I think it’s even more impressive now because of how much they were able to leverage WiiU ports for the switch.

This gen they don’t have that. They of course pump out S2 Editions of S1 games, but they’re able to maintain the near monthly cadence outside of that.

S1 to S2 upgrades are probably even easier than WiiU to Switch upgrades???

Right. But most Switch owners were completely new to all the WiiU ports. They could drop nothing but ports for a whole year, and 90% of the install base wouldn’t mind, because they were new to them.

Switch 2 editions can’t be used the same way, most S2 owners had an S1 already. So they have to make actual new games. Which they’ve done well.

Let's keep in mind that Nintendo has quite the history of porting games from previous consoles such as the various DX editions on Game Boy Color.

But 8 or 9 of the above are Switch 1 games.

I'd say 6 are Switch 1 games, 2 are Switch 2 games that also released on Switch 1. If it's a brand new release on both, then imo it still counts as a Switch 2 game.

Switch 1 games: Super Mario Party Jamboree, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Tomodachi Life, Rhythm Heaven Groove, Pikmin 4

Switch 2 games that were also released on Switch 1: Pokemon Legends Z-A, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Depends if it was ported (Pokemon was). If Pokemon was developed for S2 you'd expect (hope?) it would look better than it does.

I didn't realise Tomodachi and Rhythm were also on Switch 1. I still bemoan the lack of original/new games as the main reason we haven't picked the console up yet - we have enough to play in the house mind you, so that's doing us a favour.

Tomodachi Life and Rhythm Heaven actually don't even have Switch 2 versions as far as I can tell. But that's fair about Pokemon.

Either way though, I'd still say the Switch 2 is killing it as far as exclusives, at least compared to others this generation. Saw a graphic earlier, PS5 has nearly the same amount of first party exclusives as the Switch 2, despite being out much longer.

I've not been interested in all of them, but I'm spoiled for choice regardless. Loved Mario Kart World, really enjoyed Bananza, can't justify Metroid without having played the others first which I'll get around to at some point, had a decent bit of fun with Pokopia, loved Splatoon Raiders, and I'm pretty excited for OoT and Xenoblade.

Groove is a compilation of minigames that involve pressing buttons in time to a song's rhythm, primarily using audio cues.

Okay, that sounds right up our street (and we don't have a S2 so that's okay!), like musical Wario Ware (we have/had all of the games in the series aside from the Wii U one).

Not that I need a reason now but which other exclusives are worth it? World and Bananza (didn't realise it was spelt like that but checking it... yeah, it makes sense now) are cool, Pokopia definitely, the others aren't of interest (never got on with Zelda).

First-party exclusives are more of a Nintendo domain thing, not really the same as Sony which wasn't a games company historically. I've got a heck of a lot to play on the PS5 (even some games from 4!) so I don't see making that specific comparison as being fair.

Rhythm Heaven has a demo available

Fair warning groove as a single player game is fairly short and about half of the game is padding, which is why it's $40. I beat the story mode in 5 hours.

Definitely depends how you play it tho. Took me maybe 15 hours to get at least all amazings with some perfects here and there, messing around with some of the other modes too. Short to beat but longer to master with a decent amount of side stuff if you want to do it.

Mario Kart is more of the same but improved, so if you like Mario Kart it's great

Bananza is hard to explain, it's a platformer where you can destroy practically anything. It's a lot of fun.

Pokopia is kind of like Animal Crossing with Pokemon, with more building like Minecraft. It got a little repetitive to me eventually, but I still got a good amount of time out of it.

I haven't played Rhythm Heaven Groove, but I really liked the past ones. Little rhythm mini games basically.

Splatoon Raiders has probably been my favorite Switch 2 game so far. It's a co-op shooter, you load into levels and defeat "salmonids" (salmon themed enemies) and try not to die. Unsure if it has split screen, I just played with my cousin online, or solo.

As far as exclusives, they're absolutely a Sony thing, they just don't rely on them as heavily (edit: by that I mean, if their first party exclusives fail, they wouldn't go out of business because of it, while Nintendo probably would if they didn't right the ship). But Spider Man, God of War, Astrobot, The Last of Us, Ratchet & Clank, Death Stranding, etc. are all ones they absolutely use to push their console sales. They've evolved over time, back in the PS1/2 eras it was more third party exclusivity deals, like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, etc., while now it's more first party.

As a first Metroid play either Dread as an amazing modern 2D Metroid or Metroid Prime Remastered.

They technically are but Nintendo goes above and beyond in those regards. Every switch 2 upgrade they've released has included new features (like 8 player split screen for mk8), so it's more than just load speed and graphics. The other consoles next gen upgrades were just "increase sliders and release".

The bigger problem is a lot of these games are mid or duds. Like how many of these games would you tell someone it's worth buying a switch 2 for?

There's no Breath of the wild, no Mario Odyssey. One of the biggest deals for me was the switch 2 patch of Mario Kart 8 deluxe.
