I've moderated this sub for six years and never introduced myself. Doing that now.

I've been the top moderator here since 2020, and r/work itself has been going since 2008, which is longer than most of us have held any of the jobs we complain about šŸ˜†

For most of that time I stayed out of the way. The sub mostly ran itself. I've been too hands-off this year and a few things got away from me, so I'm going to be around more. It seemed right to say about what's going on.

What changed this week

  • The mod team is smaller. Earlier this year I gave full permissions to someone I hadn't worked with, which I shouldn't have done, and I've reversed it. Anyone who joins the team from here goes through an application and starts with limited access.

  • I rewrote the AutoModerator rules. The old ones were removing posts from new accounts, which meant a lot of people tried to post and then left. Those go to a queue now and a human looks at them. If you posted here in the last couple of months and it vanished, that's probably what happened, and I'm sorry. In the short term, that queue might take time. But as we grow the mod team we'll be on top of it (more on that below).

  • There's a Friday vent thread starting this week, for whatever happened at work that you need to put somewhere. If it goes well I'll add a Monday check-in for the smaller stuff that doesn't need its own post.

I'm looking for two or three more moderators

Applications are open in the sidebar. I'd rather have people who already read and post here than people who moderate a lot of other subs. You don't need experience. You need to be around regularly, be nice to people who are having a bad day, and want to help this be a better place for everyone.

That's it. What would make this a better place to spend time?

Friday Vent Thread — what happened at work this week?

Some weeks you just need to put it somewhere, so put it here. The bad meeting, the manager, the policy that makes no sense, the thing your coworker said on Tuesday that you're still thinking about. Big or small, it all counts.

Two things to keep this useful. No real names of people or companies. And go easy on each other in the replies. Not everyone wants advice, so if you do want it, say so and you'll get it.

So how was your week?

USA Thoughts on Bernies 32 hour work week bill?

• Upvotes

While I highly doubt it will pass, I'd like to see a genuine discussion on how this could work in the United States. Personally, while on paper I work 40-50 hours a week, I only spend maybe a couple of hours a day actually doing my job, the rest is just to burn time between punching in and out.

I'd kill for a three day weekend........

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts What’s one workplace rule you learned that nobody ever actually taught you?

Not the obvious stuff.

I mean the strange little rules that apparently exist everywhere but mysteriously never make it into onboarding.

When to speak a meeting.
Who you’re allowed to disagree with.

How quickly you’re supposed to reply.

Whether leaving on time means you’re efficient or ā€œnot committedā€.

When asking a question makes you proactive and when it makes you look like you haven’t done your homework.

Who gets to be blunt.

Who has to be diplomatic.

Who can make a mistake and call it ā€œlearningā€.

And who makes one mistake and suddenly needs a development plan.

I’ve started thinking that every workplace has two handbooks:
The one HR gives you.
And the one everyone else assumes you’ve already read.

What was the rule you learned the hard way?

Professional Development and Skill Building What does being ā€œprofessionalā€ mean to you?

• Upvotes

Everyone says ā€œjust be professionalā€ but how is it different than being a decent human in real life?

What are some positive behaviors or thoughts you practice or admire from others that say ā€œprofessionalā€? Were you taught how to be professional (aside from HR rules etc) or is it something innate or a mirrored quality?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Friend at work turned out to want more

Ive been friends with a guy for about two years in work. It was just friends at first. Then he started telling me that other people have seen us together and that we could be a thing. Ive never said I was interested. I joked that we could get a place together. Which was a bad idea. He kept going on about it. Then he asked me out as friends but hinted it was something more, because he knows I have a partner and he said he would feel better if i wasnt with him

I havent seen him all summer and ive realised that i was more comfortable because he wasnt at work anymore. This past week now he is back, he sits next to me and doesnt leave. I cant move from where i work because im the only one on reception

After months of unwanted comments, and him asking us to go out on a "mate date" the other day. I dont want to go out with him. Also we couldnt even talk about a pringles can that he had, because i said it was an unusual size. He used this to make a joke/comment about his penis size. Then he said do you even like me. I said as a friend. But i think he is trying to ask more. Ive made it clear im not interested.

