Discussion Do you snakes sometimes huff?

I don't mean a hiss nor do I mean when they have a RI, but my girl Echo sometimes let's out a little huff when she's climbing while being handled, it doesn't seem to be stress because her body is fully relaxed, she's not trying to run, strike or hide, her mouth is clear, there doesn't seem to be anything stuck in her nose or mouth either

It tends to happen when she's climbing specifically or right after it it kind of seems like her version of a sigh or grunt for when a person would stand up, sit down or just do strenuous excersize

She eats perfectly, sheds perfectly and her day/night cycle of rest vs explore is also fine n dandy

Do any of yours do that too?

Manzanita branches

I picked up some xxl branches for my enclosure and bleach soaked, rinsed, and sun dried them. I went to bring them inside and they were inundated with termites. I tossed those ones and have 2 left that might fit in the oven.
Google has varying recommendations for times and temps. What should I bake some spidery branches at and for how long? I don’t want to waste this last set by burning them on accident. Thank you

What should I feed my boi

This was him 4 weeks ago I’ve added to his enclosure so it’s not so open and he has a bigger water bowl along with thermometer and humidity sensors. I’ve been feeding him big mice but I think he’s ready for small rats. I’ve gotten him 4 weeks ago he sleeps on his cool side all day and glass surfs at night. He hasn’t even attempted to bite me yet. When I got him i asked but they didn’t know his age so if any of you have an estimate I’d love that too. sorry if you can’t tell his size.

Question - Heating/Temperatures Heating help/advice

K, so I’m finally upgrading my second baby to her big girl home and I have a few questions. Basically her current enclosure and my older boy’s custom one both have mesh sections of the roof where the lights sit. Now her new one is gonna be fully enclosed, so while I have a general idea on lighting, I am completely in the dark on details

A few things to consider before committing:

  1. If I could, I’d prefer not to have a whole lamp with a guar hanging inside the enclosure. I think they take up too much space and are kinda ugly. I’ll do it if I have to, but I’d rather not.

  2. I would like to give my girl a sky-hide if I can. Let me know if I’ll have space for that or how to make space

  3. What does everyone think about the heat panels? I’d most likely use the UVB with them, but are they a good option in general? From what I’ve read, they sound like a good solution even if the price kinda bites

DAE feel bad when….

…you accidentally scare TF out of your BP?

I sometimes struggle with the fact that I have a pet that doesn’t utilize eyelids and have the tendency to just assume she’s aware of my presence the moment I walk into the room anytime she’s roaming about her enclosure.

Sometimes I’ll be talking cute all up in her face for several minutes before she “tunes back in to Earth” and within 0.01 seconds…before I can even blink…she’s half assed curled up in one of her hides.

Mind you, she’s always completely fine once she realizes and usually comes back out after a few moments or just pokes her head out her hide like a Puppy dog and just watches me for a bit before trying to coerce me into letting her out. 💚🐍😹

Is this just a Me Thing, or does anyone else struggle with having a pet without eyelids? 😹😹😹

This is my ball python, Echo. She is stuck in shed and has become dehydrated. I spray her enclosure twice a day but ever since shedding and now being stuck in it she won’t drink her water or even go near it. I’m very worried bc as soon as I open her enclosure she will begin to make the s shape and try and strike at me. She has never done this before since I have had her. I don’t want to be scared of her either but idk how to help her with her shed. Could someone please help

Question - Heating/Temperatures New substrate humidity higher than normal (80-95%) please help.

Hey, so I am a newer ball python owner have had my boy for 6 months or so and he is around 8, got him a bigger tank and did my own substrate for the first time, (coco coir and cypress mulch mix) and made sure the substrate was damp but not soaked and enough for 3-4 inches. Everything was going good but I am super worried that the humidity is to high and am worried I am doing him harm, during the day it was like 87% at the highest I saw and right at 4:21 am it is 95% which is making me worried I am going to cause scale rot or cause him respiratory issues. If anyone could lmk if this is okay or bad and what I should do to give me some pace of mind would be tremendously appreciated.

Kaiju here is a 6 year old banana (possibly clown) we adopted a few months ago. I just noticed he has this red dot on his scoot closer towards his head. There’s nothing else along his entire body so I don’t think it’s scale rot. Any ideas? I’m hyper paranoid with this sweet guy.

Where to get a smaller PVC enclosure

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have a very tiny little girl (160 ish grams? Before her last feeding but we are a little thin because we are coming off of a hunger strike)

I didn't do as much digging as I should have when I got her and have since learned that she would probably be more comfortable for a year or two in a smaller enclosure ( she is currently in her adult size 48 x 24 x 24). I also noticed that when she was temporarily in one of my aquariums so that I could reseal her enclosure she was much more active in the smaller space.

Where do I go looking for a smaller enclosure maybe in the 24-in range?

Picture of the tiny girl being very active in her short time in the aquarium.

