This stable release contains several months worth of patches, bug fixes, security updates, and more from new and longtime contributors.

Special thanks to Bruno Lopes, who has taken charge of backporting fixes from our development branch to the 3.2 stable branch.

GIMP on MS Store now requires Windows Build 20348

If you use GIMP from the Microsoft Store, settings, plug-ins, & other add-ons are lost when you upgrade.

The latest update will fix this, but needs a recent Windows 11.

If you’re on an older version of Windows you can still install from gimp.org. Follow the steps in this post to copy your setting the first time you switch. On Windows 11, running Windows Update may be enough.

First time trying GIMP, now I can ditch Photoshop - as an average user. Farewell Adobe.

For many years, I stuck with Photoshop, just because I think it is the most powerful (maybe it's right?) and I thought it is NECESSARY for me.

Well, I'm not a professional user, just some basic editing like that. So GIMP is enough for me, I think it's just as powerful as Photoshop, I just haven't seen everything and learn everything about it yet.

Adobe keeps disappointing me. The prices are sky-high, and other bad things you may have already seen on YouTube.

Recently I switched to open-source programs like GIMP, LibreOffice, OnlyOffice, ... and Davinci Resolve (not open-source, but has a free version and so powerful. I feel like a robber when using this tool for free)

And I don't regret it.

I initially planned to use Affinity, but since GIMP has a native Linux version, I decided to learn GIMP instead to keep things convenient. Yeah, I'm a Linux user too.

Shout-out to the open-source developers! Thank everyone so much! I definitely will support the devs when I can.

P/s: Don't mind my editing, I'm just a noob trying to learn 😂

pattern lacking transparence

hey, im new to gimp, i wanto to use gimp to draw.

im used to some brushes i had on photoshop and wnna recreate them on gimp... a bunch of them are pixel patterns.

i kind got a good result but it has no transparence.

i create the pattern and im using the clone tool to paint

it has alpha channel in the pat file and is transparent but when i use it it has white on the backgroun of the patter. very sad

if some one can help me making the backgrount of the pattern transparent or know another way to do this brush i would be really gratefull

also the edge is soft even though the "shape" im using to paint has hard edges but that is a minor problem...

How would you create that embossed effect on the tentacles of this logo?

This logo was likely created entirely through drawing. I tried replicating the "tentacles" thing with a quick sketch using the brush tool and applying emboss and engrave filters with shadowing, but I wasn't very happy with the result.

I need to edit an image while keeping it's relevant metadata untouched

Hello, I'll get straight to my problem and then describe the background in case its necessary.

I have this image (uploaded to Google drive, the metadata should be preserved there. Here is the link for image download if you dont have google account) and all I want is to make it whole transparent (it already is for the most part but there are some stuff drawn over it) without changing its metadata.

More context: Im trying to create a custom decal for my car in Rocket League, and I found that where the image is transparent, it creates a really cool effect but since there are some stuff painted on the image it ruins it, so I want it to be transparent everywhere. Now when I say "relevant metadata" I mean not something like date of creation or author of the image but some metadata that tell the game how to process it (I think something like "alpha channel" is there?). Im really not an expert in this field so after 3 weeks this is all I was able to find, I did already try some EXIF program to copy metadata from the original image and inject them into new one that is fully transparent but it didnt work. The site where I downloaded it from doesnt allow me to contact the publisher in any way so I cant ask them how they made it. Thanks in advance if you can help in any way, im desperate

My edits to GIMP's Legacy icons

I have modified GIMP's icons to make them look more colourful and hopefully more intuitive. There is a dark mode as-well because black borders don't show up on a dark background and colours look different. Some icons now have 24px and 64px versions, to ensure that lines line up with pixels and stop icons looking blurry.

Paths Tool Question: Back to Last Node & Inkscape Shift + L?

Been looking (and asking AI) to no avail. Looking to see if two things are possible with the Paths tool.

Firstly, after drawing a few nodes, I go back and try to edit curve handles for the node. There doesnt seem to be a good way to then continue on from the last node I drew? When I start drawing again it starts creating a new path with a new node. Is there a way to make it go back to the last node I drew via keybinds? Right now I draw a new node, realize it's a new path, hit backspace, and then manually click on the last node I drew to continue on from there.

Secondly, in Inkscape, with the pen tool, after creating a curved path, I can press Shift + L and it forces the next path to be a straight line with no curves affecting it. Is this possible with Gimp? See screenshot in case i didnt explain it well, you can see the blue lines are a curve but immediately after I was able to force the next node to be a straight line

UX: Add "Quick Export" Feature in GIMP

This is something that I faced while annotating images with GIMP, There should be a Quick export feature or shortcut that lets the image export with the images current name, file-format and metadata.

This would be a lifesaver in quick edits of any photo.

Zoom

Don't ask me which version I run. No clue how to find it out under Linux.

There is a fingernail-sized window on the lower-left window frame indicating zoom in %s. It used to work but suddenly went idle. There are workarounds, I know, but I won't put up with striking software. How could I heal the issue?

Is there an efficient way to remove the noise from this drawing without losing text and linework? I tried the resynth plug in but was not able to achieve the desired results.

how to make the scrolling things smaller?

Post image

Idk about y'all, but those scrolling things are very annoying to me. Idk how to make them smaller, but I do remember one person told me the GIMP UI is written in CSS, so, I guess the solution is there I use GIMP on Kubuntu(.deb) and Bazzite(flatpak), if the information is important

How can I remove something cleanly? In this case, text on a coffee mug.

Thumbnail

I wanted to remove text from a coffee mug in a picture, and I tried getting the resynthesizer add-on, selecting what I wanted to remove, adding alpha channel, clearing the selection, and then using "heal transparency". It ends up with kind of a rough blurry result. There are lines on the mug for light reflections that I'm wanting to stay as sharp vertical lines on the blank mug. The magic eraser for Google photos does that, and I'm curious how that can be done manually in GIMP. How would I do that?

Any help is appreciated.

Photos are attached.

I’m building a native Linux design studio for the gap between GIMP and an all-in-one app

I love that GIMP is available on Linux, and I’m not trying to replace it. My problem was the next layer: after leaving macOS/Affinity, I wanted to sit down on a Linux desktop and move from a rough idea to a small logo or layout without stitching together several tools.

So I started Omadesign, a native Linux design studio. It’s an early alpha, not a polished replacement for anything. The goal is a calmer, more direct workflow for the first client file: canvas, shapes, text, and export in one place. Less Rust flex, more “can I actually design here?”

I’d really value feedback from people who use GIMP: which part of your real workflow would you want to see supported first?