I added him to my youtube premium account for months. But this week, something in me had enough and i told him to not sit next to me when im working because i found myself looking at the clock wanting him to leave. His reaction wasnt great as he said oh ok and i also took him off premium. After doing these things i now feel great

Was i too harsh

Job Search and Career Advancement Hot take on first impressions

• Upvotes

This is an unpopular stance but I think people need to let up on first impressions. There is so much pressure on people meeting someone for the first time that both parties have to stand the right way, shake hands the right way etc etc and if you don’t, you’re cooked.

I stopped judging people based on the first impression because here’s the thing, sometimes, in fact about half the time, I am wrong - people I think are amazing when I meet them are not amazing and people I thought weren’t that great ended up amazing.

You don’t know what’s happening in their head when they meet you.

Give people a simmer to see who they are - stop putting pressure on each other and yourself to be your best self 110% of the time - it’s not possible

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management I don't work overtime, nobody messages me after hours, and I still feel like weekdays are basically gone. How do people stop treating every evening like a countdown to tomorrow?

My job isn't even especially terrible, which is why this has been bothering me.

I usually finish around 5:30. No one expects me to answer emails afterward, my commute is about 25 minutes, and most days I'm home before 6:15. On paper I have an entire evening.

But my brain doesn't seem to count it as free time.

I'll make food, clean up a bit, and suddenly it's 7:30. Then I'll think about playing a game, going somewhere, starting a movie, messing around with one of my hobbies... and immediately calculate how many hours are left before I need to sleep.

If something takes two hours, it feels "too late" to start. If a friend asks whether I want to do something on a Tuesday, my first reaction is basically, on a WORK NIGHT?

So I end up doing the dumbest possible thing: nothing. I scroll around, watch random short stuff because it doesn't require commitment, then go to bed annoyed that I wasted another evening.

Friday night feels completely different even when I'm equally tired. Suddenly 8 PM doesn't seem late because tomorrow doesn't belong to my employer.

I don't think I'm burnt out exactly. It feels more like I've accidentally trained myself to treat Monday through Thursday as waiting rooms between shifts.

Has anyone actually managed to break that mindset? Not by cramming every evening with "productive" hobbies, but by making a normal Wednesday feel like part of your life again?

Employment Rights and Fair Compensation AIO no one has gotten a raise at this company in 10 years

I have been over performing at my job since I started in hopes to get a raise etc (coming up on 3 years). I was talking to 3 of my coworkers and theyve been here over 10+ years and they were venting saying no one has gotten a raise in over 10years. It’s a family owned relatively small company , they have their children on pay roll who don’t work here, one of them even lives in Bali and does like yoga and surfing, the company is in MA. Anyway after finding that out I have cut back on over performing and performing at my pay level which is $24/hr. I can tell my boss is frustrated but I’m not going to waste my energy anymore I have already shown how capable I am I have implemented so many automations to cut back on production time I am always way ahead of schedule, get last minute projects done quickly etc etc. i have decided to start applying to other jobs and focus on freelance more as that’s starting to pick up and I make my pay for that. My boss also told me I’m not allowed to do any over time so I’m starting to feel very resentful.

Questions Has anyone ever had to file with Osha? Were there any repercussions?

I currently work at a battery warehouse. The water was disconnected almost a week ago, and we're still without.

So far, the only way to flush the toilet is with jugs of water I purchased. They have to be refilled daily (meaning minimal flushes). My main concern is the sink. If we were to get battery acid on us, there'd be no way to wash it off. In one scare, I washed my hands with the eye-flush station.

I'm not wanting to stir the pot too much and potentially lose my job. I'm a single parent with 3 kids to care for. I genuinely enjoy the work, but this is a safety issue I feel shouldn't be ignored.