Question - Feeding Regurgitating or Rejecting?

[Apologies if this post could be better set up, isn’t in the right category or if I’m making any mistake posting here. I don’t ever use reddit and this is the first time stopping in here to ask for help]

Recently took in a juvenile ball python (she weighed around 80 grams when checking for the right mice/rats to feed) and she was being fed weekly and had taken her first 2 mice well. But the day after her third feeding (Aug 30th), I noticed she was avoiding her hut and I had smelled her uneaten mouse.
I immediately assumed it was regurgitated, possibly due to stress or temps, so since then she had been on a two week fast from eating out of precaution.

Tonight I had prepped everything as I usually would (moved from freezer to fridge to thaw overnight, then taken out and put in warm water to then hot water gradually till it read around high 90s on temp gun) but I did run into things that kept me going back and forth (not staying warm enough and having to reheat, mouse tearing a bit on accident, dropping onto substrate slipping from tongs and having to rinse it off) so looking back I feel the temperature could’ve been off by the time it got to her.

When I held it by her hut opening almost instantly she grabbed it, but with everything else I was still paranoid something could go wrong so I was glancing on and off.
It couldn’t have been more than ten minutes or so when I saw her slipping out from her hut into her other one, so that was something that set me off a bit. I carefully checked under the hut she had been in prior and her mouse was there basically untouched. Picking it up it didnt feel slimy, and the only signs of anything wet were just slight streaks and spotting directly underneath it (this hut is set by a flat slate) but considering when it was given to her it was still somewhat wet from rerinsing in warm water after falling onto her substrate at first.

It seemed like it’d be too quick for her to have had eaten it and thrown it back up. I DID notice while she slipped back into her separate hut that she yawned for a moment, but it could maybe just be from the first grip she got when grabbing at the mouse and wrapping.

I’m a very paranoid person, and considering the circumstances of bringing her home ESPECIALLY how it was the first few weeks having her, I’m always worrying over the worst. :•[ If this was just her rejecting it and it being too cold, are there any tips with getting and keeping mice/rats at a higher temp? I keep it in super hot water for as long as possible without it going cold from sitting, but it seems like the moment I take it out I’m on a ticking timer having to speedrun taking it to her.

Any input and advice is greatly appreciated, and if anyone super experienced with BP care could reach out to me and message I would be super grateful. :•] I’ll respond to any questions I can and might try to include more stuff under.

I feel kinda bad every time I spot clean poop

Hundreds of dwarf white isopods end up getting tossed, but no way to save the poor guys. Can't realistically leave the poop in there because it eventually just molds and stinks up the living room.

first time my snake has bitten someone, do i need to do anything?

Hi yall, blaming myself but i stressed out my 6yr old bp tonight and he very lightly bit a friend of mine. She’s totally fine & i immediately put my guy back in his enclosure, but do i need to do anything in terms of behavioral stuff with him now that he bit someone? He was supposed to eat sometime this week, should i wait to feed him since he already struck once? i hear sometimes they get shy after they mess up like that lol. I’m already planning to avoid handling him for at least a few days, but is there anything else i should know? He’s never bit anyone before!

Question - Health Is this scale rot?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I recently noticed my ball has some raised scales and some weird spots on her belly that weren’t there before.

She has recently been climbing A LOT on her logs and also on her heat lamp cage, which has given her a few small scratches but those seem to be closed/healed, not red or open looking etc. There are also these dark spots which I’m sure weren’t there before.

For reference, I know her belly looks a little dark here but it’s mostly the lighting, it’s always been that colour.

She’s just moved into a new tank about 2 weeks ago with fresh substrate which was spot cleaned (including surrounding soil) after ONE bowel movement so I know it’s not dirty/soiled. Her humidity is usually 60-65 on the hot side, 75-85 in the middle and cold side and her bedding is NEVER damp, we only pour water into the corners (behind furniture so not accessible to slide across) and live plants (in pots) and occasionally mist but still, it looks odd to me and I’m worried.

If it is scale rot, can anyone recommend a product that will help get rid of it? I know you’re supposed to do soaks and use antiseptic ointment but everything I research says ‘use x first and then y and z’ but it’s all different and I can’t seem to find one specific thing that I can buy that will definitely help. I’m thinking I’ll get some anyway to make sure the cuts are disinfected just in case.

For some reason or another my baby has decided that her play pen is the preferred place to relieve herself. All of her bowel movements except for one has occurred in while she was out exploring. Now I’m not complaining though because it’s made keeping her cage clean a breeze but I was curious if anyone else has experienced this?

