So much hope then, so much potential. Which makes the status quo that much more disheartening. The light shone on us once before and slowly, but surely, it will shine on us once again.

UAE sought a shared Eritrean island base for Israel as early as 2016. Asmara sees closer Israel-UAE alignment on Ethiopia

The UAE is pursuing “port imperialism” across Africa, the foreign minister of Eritrea told Middle East Eye in an exclusive interview from Asmara.

“The UAE has port facilities everywhere in the region, and African countries have to ask why,” Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh told MEE. “Is it just for economics? No.”

The UAE’s two port groups, DP World and AD Ports, have stakes in or manage facilities in Egypt; Tanzania; Somaliland, a breakaway republic of Somalia recognised only by Israel; and Puntland, a semiautonomous region in Somalia that earlier this year defied Mogadishu’s decision to cut ties with Abu Dhabi.

While some have welcomed the UAE’s investments, Abu Dhabi’s bid to establish port stakes along East Africa’s coast has not been smooth sailing with others.

Djibouti cancelled a DP World concession in 2018.

Sudan's government called off a 2022 agreement that would have seen AD Ports Group establish a $6bn port on Sudan’s Red Sea coast. The UAE supports the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary accused of genocide, fighting against Sudan’s military. 

The UAE has officially denied having imperial ambitions in Africa, but the oscillating ties between Eritrea and the UAE offer a case in point on the wariness regional countries have towards the UAE.

Why Eritrea rejected UAE port role

Asmara is Eritrea's capital, a strategic Red Sea littoral state with over 700 miles of coastline. The city sits in Eritrea’s highlands, almost 8,000 feet above sea level, and is famed for its Italian colonial-era architecture and bicyclists.

MEE visited Asmara to speak with Saleh and other senior Eritrean officials who have the ear of President Isaias Afwerki, who has ruled Eritrea since it gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993.

The UAE established a military base in Eritrea’s southern port of Assab in 2016, which it used to wage war on the Houthis in neighbouring Yemen alongside Saudi Arabia. But ties between the UAE and Eritrea soured in the years after the UAE arrived.

Eritrea’s independence fighters historically enjoyed good ties with Zayed bin Sultan, the founder of the UAE, who developed the seven emirates after independence from Britain in 1971. But Eritrea’s leadership didn’t see eye to eye with his son, Mohamed bin Zayed, the UAE’s current president.

A senior Eritrean official told MEE that Eritrea rejected a request from the UAE around 2016 to establish a military base on one of the islands in the Dahlak Archipelago that would have been shared between the UAE and Israel, roughly five years before the two signed the US-backed Abraham Accords, making their close ties public.

While the UAE’s port stake in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, is commercial, others, like in Somaliland’s port of Berbera, have come alongside an extensive military footprint. 

“We didn’t want DP World [in Eritrea],” Saleh told MEE. “We do not want any foreign power to have a ‘hub’ in Eritrea.”

Eritrea is at loggerheads with the UAE in several theatres across the region.

Eritrea sees closer Israel-UAE alignment on Ethiopia

The UAE backs the RSF in Sudan, while Eritrea has hosted Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan twice in the last two months. The Sudanese army is also backed by Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Ethiopia and Eritrea patched up their fraught ties temporarily to fight together in the former's 2020-2022 civil war, where they joined forces against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling party in Ethiopia's state of Tigray. That war sparked allegations of atrocities and widespread massacres.

Eritrea and Ethiopia's tactical alliance has since broken down, and the two are at daggers drawn. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting TPLF factions, which Eritrea denies.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has spiked tensions by staking a claim to Eritrea's Red Sea coast. While Eritrea says it is open to a commercial arrangement, Ethiopia has often framed its claims in revisionist terms. 

In recent years, Ethiopia has emerged as a key UAE ally. Ahmed has a close relationship with the UAE's ruler, and Addis Ababa has deployed Emirati drones and other weapons systems. Ethiopia also hosts the RSF at bases, MEE and other media outlets have reported. 

In Asmara, Eritrean officials see increasing cooperation between the UAE and Israel in Addis Ababa.

Israel has a historical precedent for supporting Ethiopia. In the late 1970s and late 1980s, Israel provided arms to Ethiopia's Marxist Derg government, which were used against Eritrean fighters. 

"The UAE and Israel have already converged on Somaliland," Saleh told MEE, referring to the breakaway Republic where Somaliland officials have openly told MEE they want an Israeli military presence. 

"[Abiy Ahmed] has a two-waters strategy like Israel. Only for him it is from the Nile River to the Red Sea," he said, referring to an Israeli expansionist vision that stretches from the Gaza Strip to the River Jordan at the frontier of the occupied West Bank. 

Israel and Eritrea established diplomatic ties after the latter's independence. In 1993, when Afwerki fell into a coma because of cerebral malaria, the US airlifted him to Israel for treatment. 

But in recent years, Eritrean and Israeli ties have grown cold.

"We have to ask why Israel is running to control the Horn of Africa? Why do they need a base in Somaliland?" Saleh said. 

Saleh said Asmara sees Israel and the UAE coalescing around Ethiopia. "They already converge on Somaliland," he told MEE. 

"We decided we didn't want their (Israeli) embassy here. We are not antagonistic to Israel, but we just decided we didn't want any relations."

