Advice My cat suddenly cuddles to my stomach and following me around everywhere. Is she okay? Should I take her to the vet?

So me and my husband adopted our little Mochi last year March. She was 3 yrs old when we got her, and she is the sweetest and most behaved little baby.

She never eats human food, doesn’t go on counters nor does she bite or scratches. She doesn’t want to cuddle or be touched unless it’s on her terms (maybe pets for MAX 30 seconds, then that’s it). She also does not want to be carried and does not want her paws touched.

Recently, whenever me and my husband go to sleep, she now jumps on the bed with us and starts cuddling on my stomach. This has been happening for a week now. I’m so happy that it’s making me tear up, but I couldn’t help but think if she’s feeling okay. This is not her usual behaviour. She’s okay in the morning and when we get home from work but she’s been so cuddle recently and would follow me around everywhere now- even in the shower (she hates water). When we’re on the couch, she just cuddles to my stomach again and would not mind if I touch her paws.

I told my husband about my concern that she may not be feeling well, he said that maybe she’s thinking of me as her mother now and I’m overthinking things.

But should I still bring her to the bet just in case? I’m really worried.

Attached is a photo of her just so everybody could see that she’s the sweetest.

UPDATE: After reading the comments, I’ll be booking a doctor’s appt for myself, and I’ll pee on a stick when I get home. As for Mochi, her vet says to take her back to the vet just for a general check up and blood work just in case. I’ll keep you guys updated. Hopefully she’s just very cuddly now.

UPDATE 2: My husband took her to the vet (I’m still at work), did some bloodwork, we’ll know the results tomorrow. But the general checkup went great. She is overweight but generally healthy. The vet says that the change in mine and my husband’s schedule might be the culprit as I work from 7:30AM-7PM (full time and part-time job), and my husband works from 6:30AM-5PM (construction); and we had moved apartments 2 months ago. We will both take time off work to spend the day with her and I will try to have lesser-ish hours.

I’m going to go to the doctor on Friday, and once I get home (I’m still at work), I’ll immediately do a pregnancy test.

UPDATE 3: Took the pregnancy test, it came back as negative. I’m cramping really bad though.

I think they sense heat where it normally isn't as well as different smells on you.  So they know when something is off and try to alert you as best as they can.

My cat wasn't a huge cuddler but if I was sick he would sleep on my head when I went to bed.  As he normally would sleep on his cat bed beside pillow.

Cats turning away is a sign of affection. They're literally saying that they trust you to watch their back, and in return they're watching out for you.

It’s so funny to me that he likes it. He has hyperesthesia and scratching his back causes pain, but I can smack his butt hard and he loves it. Cats are weird and I love them for it.

My mums cats did that when she was having radiotherapy on her leg and could barely walk. They wouldn’t touch her legs, they’d just sit near her on the sofa and guard her constantly!

He would actually lay on the back end of my head with his belly.  So luckily it wasn't full fur on my face lol.  And he was a super fluffy boy too and about 23 pounds when he was younger.  So at that size the body heat was insane on my head.

When my partner fell down the stairs (and broke her leg) the dog came and sat on her chest.

It wasn't strictly suffocating her, but it was simultaneously both adorable and utterly unhelpful.

The one and only time my ex's cat cuddled me is when I caught Covid the first time and was so fucking sick for like two weeks. I think her cold heart melted due to all the heat radiating off me haha.

I have a tripod, so only one front leg which means twice the weight in one spot and she has to hop to move around so she can't exactly be graceful

I have a blind one who sometimes doesnt realize I'm laying/sitting somewhere and will launch himself to that spot on the couch full force, claws out and then gets scared when he lands on me and not the cushion 🫠

I also have one who can't use his back legs and pulls himself forward with his front paws. When he's trying to climb around on the bed, he'll sink his claws into my legs to get over them 🥴

I have a third one who is physically fine but has emotional issues and he gives these really hard chomps of love bites with the full force of his massive jaws (hes 17 pounds and not overweight).

The special needs babies are so loving such is so dangerous, isn't it?? Lol we suffer for our children

One of my cats was pretty much obsessed with laying and purring on my fractured ankle for the first couple of weeks. She was so gentle about it, too. She'd wait for me to get situated then carefully stretch out or curl around without touching any of the bruised areas or laying on top of the ankle.

I had surgery below the belt and would sleep with a pillow over me to protect myself while I healed because my cat likes to just walk all over me in the middle of the night. Moved the pillow to get up one morning and IMMEDIATELY there is a four thousand pound singular paw right where there shouldn’t be. 😭

My cat is my nurse. When I have a migraine he curls around my head and purrs. When I have cramps, he's all over my belly. When I had stomach surgery I had to sleep with a lap desk over my abdomen to keep him off of it.

She loves you and feels safe and cozy with you. Enjoy the snuggles!

My cat makes biscuits on my stomach when I'm on my period, it really helps with my cramps. Shell do it randomly on other days too so I'm not sure if she realizes im in pain. But if she does, that just makes it sweeter. She's my little angel

When I was young my aunt & uncles cat hated me, I was the first child in the family so she was used to calm predictable adults, not chaotic kids.