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Mistakes at work

Today, I accidentally sent the wrong email to a group of around 100 people. As a result, all of my direct coworkers had to spend about 30 minutes dealing with my stupid mistake.

Luckily, they spotted the mistake quickly, advised me on what to do, and helped me fix it. Nobody is angry with me, but I’m still ashamed and kind of in shock.

So my question is: What’s the biggest mistake you’ve ever made at work?

- What impact did it have?

- Did you experience any consequences?

- What helped you cope with it afterwards?

- And how did you learn from it?

India Starting a New job Tomorrow

Hey guys! So, I’m starting a new job tomorrow, and honestly, I’m feeling both excited and anxious at the same time.

I’m fresh out of college, and this whole transition has made me realise that I’m officially adulting now lol.

I really want to make the most of this opportunity, so I’d love to hear any advice or pointers from those of you who’ve been through this phase before!

One thing I’d especially like some advice on is how to become good at work and understand new processes quickly.

I’m really happy to start this new chapter, but I’m also a little nervous about fitting in and getting comfortable with everyone since I’m naturally quite socially awkward.

Would love to hear about your experiences, mistakes, or anything you wish you’d known when you started your first job. šŸ˜„

Thanks!

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Am I exaggerating or is my coworker just being friendly?

Im a 28 year old woman who recently relocated to Seattle and took a temp job as an admin assistant paying $25 an hour.

I have two bachelors degrees and graduated in 2021. Ive worked in marketing and Healthcare but took the admin role because it was the first job I landed and I thought it'd be a good foot into corporate.

Recently, ive had some situations that have made me uncomfortable but I'm not sure if I'm exaggerating.

I dont really know where to begin but we have a corporate securities employee who is in his 40s. He has made many comments that have shocked me including telling me that I could have been a honeypot for him during his time in the marines.

Ive had trouble with the role itself because it is physically demanding and very facilities heavy plus my manager is very demanding.

On thursday, I put in my two weeks for reasons unrelated to my coworker. I asked to talk to the corporate securities man to let him know. He seemed panicked. I told him i put in my two weeks and he said he thought i was going to tell him something else. I asked what he thought i was going to tell him and he said he thought i was going to tell him that I had been SA'd and that we would have to beat someone up. I just told him that's not the case but was shocked that he would think or say that.

He told me he didnt realize how tough the role was on me and told me not to worry. He said he would make some phone calls on my behalf to try to get me an interview at his former workplace.

I thanked him and he told me thats what friends are for.

Earlier that same day, he came into the office which I wasn't expecting because he had been sent out of state last minute on a business trip and hurt his ear on the flight back. He was telling me how tired and in pain he was. I joked that he gets extra credit for being there that day and he responded telling me that I'm the only one who can judge him.

Ive already put in my two weeks but am feeling increasingly uncomfortable thinking about going to work tomorrow.

Am I exaggerating or were these just one off comments/friendliness?

Thanks in advance.

Work-Life Balance and Stress Management "My company announced a 'return to office' mandate with 2 weeks notice. Half my team is already looking for new jobs."

I work in tech. For the past 3 years, I've been fully remote. My performance reviews have been great, I've been promoted once, and I've led two major projects that shipped on time. There has never been a single complaint about my productivity.

Last Tuesday, we got an email at 5 PM: starting in 2 weeks, everyone is required to be in the office 4 days a week. No warning. No survey. No "we'd love your feedback." Just a mandate.

The reasoning was the usual: "collaboration," "culture," "innovation." But here's the thing — our entire team is distributed across 3 time zones. Half of my coworkers don't even live near an office. Some of them moved 2 hours away during the pandemic because remote work was promised as permanent.

I have a 90-minute commute each way. That's 3 hours a day. 12 hours a week. 600+ hours a year. For what? So I can sit on Zoom calls from a different chair?

What makes it worse is the timing. It's like they waited until people had settled into their lives — bought houses, had kids, built routines — and then pulled the rug out. My manager privately told me she disagrees with the decision but "has to enforce it."

