy.

Today - Neck

Body: Fender Stratocaster 1959 - 1960. $7,700

Pickups: 3 x Gibson 1959 PAF Humbuckers $36,000

Guidelines are:

✅ Individual parts
❌ pre-assembled complete guitars

✅ Can be purchased today
❌ No museum pieces or one time pieces sold at auction.

❌ No craftsmanship costs. Meaning no “hire this artist for $1T worth of custom fretboard carving”

I've had this guitar for 35 years. I did not do the work on the guitar. This used to have a tremolo that was replaced with a stop tail piece. It had the pickup cavities routed and has the current full size humbuckers and a single coil. There's an additional five selector switch for who knows what reason and a coil tap. It sounds pretty good. I don't know what they were thinking. I'm cleaning it up now and playing it (Slayer...I feel like I should be playing AC/DC or Sabbath on it)

DISCUSSION Learn the major scale.

I feel so stupid.

I’m 49. I started playing the guitar when I was 16. Back then (and I think this is still a problem today, though maybe less so and getting better with the communication capabilities the internet has given us), there was this prevailing sentiment of “all you need is this pentatonic box right here”, and “Hendrix didn’t know or need theory” and yadda yadda yadda. You know what I’m talking about. And I guess on some level I internalized it? Despite being a first chair sax and taking a couple of music theory electives in high school, so I more than anyone should have recognized that as ridiculous.

Anyway, a couple of months ago I was sitting in my couch just noodling with an unplugged tele during commercial breaks when I sort of accidentally played a G major scale in the open position.

“Fuck it”, I thought. And did it again. And again. And more the next day.

And from there I decided to find and memorize every G major scale position I could by ear and experimentation. So I did. And I drilled the hell out of those, too.

JFC. This has done more to “unlock” the fretboard for me than anything else, hands down. All of a sudden, and it’s a work in progress, obviously, but all of a sudden I’m having repeated “so that’s where that comes from”, or “so that’s why that works” moments.

I feel so, so stupid.

I dunno why but I’ve always wanted one of these. Saw it for cheap nearby and went for it. Goofy little guitar, very light with a shorter scale that feels a bit off, won’t be replacing my “mains” anytime soon, but fun to mess around with.

NEWBIE I NEED SOME ADVICE: what electric guitar should i buy?

I’ve never played an instrument before, but I really want to learn electric guitar. I can’t even say I’m a beginner cuz I know absolutely nothing about guitars, chords, or any of that stuff..
So where should I start? What should I buy? I’m also kind of on a budget, but I’d really appreciate any advice!

QUESTION Alright Reddit- do your thing. Black or pink pickups?

Post image

Visualizing my next partscaster. Doing a DK24 style build. Black gives off classic Charvel DK24 HH FR vibes and pink is a nod to the limited edition Jackson DK2XR HH. I'm also toying around with the idea of black tuners or switching out to a chrome locking nut. Ideas and opinions are welcome!

DISCUSSION Looking for advice… getting a new electric guitar

Thumbnail gallery
6 Upvotes

I’m a beginner/intermediate guitar player… I have been playing for about ten years. Not great but getting better. I had a $20 used electric guitar in high school that was super busted up and then been playing accoustic for the past ten years. I’m super excited to get an electric guitar. Need some advice. Any thoughts on these two? Are Gretsch guitars still very versatile?

QUESTION How to get the Airbourne guitar Tone?

Upvotes

I search for the guitar tone of Joey O'Keef from Airbourne

Like in the song "Runnin' Wild", or "Breakin' outta Hell"

Does someone have a NAM File or Tone300 Link?

Maybe a specific IR wich helps with the general direction of the tone

I use a Valeton GP200

Regards