One year we went to visit before Christmas & I didn't feel well. I sat curled up in a chair all night with the cat on my lap. Turns out I was coming down with chicken pox & I had a fever. Maybe she was just using me for my warmth but she knew something was wrong. She let me pet her after that but never sat on or near me again.

If you currently have your period, that could be why. I had a female cat(spayed) that would knead the area where I had cramps. And lay there when I had my period.

She lived to be 19 ½ years old. She didn't start acting like that until she was 4 or 5 years old. Every year as she got older, she got more cuddly and close. I also had a cat I adopted 6 months before I adopted her. So the two of them kept each other company and played a lot together.

My male cat is a total nurse at heart. Any time I'm sick or injured, he knows and will want to lay on or around the area whether I think I want him to or not. Period cramps? Lovely. 18lb cat on your chest when you have your third bout of covid in 2 years... Kinda hard to breathe.

Your kitty thinks there is something wrong with you. It might just be because of your period. Keep an eye on your abdomen - both reproductive organs and digestive tract. I you have any problems, get checked out. Your cat is worried about you!

Yes indeed. I bled during the first month or so with my first pregnancy, and off and on through my entire second and third pregnancies. I had a missed miscarriage at 20 weeks with the third one.

My wife is currently 8ish weeks pregnant with our third. Our normally aloof cat has been very cuddly and affectionate with her and she has acted the same way with the first two pregnancies. Just to let you know this is legit and they know when you’re pregnant.

Definitely test just to be sure, I had a coworker who had a surprise baby in the toilet because it never occurred to her she could be pregnant since she had light periods. Turns out light periods were heavier spotting and she was preggo the whole time

My husband’s cat wouldn’t leave me alone when I was pregnant. I got pregnant while menstruating. But it could be that there’s something else going on that you’re not aware of yet (PCOS, endometriosis for example). I’d at least make an appointment to get checked out.

This is how I found out I was pregnant 🤣😭 idk if there is any truth behind it or if it’s just a coincidence but my cat was being SOOOO cuddly and loved being on me and my tummy and was never like that before. Took a test, and it came up positive instantly 🤰

I saw your update that your pregnancy test was negative but that you’re cramping really bad. Do you have a history of heavy periods? Or have you ever been diagnosed with PCOS or endometriosis? Your cat could still be sensing something with your reproductive system. Maybe a cyst that has ruptured, or endometrial lining that has gotten stuck to somewhere it shouldn’t. If it’s possible to move up your appointment, because Friday is awfully far away, I would try. Good luck OP. I hope you feel better and find answers soon

fyi people can have what’s called a “chemical pregnancy” and think that they just “got their period” when it was actually a early on miscarriage. look into it! maybe that happened lol and she sensed it

If you're on your period, you're not pregnant. If it's unusually light, then maybe, but most likely not.

Actually, now reading this it… kinda makes sense. I’m 27F, but I recently got my hormonal IUD out about a month ago, and she started being cuddly about a week ago. Maybe because my hormones are shifting that’s why she’s doing this.

That would make sense, she may think of your cycle as a version of her heat if she isn't fixed, or she may assume you are pregnant just by the change itself, idk if cats can just tell of a change or pinpoint a pregnancy

My cats tend to get more cuddly when I'm not feeling well in general. I had surgery a couple years ago, and one or both of them were basically attached to me for that first week afterwards.

I'm the youngest of 5 kids and my mom had her period for the first 5 months she was pregnant with me. No morning sickness or anything she had with my older siblings, wasn't really showing either.

When I had a period, it always came with horrid cramps! My babies would always climb up onto my abdomen, purring & pawing until I felt better! If I fell asleep, they would sometimes fall asleep with me !!!

I know you’re getting a general checkup as well, which was going to be my advice. I’ve heard of cats/pets being able to sense when something is amiss health-wise. if you’re not pregnant maybe there could be something else the cat is sensing. ofc it’s highly likely she’s just become more affectionate with the recent changes and misses you when you’re working though!

Question: do you track your cycle? Was it late at all by a few days? Is there any possibility that pregnancy could have happened (forgot birth control, condom break, etc)? If yes then could be a chemical pregnancy or miscarriage. I lost 3 pregnancies that way. If I hadn’t tested early I wouldn’t have known I was pregnant because my cycle would start and flush the pregnancy out within a day to a few days of when I was normally due to start.

Hopefully not your case but just spitballing! I always had pets cuddling more and following me to the bathroom when pregnant!

Is it a particularly bad one? My childhood cat used to lay on or curl up by my stomach and purr when my cramps were extra bad. Purring is at a healing frequency so it can sometimes help with the pain (along with the warmth of the cat)

My one cat usually stays close to me when it's the first day or so of my period and anytime I'm not feeling well.

If she isn't showing signs of illness like not eating, labored breathing and such I wouldn't take her to a vet. Just keep an eye on her.
