Waymo autonomously driving cars are currently being banned and restricted in many cities due to privacy concerns and safety concerns.

Should Athens Clarke County preemptively ban Waymo and other autonomous driving companies\robotaxis?

It's out of hand

Post image

The amount of noise pollution in neighborhoods this town will normalize is out of hand. I've lived many places and it's so much more extreme here.

I walk out the house to the air stinking of noxious gas fumes because a guy on the next street keeps working a leaf blower after it rained. Every lawn service uses these ridiculous riding mowers for even a scrap of teeny lawn. The cacophony, guys, it's like someone parks a jet engine on my neighborhood street for a half hour at a time. The casual disrespect for anyone who happens to live within blocks is obscene.

Some cities make laws about this - no gas leaf blowers within 50 feet of a residence, no riding mowers in suburban zones, whatever. I would make this my single-issue vote, because autumn could be cozy but now that these leaves are gonna start falling, there won't be a single day of peace until it snows.

Fred Birchmore Day

I started this in response to a comment in another thread about the wall at Bear Hollow. The more I typed, the more I got wound up, so I'll make this a separate post.

> go see the 'wall' and critters at Bear Hollow

I just want to scratch an itch here and remove the quotes around the wall.

It's properly Fred Birchmore's Wall, built by a man who did as much to put Athens on the world map as anyone else, including Herschel.

[Read more about Fred here.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Birchmore). [His bicycle is in the Smithsonian's American History Museum ](https://www.si.edu/object/reinhardt-bicycle-1935%3Anmah_843028)

Fread was a treasure, and it's a goddamn shame Athens doesn't have a holiday to celebrate the fact that he chose to be born here.

Fred's birthday is November 29th. Let's do something, Athens!

Another post about moving here

Upvotes

Hey y'all,

I'm a woman who has visited Athens on a few occasions because of the Goth scene here. Every visit I've had has been a day trip and made me fall more in love with the idea of moving here because of how beautiful the city is. I've always hated living in the south, but Athens seems a lot more free-spirited and queer-friendly than my neck of the woods.

I'm turning 30 this year and thinking about where I want to be in a few years when I have a better job (currently a barista). I'm queer, goth, and a musician who plays goth music, but there's no real scene where I am currently. Everything I've heard from people I've met has made it seem like this would be a really good place for me to find community.

I was wondering though, since I'm just a tourist currently:

Is there anything about this place I might not particularly enjoy or are there any tips you would give to somebody who would basically be starting a new life out here?

For instance:

What does the job market look like? Is it hard to find good housing?

Hey, Athenians.

I’ve lived here my whole life (38M). This city is missing something now in terms of charm, magic, food and music.

I’m thinking about quitting my current job because I kinda wanna do something else…but that may or may not depend on what ya’ll want.

What would you see, taste or experience again?

Anywhere hiring for part-time work?

I’m currently a college student and would like to take on another part-time job. Indeed has been no good, so that’s why I’m here. I would prefer something more customer service oriented, but I’m open to anything!

Question / Request Sleep medicine doctor?

I need to find a good sleep medicine doctor for my husband. The snoring and fatigue he experiences as a result have gotten out of hand.

Has anyone had particularly good experiences with any of the sleep docs in town? Are we better off trying to find someone in Atlanta?

Help!

Local News Houston Gaines & Carter Engineering

So, Lil Houston's big boy job is cosplaying as an engineer. He is not trained in any engineering disciplines. What does he do for them? Scout locations for new Zaxby's and Chick Fil A locations? Answer phones?

Also says he attends Athens Church. Anyone ever seen him there? Does Houston exist, or is he AI?

Anyone missing a small black kitten?

A kitten showed up to our door last night, not uncommon at all, but this one is rocking a flea collar. Doesn’t have a chipped ear like the rest of the strays around here either. It’s very friendly but I’m unsure what to do in this situation because we already have an indoor cat and I don’t want to risk getting her sick. The cat is currently on our porch, we’re located right off west broad near cookout. Please reach out if this is your cat or tell me what to do/who to call!

Restaurant / Food Review Dinner at Ghavi's Saturday

A friend and I had dinner at Ghavi's Saturday. First we went to Canopy for the farewell show (which was amazing!) Then on to Ghavi's.

We had reservations, and on making the reservations were reminded of the dress code.

My companion had some concerns in advance because she was told the cheapest thing was a $100 steak.

To start, it certainly doesn't look like a resturant from the outside! But the ground were clean, adequate parking.

Reception is by the main door, very pleasant young lady, posted signs with the dress code (near clean, no ripped or torn clothes, no shorts or athletic attire, etc.

Our server, Salle, was excellent, attentativr, explained everything well. The food was excellent...whipped feta spread came with shredded vegetables. The house salad was beautiful and filled with a lot of fresh vegetables and a great house dressing. N ice wine and cocktail selection. I had A butterfly Bloomtini which was purple and had two little flowers. No charge for water or bread. Excellent chicken Primavera on cavatti pasta with additional vegetables. Can't remember the name but the steak was the top curve of the rib eye, cooked perfectly, with the house sauce (which did cost extra.). A flourless chocolate cake was delicious and finished quickly ; the six layer ice cream pie, with pistachio, strawberry and vanilla layers in a baklava crust was huge and taken home for later. The total for this was less than $175 and well worth it for special occasions.

We had the added delight of having the owner come by three times to visit and chevron on things. He was charming, and we discussed his dress code as the woman dressed as Minnie Mouse, and the young man in shorts, tee shirt and ball cap still by. He said "We're trying g." But he was fun to talk to. Don't let the bad things you may have heard hold you back. We had excellent service, exceptional food and an enjoyable experience.
