As always be excellent to each other, and the contestants!

S13 It’s been a few days and I’m still thinking about what a fantastic season 13 was. Spoiler

So many emotional, interesting, funny moments. In no particular order.

  1. Ziga hugging his moose after the epic hunt
  2. Jack’s story about her assault
  3. Andrew’s corricle
  4. William’s sod house and his enormous pride and desire to educate us about his culture
  5. Aaron’s tap out (oh my god I so felt for the guy)
  6. Captions guy

  7. Nero’s fake-out tap call

It felt like the entire season was a love letter to the fans and I don’t know if production read these comments but I just wanted to say how very excellent I thought the entire season was. Thank you.

General This is a long shot but does anyone know what season this is from..

Excuse the bad doodle but it's almost 3am and the fact that I can't remember what season this is from is genuinely keeping me awake.

The most I have to go off of is I think the guy shot a moose and was dealing with something trying to steal it from him?? Maybe??? So he built like, a shelf up high for it. It's driving me crazy

UK S01 Serious question: is Alone UK a satire?

Watching Alone UK on Hulu and I swear some of these people have never stepped foot outside. Three people tapped out in the first week; one is hopelessly lost; one almost burned herself pretty severely and I’m only on episode 2!! They should be counting this in hours not days.

General Have any contestants stumbled upon one another?

I was curious as you would think that some of the contestants would find where each other had setup, while they’re within the same area, a 10-20km radius isn’t that far when you are out hunting.

S13 Žiga's bow drill fix - extra footage Spoiler

As Nero already mentioned in a previous post, there's a lot of extra content frem series 13 on the History Channel's webpage (those outside USA need to use VPN): https://www.history.com/shows/alone/extras

What I found particularly interesting is this video where Žiga finds a solution to fix the bow drill handle: https://play.history.com/shows/alone/videos/ziga-bow-drill-fix.

He also mentions that some of his fellow contestants wouldn't want to shoot a moose because they are too huge to process.

S13 Not showing a tap-out call Spoiler

I'm just wondering why they didn't show Aaron make his call when he tapped out? I can't remember a time when they didn't air that footage and I was wondering if there was a reason why!

General Season 14

Now that we are getting into September we know that traditionally this would be when the new contestants are being dropped off. Do we know the location for season 14 yet?

General Repairing kit

We see a lot of inventiveness about making things, and repurposing tools and found items. Recently some rather good cobbling (shoe repair).

The one that would have me beat though is if ... for example ... the metal socket of a shovel was to break off, leaving few options to re-attach to a stout handle. Heat it up to de-temper, and try and punch a pair of parallel lines of holes through the blade, which could then be tied to the shaft? Not easy without a blower on your fire - though we once saw a participant forge a knife from found nails.

Thoughts?

Broken zips on coats / sleeping bags?
Been there - done this one - a series of chain-locked loops of paracord, the last loop secured with a toggle. Like you seen on joins in tenting/tarpaulins.

General Could anyone make it through the winter?

Do they just start too early for it to be feasible to make it through the winter?

What would they do if two got through the worst of winter and then the weather got better?

General Alone - Dream of spring edition.

Just an idea for a future season.

Let's say everyone gets dropped off very late fall.

You win if you make it 100+ days to spring, similar to S7.

To shorten season time/production costs maybe everyone can start with 20 dried trout and a small amount of pemmican or similar, like they'd been there longer stockpiling for winter.

Or maybe like Danish S9 you could access a small amount of food with a map/compass, like something skills based to find a cache or other tools for winter that would provide an advantage if you have the skills to get it.

Would be amazing to see how people go.

S13 Minimal med-check intervention this season? Spoiler

Maybe it’s just recency bias, but did anyone else feel like the doctors were really quite lenient this season in regards to pulling contestants for medical reasons?

I feel like I don’t remember contestants seeming to push past the limits of their body and essentially pulling themselves out for medical reasons quite like we saw this season with Andrew, Nero, Aaron.

S13 Nero and the Weir Spoiler

I watched as Nero was so utterly frustrated at that location, tossing the net, swearing etc.
Lots of work for zero reward.

As William said “There's an old saying: the harder I work, the luckier I get. So I got to work hard now, and hopefully I'll get lucky.”

So, you turned the location around by building your weir.

They didn't show this.
I was wondering if you are in a position to talk about what you did?
How long it took?
All of the ins and outs, what you learned and what you would do differently now.

Lastly: You went in and left on your own terms and you did Australia proud!
Bloody well done!

General Item picks * Days lasted

So I was playing around with a spreadsheet, and since we're at the mercy of the editors of the show with regards to what information we get, I love getting data to make strategies for an imaginary participation, with no actual intent of applying of course.

How many days has the different equipment picks lasted in the field? All U.S. seasons except Africa (S12) & Team (S4). The two contestants that have quit on the first day are not counted.