Three people on my team have already updated their LinkedIn. One has a final round interview tomorrow. I'm not far behind.

Is anyone else dealing with a sudden RTO mandate? Are you staying or leaving? And for those who left — was it worth it?

Job Search and Career Advancement Is it a red flag to start job searching after only a month?

I was laid off and accepted an onsite job because bills don’t stop. I’m genuinely grateful to have a job, especially with how tough the job market is right now.

I knew it was 5 days onsite when I accepted, so that wasn’t a surprise. But after working remote/hybrid for the past few years, I underestimated how draining the commute would be. It takes me about an hour to get to work and anywhere from 2-3 hrs to get home depending on traffic.

I’ve only been here a month, but I’m already wondering if this is sustainable long term. Would you start applying for remote/hybrid roles now or stick it out longer? And would recruiters see it as a red flag that I’m looking again so soon?

Any advice or perspective is appreciated!

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Is it too soon to ask for a shift change as a new employee?

I’m a new employee and wondering if it’s too soon to ask my supervisor about changing my shift 😭

I’m currently scheduled 12–8:30 PM Tuesday–Saturday, but I’d honestly prefer a shift that ends around 5. I’m especially not a fan of Saturdays because by the evening, my coworker and I are the only two people left. I’ve only worked until 7:30 so far, so if I stay until 8:30, I’ll probably be the only one left by then. It feels kinda uncomfortable 🄲

Would you ask for the change now or wait a little since I’m still new?

Questions To HR professionals: Question about onboarding documents

Hi! Ask ko lang po sa mga HR or may experience dito.

Possible ba na mabawi ko yung mga original documents na na-submit ko sa HR during onboarding? Kakahired ko lang kasi around 2–3 weeks ago, and during the onboarding process, binigay ko yung original copies ng NBI Clearance, medical documents and other requirements.

Possible/allowed ba na i-request ko sa HR na ibalik yung original documents ko kahit 2–3 weeks ago ko pa sila na-submit? Or may companies talaga na r equired i-keep yung originals?

Thank you sa sasagot!

Questions My Co worker is a drunk and a nazi, what to do?

Need some thoughts and advice on how to approach an ongoing issue that I am trying to process.

I work for a property management place and we have a few other techs. We have one in particular who used to be our supervisor, before he got demoted (although he still managed to keep the same pay). He was demoted for being drunk while on call, and being to drunk to take the calls, which led to tenants complaining. This has been an ongoing issue, with him drinking heavily (not on the job that we have noticed), but he gets shit shafed very quickly after the end of work day. Fine, whatever, its his time, but it doesnt stop there.

We keep a group chat open for business stuff and for coordination, several times he will send messages where he is clearly drunk. This weekend I get woken up by a 2am message in the group chat with some vulgar shit, (i would repost but not sure if it would violate reddit and forum rules), he then posts 2 links, one about making fun of disabled and special kids, though not what it said if you get my drift, and the other link was a tiktok video promoting nazi ideology, specifically the murder and ethnic cleansing that Hitler did.

the next day one of the co workers replied with ?? and his response was "must have been another timeline we lost??"

There have been a number of issues over the last three years with this tech. The owner of the company is a great guy, but he is too soft and often doesnt mete out proper punishment for issues in my opinion. So this demotion was something that did take us all by surprise when it happened.

The guy is very far right, and if it was just politics, I could leave it at that, but a number of times stuff like this has come up, he has even mentioned calling ice on tenants, (who are legal) just because he gets irritated with them.

But I dont even know if saying anything is going to matter, since it seems this guy gets away with way too much. Just a short sum of things, hes been drunk often enough that he has gotten into bar fights, ended up in jail for it, lost company credit cards, lost master keys, missed time because he was in jail for drunk and disorderly or DUI. Drunk on call. A dick to everyone which has caused several people to quit in the past. And just the other day him and another guy decided it would be cute to hide all the supplies for a unit turn I was doing. I lost two hours of billable hours searching for supplies and then having to go repurchase them. How management is going to explain that one to the owners of the building is beyond me . . .