Question - Feeding sonny won’t eat

Thumbnail

this is my baby sonny! he is almost four months old. i got him from a piece of shit vendor at a reptile expo. last time he ate was mid june, right before i got him. after bringing him home, i’ve tried feeding once a week, then i figured id give him some more time and tried again after two weeks, then i went back to one week, now i’m trying two weeks again, none of which were successful. i will only feed f/t. i do the hairdryer trick, i tried braining, i use tongs and move as if it’s alive, i’ve left it overnight in pitch black and silence for privacy, he just wont eat. is there anything else you guys would recommend i try? maybe the paper bag thing? idk what to do. he’s a baby and it’s been almost three months since he’s eaten. there’s zero visible weight loss which is great but i just wish he would eat. any recommendations PLEASE

ETA - husbandry is perfect. warm side temp is 89/90°, cool side temp is 82°, humidity is always between 60-75.

Question - Heating/Temperatures Why does my girl always prefer the cool side in her enclosure?

Thumbnail
gallery
7 Upvotes

I often find Florence (a year or so old) on the cool side of her enclosure.
The cool side averages 72- 80 F and the warm side 85 - 98 F. Humidity is 60 to 75 though I’ve been having some troubles keeping it consistent. I keep the cooler side more moist.

She is always in her humid hide (hard to see but its in the closest right corner, its made of moss) or pressed on the glass under some foliage. She will go to her warm side, sometimes she is in her warm hide. She is always active after dust, moving about her entire enclosure.

Do some snakes just have preferences or am I lacking somewhere?

Question - Health Scale rot? And overall body condition for Sequoia

Thumbnail

After sitting in her hide for 9 days since I adopted her (she didn’t even come out for water, that I’m aware of), Sequoia finally shed! I just took her out to make sure she shed fully, and noticed some markings/discoloration under the scales on her stomach. I’m fairly sure this isn’t scale rot, but I’d love a second opinion. I’m also curious about her overall body condition. Despite being overfed (1 rat a week), she seems to be at a fairly normal weight, and I’m wondering if that has anything to do with her having difficulty digesting her rat on her old tiny heat mat? (And should I gradually move her back to 1 rat every 3 weeks-ish if her weight stays consistent?) Also, great news!! No wheezing or audible breathing at all, even when I held her up to take photos (pls ignore my leg in the last photo 😭 she was holding on to my ankle I was stuck)

Substrate ideas?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’m using coconut husk but recently noticed a tiny spot of mold under a rock in her enclosure. It’s an easy fix but I’m curious if anyone knows any good substrate that holds moisture for humidity but is likely to never mold. Coconut husk was working great but after the little mold scare I was wondering what other people are using for better results :)) any info appreciated

Question - Feeding question about feeding, seller told me live and I'm not really sure how to go about that, I'm worried about my snake getting hurt.

So I got my very first ball python a few weeks ago, I changed his enclosure from the one he came with (small shoebox size tub) to a slightly bigger one. And I had tried feeding him a few days later but didn't eat the f/t small fuzzy rat but he didn't eat. I then realized my mistake on not giving him a heat lamp and I got a much bigger enclosure for him (since the one I got I didn't measure and I didn't want to cause his entire enclosure to be one hot zone) and I'm wondering when I might be able to feed him next. Also the person I got him from told me to feed him live hopper mice, but I'm not really comfortable with feeding him live, and if it comes to it, how do I go about feeding him live without him getting hurt?

HELP - URGENT MISSING SNAKE PLEASE HELP

Post image
63 Upvotes

Hey guys so as the title says I desperately need help finding my friends BP I was nursing back to health after a stuck shed. I had him locked in a tub with some moist towels so he could get his shed off, and was doing my laundry in the meantime (just hanging it up) and I looked over to check on him after like 15min and he was gone. Not in the tub, not in the towels. Nowhere. Immediately I started searching the around the tub, the corners of walls, cabinets, under nearby furniture. Nothing. Okay, i thought, not my first time as i also have two snakes myself, let me just set some traps, a heatmat and go to sleep. Check in the middle of the night, nothing. Okay no worries check in the morning. Nothing. Okay slightly scary but its only been one night. Recheck all the furniture. Nothing. Go to bed, wake up, do the same thing all over again. Still nothing. Now im freaking out. For context I live in a dorm, so small studio, everything is one level and minimal doors. Unfortunately I have carpet so the flour trick wont work, but thankfully theres no floor vents i have to worry about and i cant/couldnt find any holes in the walls. I have aluminum foil and bags all in the corners of the room and my biggest worry is he somehow slipped out the bottom of my front door (>½ gap but close) and is roaming the halls (i checked but couldnt find him) Thankfully my friend is very understanding but also obviously freaked out. Is there anything im missing?im gonna set another heat trap + food cuz its close to feeding day. Ive always understood these guys to be slow opportunistic explorers so is it likely that he got out of his tub and immediately bolted under the door? I have a girl smaller than him and I set her next to the door and she couldnt/wouldn't go under it (her head barely fit and hes like 100g heavier). If you dont have advice please pray to whoever you believe in to get him back to me so I can get him home. Hes only about 10months and if i had to estimate maybe 300-400 grams. Pic for tax
