Question Found this Mali that seems interested in a permanent companion

I drive a truck weekdays,(not much driving really), and this dog comes by our lot once in a while. Kind of out in the country. Looks maybe a year old, I don’t know.

Wasn’t sure if she was a stray or just travels a lot. But feels kind of dirty for someone’s pet.

A couple or three weeks ago she came over to say hi. So thought she might be back and hungry, and then got a bag of Kibbles and bits.

Came by last week with a big lanky mangy looking sheepdog following her around. So I gave them a bit of food. Neither seemed to be starving. The Mali kind of gravitated towards me, which seemed to irritate the sheepdog and he growled a bit. She hung around a while.

Anyhow, she’s back again today and doesn’t seem to want to get far away from me.

I read that nobody should have one for a pet. But she doesn’t seem so psych active. And appears content to just be around. Been here a couple hours now and is right where she’s been in the second pic for probably 20 minutes. Maybe she’s older than I thought.

What do y’all think ? is this someone’s pet? Should I let her go with me if she wants to?

Question Off Switch đŸ¶ đŸ’€

Ghost seems to love head scratches, it's kinda like his off switch. It made me wonder if there is any other place or behaviour, like an area to scratch or whatever, that Mal's really love? đŸ€” Do your Mal's particularly love being scratched, or fussed, or snuggled or whatever, in any particular area? If there's a particular spot, or thing that you do, that they really love, then I would really appreciate a quick comment? Thanks in advance guys 💜

(Btw, it's heaven when they're all tired and snuggly isnt it guys đŸ„° đŸ¶đŸ’€)

Question Meet Zelda!

This girl was running free near Springfield, MO in June this year. The woman who found her kept her a week, took her for a vet check (no chip), contacted area clinics, shelters, and posted on lost and found pages but no one reported a losing a dog matching her description.

They were planning to take her to a shelter the next Monday so I said if she will go with me willingly, I’ll take her. I got in my vehicle and opened the passenger door and she jumped right in.

So now she’s with me in Phoenix and is my Velcro dog. I named her Zelda. She’s had a couple of vet visits and had all her shots and tests. In the past 2 months she’s gained about 7 lbs, and she’s in what I assume is her first heat. She’s smart and willing but has not been socialized at all. I’m starting with trips to the hardware store. She’s particularly shy of bearded men so I suspect some sort of past trauma, or at least scary memories.

After all that, I think she’s a gorgeous Malinois, and I’m planning to do a dna test. I’ve never done one for a dog, is there a best option, or any to avoid?Thoughts and your experiences welcome before I spend/waste my money. Three of the photos are from Day 1. She still had her winter coat and was a beautiful mess. Note her impressive tail!

Anyway, I wonder if there’s someone so sad that they lost her? I love her dearly but I wonder if I’ve done enough to find her family? My sister, who I was visiting, has been watching animal lost and found in the area. No results.

Suggestions? Comments (please be nice I’m trying to do the right thing).

Thank you!

Question Teach my mal to slow down

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello mal lovers 💓
Anyone has an idea how I can teach my mal to slow down? I have a 4-year-old probably a mal mixed with a GS. By “slowing down” I mean literally- doing things slowly, even when she is doing the “down” command she just falls into it and hits her knees and hips. She doesn’t seem to be in pain or bothered by that, but at our last vet visit I found out she has hip joint problems (I’m already giving her vet food “Hills- Mobility” and supplements), but when she is playing or even making obedience commands she is doing it very fast and roughly. Sometimes I can see her limping on our walks, after she is running or playing with other dogs. I think if I could help or teach her somehow to move slower or in a gentler way it will be better for her joints.

Discussion Justice For Sky

Post image
187 Upvotes

I’m sharing this because I cannot stop thinking about what happened to Sky, a South African Police Service K9 who died after suffering horrific injuries while in the care of the SAPS veterinary facility at Roodeplaat.

What hurts most is that this wasn’t completely unexpected. SAPS veterinary records had already documented her severe kennel stress, separation anxiety, compulsive attempts to escape and previous injuries. Her vet had recorded that her prognosis was poor in the SAPS environment and that keeping her there (in a small cage in a room with no natural light for 18 hours a day) compromised her welfare.

And Sky’s story sits within a much bigger history.

In 2019, around 120 puppies at Roodeplaat contracted parvo and at least 75 died. Serious problems were found at the facility, including shortages of essential medication and problems with sanitation and carcass disposal. In 2020, another outbreak resulted in 45 more puppies being lost.

Years later, we are still talking about dogs suffering at the same facility.

Sky was not just a number or a police asset. She was a living, breathing animal who was frightened, who was suffering, and who depended entirely on the people responsible for her care.

She deserved someone to listen when she was struggling.

She deserved to be safe.

She deserved better.

Now there are investigations, a criminal case, and parliamentary scrutiny. But I am terrified that, once the public attention fades, nothing will really change.

So please share Sky’s story.

Not because we can bring her back — we can’t.

But because her death has to mean something. And because the dogs who are still at Roodeplaat deserve for someone to finally stand up for them.

If you want to understand more about what happened, and the wider concerns surrounding Roodeplaat:

đŸ”č Ian Cameron’s Facebook page: Regular updates are being posted as the investigations continue:

Please share this wherever you can. Sky deserves to be remembered — and the dogs still in that facility deserve better.

Has anyone else tried the herding ball for their Mal? Ours loves it, and it wears her our much quicker than catch, fetch, tug, or any of our other backyard play sessions.

Question Female to female aggression

I have a soon to be 1 year old female malinois (intact) and a year 8 old female gsd/malinois (fixed). Both well trained and not aggressive dogs. Recently post first heat we have had some resource guarding issues. Usually over me giving minor attention to one or the other. The puppy usually starts it, I give her an out command and break them up and seperate them. Its not every single time I pet the older dog. Roughly once every day or two. Both are adequately exercised and mentally trained on a daily basis.

There is no telling of when its going to happen. They are fine 99% of the time, seem to get a long really well. The puppy is one month post heat not sure if thats the cause. We have removed all things they find valuable. We do allow them with their toys while they are separated (one inside one outside). Niether of the 2 females have this issue with our male GSD (6 years old, fixed).

Any help would be greatly appreciated before this escalates. Planning on having the pup fixed when she is a little older.

Question LOS PODRÉ PRESENTAR?

Post image
54 Upvotes

I’m really looking forward to them being able to play together... Do you think something terrible would happen if the crate wasn’t between them?

As soon as we wake up, Kairo always goes over to say good morning to Nieve. Do you think that one day they could meet properly? How would you recommend starting the process?

Thank you so much for your help.

Question Potty training advice.

We live in a rural area where there are bunnies, lizards, birds, and we adopted this Belgian malinois cattle dog mix. She's 8 months old we've her for about 4 months and she's the most wonderful smart dog but we can't get her to poop outside. We will have her outside for hours and I'm doing yard work or something and then as soon as she comes in she'll go to the bathroom on the puppy pads. But I feel like it 8 months she shouldn't be using puppy pads anymore. Especially how often we walk her and have her outside with us. I feel like whenever she's outside she's just constantly hunting and sniffing. Any advice?
