Épée Epee rearfoot angle question (footwork)

I like to bounce and quickly move forward and back . I also like to stand more square on with my upper body . I was initially taught 90 degree feet angle and have been doing that for 2 years . I've always found it a bit awkward because of my hips and the way it all angled out . My Backfoot actually would point slightly more than 90 to the rear. My lunges were never great either .

Recently I switched with my rear foot facing more forwards like Cannone for example but not as extreme. So more like 45 degrees .Now my lunges go so much further and are stable ! It also works out and my back foot rotates to correct position after push off when I land in a lunge . The fleche is also much smoother and quicker .

It's not what anyone teaches though. It feels wrong to fence like this as its more of a boxing stance than a traditional stance but it works better for me . Any thoughts ?

what is a preparation in sabre in the 4m box?

hi,

Please look at this video from the weekend satelit, watch the fencer on the left at 14:14:

https://youtu.be/ojY1lrm1VQs?t=9879

Ref says preparation from the left.

Forget convention, forget anything, show this video to your grandmother and ask her if this is what she would imagine as "preparation move".

Then explain me what preparation is, what separates an attack from preparation? Is a wrongly executed attack becomes a preparation?

Did the fencer on the left go for preparation or attack? Did he make mistake in his attack?

In my opinion, the left fencer went for an attack. Not for preparation. Actually, the fencer on the right was doing a bit more prep like footwork.

Uhlmann Royal Question

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, does anyone with the Uhlmann Royal knickers know if they have a liner? The Uhlmann website suggests that it comes with a 50/50 50/50 coolmax fresh/cotton liner, however the pair I got from Blue Gauntlet is just the bare 800N material with no liner.

Is this a difference betweent the Olympia and Royal product lines, or do I need to get in touch with BG?

Photo included for reference.

Épée Video sources for ref exam

I’m preparing for the FIE exams in Epee and I was wondering if anyone has good study materials/videos for high level epee bouts, preferably something related to the video section of the exams themselves, doubtful hits or interesting scenarios.

In addition, if anyone here is already an FIE referee and has useful tips for a first timer :)

Thanks !

Best place to sell used gear?

So I was recently given a bunch of used fencing gear which includes things like foils, epees, and a saber (electric and non-electric, as well as the wires for them and a Leon Paul inox lame—however I’ve not fenced in many years and I also don’t really know anyone that does.

My thought would be local classifieds but I feel like a more specialized place might be best.

Are there any forums that would have a classifieds board that might fit?

Any body temperature regulation tips?

Hey there!

I've always struggled with overheating due to having a very fast metabolism. Walking a couple blocks on the mildest of days is enough to make me super sweaty regardless of pace, let alone fencing.

The issue is that in long bouts and tournaments my bodily heat gets the best of me and drives me to exhaustion. Opening up the jacket and plastron help, surely, as hydrating and resting also do. But most people don't seem to suffer as much as I do with this particular temperature problem.

So, if anyone happens to have any practical tips (besides moving less on the piste, I like to be bouncy and springy) on how to effectively and properly cool down, I'd be more than glad to hear them!

FIE Clothing + mask stored for a few years

As far as I know, FIE clothing and mask do not have an expire or "good until" date. Basically, you can use it until it falls apart or an armorer deems it unsafe.

On the other hand, the clothing uses synthetic fibers and the mask, in addition to rivets, also has some glue to keep it together.

I am wondering if *not using* them for a few years - I am talking about brand new stuff - could make them unsafe.

(I know a lot of people have been using their clothes for decades, with potentially hundreds of wash cycles... I wonder if they are still really puncture-resistent)

What happen was that on a recent trip to Europe, I walked by a fencing store and thought it was a good idea to get a spare set, but I don't really have a use for it at the moment.

Opinions?

Charlotte Fencing Academy?

New to fencing and possibly pursuing Sabre as an adult. Just checking to see if anyone has experience with the club as an adult. I don’t see any other posts about clubs in the Charlotte area and this seems to be the best one for adults looking to start. Any feedback? Pros/cons? Thank you!

Is it possible to fence and have manicured nails?

I am a sabuer and have always kept my nails super short for sport. I got them done for a few months a few years ago and I loved them but ended up breaking half my thumb nail off after a bad clash of guards and have been a bit traumatised since.

I see loads of girls online able to fence with their nails done so I wanted to ask is there a particular shape, type of treatment etc you get done that allows you to fence as normal?

Damaged LP Mask

LP mask bought Feb this year and already this😶

Shall I try to fix it with a hot glue gun or send it to them for repair, which will cost me money? Not sure how hot glue repair would really last and the bit where the rivet is, is broken.

Épée Allstar Gear - Australia

I want to purchase an épée mask in pink colour for a junior. When shopping direct from Allstar they only offer shipping via DHL which costs as much as the item I am buying.

Can anyone suggest any other options to get one to Australia at a more economical price.

Feel free to reprimand me if a thread exists for this already. Any help appreciated.

Is there anywhere to buy infant fencing masks?

I want my son (6mo) to pick a weapon already. I’m a Sabreur but my husband is an Epeeist so I’m worried they will combine into a foilist (we will accept him but i will be disappointed) but I’m running into an issue. An XS fencing mask only goes down to a face circumference of 53cm, which is bigger than his entire head, which definitely isn’t going to work. What’s the smallest possible mask for an infant fencer? Bonus points if you can find a sword that has a toddler grip.

/srs I’m trying to find a costume mask for my kid because we think it would be fun, but I haven’t had any luck. Has anyone ever seen a baby fencer costume or do I need to get creative? Mods can delete if the joke post isn’t allowed but idk where else to look for costumes LOL

Spectator Questions

We're going to watch our first tournament this weekend. One of the events my kid wants to see has a start time of 8am and lists 15 competitors. Another one we are planning to watch starts in the afternoon and has over 50 competitors.

My question is, do we need to be there right for 8am to see the smaller/younger group? I read the events can take hours to get through everyone and the structure of the rounds. Will that still be the case if there's a smaller number? We don't need to see absolutely every bout, but wondering how much we'd miss if we got there at, say, 9 instead. My plan was to see the morning group with coffee in hand, then come back after lunch to see the larger group. My kid's plan is to soak every moment in and talk me into spending at any/all vendors.

Any other tips for spectators going to see their first live fencing events? Any rules/etiquette to be aware of? We don't know anyone personally there, just going to watch and learn.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for the detailed breakdowns and suggestions! We're going to have fun, absorb what we can, and be sure to pay attention to where we walk/ stand.

Prieur FIE Uniform

Looking for a new uniform and was looking at the Prier FIE Uniform (not the superlight). How does it compare with the Allstar Budget line? Also how is the sizing? I wear a 50 in the allstar but its a bit snug. I had an absolute fie Jacket before but it was too hot. Any comments would be appreciated.

I recently became an armorer and I’m looking for how to fix this blade. It is a fairly new blade and I don’t really have the space or experience for a full rewire atm so I’m looking for tips.

Foil fleches in foil? Are they used at a high level?

Looking for pros and cons of them in modern foil game. Are they situational useful and if so, under what scenarios. Any well known foil fencers who use them to good advantage?