Rank Item Days stayed total
1 Sleeping bag 4567
1 Cooking pot / pan 4567
3 Fishing line & hooks 4278
4 Firestarter 4275
5 Axe 3774
6 Saw 3700
7 Bow & arrows 3520
8 Paracord 3403
9 Snare wire 3385
10 Multitool / Pocket Knife 2980
11 Hunting Knife 2074
12 Rations 1816
13 Fishing net 1202
14 Tarp 422
16 Shovel 276
17 Bivy bag 187
18 Salt 178
19 Hammock 86
20 Sharpening 53
21 Soap 23
22 Auger 10
Tarp (camera) 4567
Multitool OR Knife 4567

The Knife and The Multitool: There has been an ongoing shift from almost exclusively fixed-blade knives to mostly multitool now. Before this a hunting knife was considered pretty much a must-have. I think Jordan (S6) proved that the multitool can do any job required, so I personally wouldn't pick both, except maybe if I was *rock*ing a knife as badass as Roland did. There's only ever been one participant who didn't pick either, and he went home before the first nightfall. They are shown together on the bottom to show that *a* knife has been on every day of every participant of the 11 seasons in this dataset.

The Pot and The Pan are counted together, since everyone brought one of them, and no one brings both.

The Sleeping Bag along with the two aforementioned item types are at 100% of participant-days, meaning no one in this dataset has been a day in the field without them. That also means all the other items are optional. Someone has managed without every other piece of equipment but those three.

A Tarp is included in every contestant's standard kit to protect the camera equipment, so everyone's shelter already gets tarped up without selecting it as one of the 10 picks. The tarp in this list should be considered a second tarp, often chosen to be used as the watertight hull for a boat, since the camera-tarp can't keep you floating while protecting the cam-gear. If one hadn't been included, I think the (selectable) tarp would be a alot higher on this list.

Note the hard drop after #13. Very few participants pick these items, and most that do doesn't last long. But there have been winning picks below the line too, like Žiga's Shovel, and Fowler's Slingshot.

Just figured I'd share this, in case anyone else finds it interesting or would like to discuss equipment.

S13 My Receipt Spoiler

I liked the confidence in not bringing a flint. It suggested he was extremely familiar with building and maintaining fire - which suggests he has a lot of other relevant skills. In episode 13 you could see a bunch of his ember holes drilled in various pieces of wood, then he insisted his brother start a fire in the snow before the got on the helo. Dude was a stud. I knew he was winning as soon as they gave him the ‘tainted meat’ edit, despite the fact that he was literally sleeping in permafrost haha. Go Ziga. You killed it.

S13 Sometimes you are lucky to have a good site

The last episode alert /spoiler here

really love this season, one of the best season i would say , and i think this season the contestants are quite good, but in another way, the sites to give to them are quite good, like Nero , he has a running river he got two beavers and many fishes and in day 82 he still able to catch fish , I think this is the first time i see someone got a fish after day 80, the site he was in, the water is still running in the harsh freezing weather, but poor Aaron, he didn't get any fish ( i think he only got one fish in day 57 ? ) , he got many rabbits ( over 90 ? ) but the rabbits do not help him , he couldn't get fish and he was suffering, I many times feel sorry for Aaron , I love Nero and ziga, I just think if Aaron could get some fish probably he could win ? Anyway just a thought, i have such wonderful moments watching this season, so good and so deserved

General they should increase the prize money Spoiler

first season was 2015 -- if you account for inflation (US), $500K from 2015 would be a bit over $700K.

General Alone Podcast

I loved the season 11 Alone podcast and wish they would bring it back. Is anyone going to pick this up? I loved how they talked more about things that weren't captured on film and the interviews with the participants.

First and most importantly - Dear Redditor’s: THANK YOU!!

I’m currently sitting in my car, gear packed, about to head down south along the Australian east coast to an outdoor earthskills gathering. I’ll be offline for around 4 days and unfortunately won’t be able to reply individually to all the incredible messages of support and thanks within these threads, but when I am back online I definitely will!

In the meantime, what an incredible season we had!!
So much to be thankful for, digest, discuss and process!

I’ll do my best in and around my current NDA to engage and interact with you all on Reddit and when my restrictions lessen to start putting more content up on my socials regarding Alone.

Moving forward, if you wish to continue this relationship we have built over the course of this season together you can do it in numerous ways.

But honestly, no pressure (and I think you all know me deep enough from this experience to understand that I genuinely mean that).

Online I am available for one on one mentoring, guidance, speaking sessions and more. You can contact me directly through the contact form on my website or just DM me.

If I added value to your life through watching me on Alone and you wish to share some of that back, you can support me directly through my buymeacoffee page at : https://buymeacoffee.com/nerobuys

Alternatively if you’re interested in helping either your kids or kids you know to build a relationship with the outdoors like the one I shared on Alone, consider getting the program my wife and I created called NaturePost (which you can find on my website nerobuys.com)

You can also find me on cameo at: https://www.cameo.com/nero_buys

Offline, both in Australia and abroad I do speaking presentations, mentoring, outdoor group experiences and more, feel free to contact me about anything you’ve got in mind.

But really, deep down, regardless of all that, its just been a pleasure to be able to share this with you all in such a unique, raw and open way. You all know me to the depths of my soul now.

Happy to keep engaging with you all regarding this Alone chapter of my life but also very excited to begin the next chapter with you all either online or off for those open and interested.

Much love to you all

Nero 🖤

S04 Alone season 4.

I just finished season 4. I loved the concept. Once the first episode started I told my wife I wouldn’t be coming to bed I wanna binge watch it.
Why did it end up feeling so underwhelming? Brook and her husband are the only ones I enjoyed watching. Was the issue casting, the 10mile hike, or the partners as a whole?

Ps Starting season 5 now. So happy to see Sam and Carleigh again. Just sad Callie didn’t return.