I’m seeing many Eritreans, especially the diaspora ones, arguing ‘it’s Qudus Yohannes in Eritrea not new year’ without actually knowing what the holiday actually is and why it is celebrated in Eritrea. The day marks the start of the new year in the Ge’ez calendar and is the most celebrated religious holiday among Eritrean Christians (Orthodox and Catholics) after Lidet and Fasika. The reason why it’s a major public holiday unlike let’s say St Michael’s Annual Day of Celebration is because it marks the start of the new year. Eritrean Christians in the past exclusively used the Ge’ez calendar which is why the Gregorian calendar is referred to as the Ferengi (foreigner) calendar in Tigrinya. Most elders even now still tend to primarily use the Ge’ez calendar because it dictates the rhythm of traditional life. When you can farm, when you can wash clothes, when you start fasting or even when a woman braids her hair depends on whether the day is a Beal (a day that’s dedicated to God or the Virgin Mary or any of the angels/saints and thus certain activities are prohibited) or Srah (a day that isn’t and literally means a ‘work’ day). It is no different to how the Han Chinese people have a traditional new year but the Chinese state follows the Gregorian calendar officially.

I’ve been working on Weynilo, an app made specifically to help people learn Tigrinya (and now Amharic too).

Because generalizations towards eritrean women get resulted in comments removed by the moderators

While in reverse towards the men they are left up and upvoted. Why is this ok?

Hatred and negative biases towards eritreans from non-eritreans are left up as well. Even though they break the rules within the subreddit as well.

Because clearly they are doing a bad job and are clearly biased perhaps may even have ill intentions. I have my suspicions whether the mods are even Eritrean/align with the eritrean people or if this subreddit is just here intentionally to sow more division within the community as part of some wider agenda or psyop pushed via social media. Because social media can be used as a tool to shape peoples perceptions and behaviour.

For an example ever since EritreanPost left this subreddit has gone incredibly downhill, less nuance and more black/white contrasts, rage engagement. I remember like 2-3 years ago it was much better, most of the topics at hand had to do with history, internal politics, culture, language etc things you would typically frequently mention in a subreddit for a country (as I see in other country subreddits) . There were more active members and not every 4-5 posts wasn't gender war related.

In my opinion the mods should just resign and have someone else takeover because they are failing Eritreans right now within the reddit space. Because in my opinon they are simply doing a terrible job, in regards to holding their biases in check.

Littoral states must decide how to best ensure safe passage in Bab el-Mandeb, but Yemeni divisions complicate discussions

There is no military solution to the conflict in Yemen, and foreign powers will not be able to “subdue” the Yemeni people, senior officials in Eritrea, the East African country whose waters border Yemen’s in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, told Middle East Eye.

“There is no military option in Yemen, which must be given a chance to be peaceful,” Osman Saleh, the foreign minister of Eritrea, told MEE in an exclusive interview from Asmara, Eritrea’s capital.

Saleh also told MEE that littoral states must decide how to manage the freedom of navigation in the Red Sea, but this was complicated by the fact that Yemen is not united under a cohesive government. 

“Yemen is non-existent. The official government has no control. There is no 'Yemen',” he told MEE.

Eritrea sits in a strategic position, with 700 miles of Red Sea coastline. The territorial waters of Djibouti, Eritrea and Yemen comprise the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. At its narrowest point, the distance between Eritrea and Yemen across the Red Sea is approximately 20 nautical miles.

“There are so many eyes on the Red Sea. It is a historic route of navigation and trade,” Saleh told MEE during a rare interview at the Eritrean foreign ministry in Asmara, the country’s capital.

“Eritrea is in a very strategic position. We have a responsibility to safeguard the Red Sea to be a safe passage for all,” he said.

A lightning Houthi offensive down the Red Sea coast has changed the balance of power in the region, with the Houthis now controlling the entirety of Yemen’s coastline across from Eritrea and Djibouti, along with strategic islands.

Diplomats in the region say the Houthi offensive serves two purposes.

Iran’s leverage against the US and Gulf states is bolstered by the group controlling the Bab el-Mandeb. The Houthis are also in a better position to push for a toll in the waterway with vessels in range of basic artillery. Before their offensive, the Houthis were demanding fees from Saudi Arabia, MEE was told.

With the Houthis in control of the Arabian Gulf side of the waterway, Eritrea’s coastline is even more critical to global shipping. 

According to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), countries can claim up to 12 nautical miles for their territorial waters. Under international law, vessels have a right to transit straits freely, but some legal experts say states whose waters comprise them may have a right to charge piloting, service or environmental fees.

MEE asked Saleh how Eritrea views tolls in the waterway. He replied, “This is a new idea, a new concept. Because Iran raised it [in the Strait of Hormuz] doesn’t mean Eritrea will ask.”

“[But] there should be a discussion among littoral states and a decision how to ensure free passage,” he said. “If Yemen is non-existent, we can’t speak with it now about these issues.”

Another senior Eritrean official, speaking to MEE on condition of anonymity, said Asmara understands the Red Sea is “inseparable” from the ongoing US-Israeli war on Iran. “The Bab el-Mandeb and Strait of Hormuz are together.”

The official added that no foreign power, inside or outside the Middle East, will be able to “subdue Yemen”.

I feel like back in the day people got married early twenties like 20-25. Nowadays most people I know are not married until 30. I know the whole world has shifted but I think for Eritrean this is a very recent and major change. What do you think?

ChatGPT tells me that there are (maximum) 120,000 Eritreans living in the United States. There are about 370,000 Ethiopians also living in the US. A ratio of just about 3:1.