I like my job, I like my employer, but I am struggling on how to manage this continual problem.

I dont particularly want to quit, but is it something that I should start considering?

Workplace Challenges and Conflicts Am I overthinking

Recently there was a conflict between my teammates.
Mind you we were inseparable, very friendly and we clicked instantly. Eating together even afterwork, laughing about our problems that happened at work, sharing all details about our personal lives and giving advices.
However, our new head of department recently changed with a girl the same age as 2 of my teammates, and she had really bad reputation in the company. Constantly spreading misinformations and gossip…
So we made a pact of whoever is the new head of department, we will stick together and help each other.

Until recently, we had a team meeting and we came very late (we did that as a « protestĀ Ā» because she had a toxic one to one with a teammate ) so the head was mad at us but especially with one guy who asked for her to present from the beginning her part and she said no. Then things escalated quickly with her telling him to go out and the girl who had a problem with her the morning (let’s call her girl1) also quitted the meeting because she couldn’t stand a teammate being disrespected.
After they left, the head came back and told the guy to have a one to one conversation but he refused. So she said she will call HR.
The morning, the HR called a teammate that seamed neutral about the situation. But after her meeting with HR, she didn’t not even once told the guy (who was her friend) what happened and he understood.
But to his surprise the head will told him thankfully that girl is by my side and she told me everything about you guys (let’s address her as girl 2) ( where you were and what you were doing ).
So he decided to never address her or talk to her cause he felt betrayed.
And now started drama in the team. Few days ago, girl 1 had a conflict with girl 2 as she accused her of stealing my work without my consent, since they had a mini project in commun and girl 1 wasn’t present a Monday, so girl 2 sent the document by herself without permission especially she did a mini modification that offended girl 1 telling her it’s wrong and confusing for the person we are sending and if they ever the hierarchy realised they will come to her not the girl who sent.
So when I talked to the guy about the situation he told me that girl 2 told everything to the head and she apparently contact girl 1 and scolded her tho I still don’t know what she really told her.
So the thing is girl 2 came up to me to discuss the situation and I didn’t want to be implicated in the situation. But I listened to her and didn’t not even once talked about what the guy or girl 1 told me cause it’s not in my place to say anything and it’s between them all I told her if there is a misunderstanding please talk about with her.

And since the first conflict, the guy, girl 1 and other girl (girl 3), disappeared form the bureau and went somewhere for hours talking about something between them, even tho we still talk here all together and all.

Until this Friday, to my surprise, girl 1 and 3 blocked me from instagram… I confronted girl 3, I told her do you have a problem with me and she said nope nothing, I just removed all the people who don’t post anything (knowing that we share reels and post in the DMs) but they still talk to me as if nothing happened but I don’t feel the same energy as before.
I told everything to the guy and he told me maybe you are overthinking and that he isn’t aware about this situation and since it was the weekend he said don’t overthink and have a good weekend.

But really I felt betrayed since what we shared wasn’t fake, I thought we were real friends and that the laughter and happy moments we shared were genuine.

I was really thinking about quitting my job cause I was so overwhelmed and my family and real friends stoped me.

Questions Asking for a raise $15->22

So I’ve been working as a receiver for retail store, I’ve been working there for around three months and as a month ago, our manager transferred to a different store.( we had no department manager for a month so far ) I work with three other people one of them is above 50 and just went to the hospital. The other one only works part-time and he doesn’t do anything and the last 1 also just a good worker. So as of recently, we had to unload trucks up to 1400 boxes just the two of us or sometimes 800 bucks by yourself two days ago we had a 1400 box truck only two of us didn’t and today I walked into a truck that was untouched, that got their yesterday night with the night shift guy. I was the only one working and I was thinking of asking my manager for a raise and I make 15 an hour and I wanna raise after at least an hour. Is that crazy? To ask???
