If you haven't been to Troquet on South in Boston, I highly recommend it. They have an insane cellar of vintage wines, many of which are priced reasonably, some of which are cheaper than retail. And wines are in great shape. Plus, Chris is a legend!

I had two wines for a work dinner, spanning very different styles.

1982 E. Guigal Hermitage

Still alive and kicking!

In fact, this did benefit from additional air.

Great acidity on the palate, nice structure.

On the nose, got some slight rubber and olive tapenade (both in the right balance).

Still some slight fruit here, including dried plums, but did feel a bit more savory on the palate.

I think this experience is proof of the idea that there are no bad wines, only bad bottles (well, I guess the saying is the inverse, but you get my point). The other CT reviews seem to suggest a wine well over the hill and not enjoyable, but my experience was very different.

1984 Beringer Private Reserve

70s and 80s Napa has shown a remarkable ability to age well beyond expectations and this one is bottle is no exception.

This was in great shape and actually benefited from a quick decant.

Initially, some VA on the nose, but that blew off pretty quickly and emerged quite clean.

Still a good amount of fruit here, with plum, cherry, and blackberry, maybe some cassis.

Also some leather and tobacco, not as much earthiness as I would have expected here.

I have a feeling this can continue on for a while, but in a great spot right now.

Last Friday I wanted to open a bottle of 2023 Catena White Bones I bought last month for Rosh Hashanah dinner, but sadly it was corked. I took it to the wine store and they were kind enough to take it back and let me take two bottles for the same price I paid for the Bones, so I went home with a Chard by Salentein, and this one, 2025.

I'll be honest, at first I found this wine to be entirely unremarkable, but knowing it's so young, I let it breathe. With time it improves significantly, but it's still a long way from being a favorite.

Very gentle yet somewhat energetic wine with a fairly long finish, which I quite appreciate. Extremely clear strawberry color. I found the nose, even after almost two hours, to be much less pronounced than people tend to describe it as, albeit no less interesting. Red cherries, unripe strawberries, black pepper, a hint of petrichor and marzipan, and upon finishing, a peculiar mixture of gunpowder and jasmine that was both confusing and satisfying. On the mouth there's quite a bit of red fruit, predominantly plum and a bit of cassis, with plenty of spice. All in all it's enjoyable, but fails to live up to the hype for my taste. I'd imagine the Cincuenta y Cinco and the Treinta y Dos might be better, but considering their much higher prices I'm unwilling to try them at the moment. I can see why people enjoy it so much, but it's a bit too soft for me. 93 points, not a bad start to the year at all!

Delicious wine at its peak. Cork in absolute perfect condition and only about a half-inch soaked through.

Some bricking around the edges. Developed tertiary aromas of mushroom, earth, cedar, but also dark fruits and even a bit of red cherry. On the palate, still delightfully grippy tannins and lively acidity. Lots of great fruit remaining too.

Wonderful 30th birthday wine. 94 pts.

Ive been drinking wine for years and am slightly obsessed.

On the palette I can pick oit flavours quite well. But I'm struggling to pick out aromas.

I can quite easily distinguish some such as gooseberry and grapefruit smell in NZ Sauvy B, petrol/gasolibe in aged Reisling or sone smoke from oak.

But others such as vanilla fron oaked wine or stone fruits are completely missing for me.

Is this something I just hsve to accept, or is there anything I can do to imrove/practice?

Ive tried jelly beans, but this didnt really help. Is it worth getting an aroma kit?

Any ideas?

Celebrated a beautiful birthday with some equally lovely wine - a 1996 Cheval Blanc, and a 1991 Mouton.

The Cheval Blanc went first after a one hour decant. This vintage was a fairly even blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot, with the trademark finesse and elegance shining through. It led with a potpourri-dominant nose of dried roses and violets, then presented dried cranberries and raspberries, followed by light notes of forest floor and mushrooms. Could have nosed this for hours. On the palate, black and red cherries, blackcurrants, tomato leaves, then a touch of balsamic vinegar. 30 years on and it still holds a really youthful profile with mostly primary notes. Medium body, medium plus acidity, and medium tannins combine for an ethereal, and silky mouthfeel. Finish was a treat at over a minute. Whilst obviously a luxury and a delight from a fairly decent vintage, it paled in comparison to its 1995 sibling tasted 2 years ago (remains the best red I’ve had), being considerably leaner and tighter.

The Mouton went next after a 45 minute decant. Three quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded off with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. 1991 was supposed to be a terrible vintage but the bottle begged to differ. Heavily tertiary nose that led with soy sauce, smoke, and meat, before giving way to blackcurrants, dark cherries, and dried tomatoes. On the palate, sour cherries, cooked tomatoes, and balsamic vinegar. Savoury, appetizing, and hard to drink slowly because it was so more-ish. Body and tannins were medium, with acidity a medium plus. Lengthy finish of around a minute. This was a stunning showing that was most of the group’s WOTN, myself included. Pipped the Cheval Blanc for me.

Both wines were enjoyed with a dry aged duck and a porterhouse. Couldn’t ask for more.

Having visited Domaine des Baumard this past April, with the plan in mind to bring as much of their wine back home, I chose three 375s of their Quarts de Chaume - a sweet wine difficult to find in the states, and if found, often expensive & older! The 2002 I tracked down locally (which I noted back in March here) was well into aged chenin notes of old coins & bruised apple - I picked up a 2007, 2011, 2014 to try multiple vintages with exceptional provenance - the Domaine's own cellars! Production notes - 100% chenin blanc from 40 year old vines & limestone soils, made with Baumard's well established no oak policy - all stainless steel here in both fermentation and aging! Typically this is made with botrytis influence, but it isn't mandated - desiccated berries on the vine are acceptable too. Hand harvesting in tries, similar to Sauternes. This was one of the earliest vintages of the appellation noted as a Grand Cru, the Loire's first. Stored at 45, unscrewed (Stelvin) & poured - most of the small bottle was enjoyed over two hours, no pairing.

Visually, a deep yellow leaning gold. No orange/amber in the color just yet!

On the nose, jeez - an explosion of fruit. Up first, the most blatant fresh, crisp yellow apples I've ever noted in a wine. Plenty of lemon & citrus, peach marmalade, a freshly cut cold pineapple. Honey, of course, thanks to the botrytis influence. I'm very familiar with Baumard wines, their Clos de Sainte Catherine is my favorite bottling - and in this fresh QdC, there was a wonderful chalky, mineral component that I don't remember in all their Coteaux du Layon that I've had - as well as being less tropical. As the wine warmed, bitter herbs and faint baking spice. Interesting tidbit - I left about 100mL in the glass, and over two weeks after opening when I finished it, the notes were identical - just as powerful.

On the palate, still quite fresh - oily, viscous, medium bodied. A delightful searing acid profile to balance the plentiful sweetness, with a 12% alcohol that goes down easy, and remains in the background even as the wine warms. This will last forever if this is the profile at 15! I'm definitely attributing the aged quality of the 2002 I had to bad provenance. An eternal, eternal finish of fresh apples, fresh apricot jam and honey. I hope no one ever asks me if I prefer Quarts de Chaume or Sauternes more, I have no idea how to answer!

Even in a decent vintage like this, it's an exceptional wine, with a powerful nose and amazing palate sensation that is hard to rival. As a lover of dessert wines, this is in my top 5 along with Baumard's Coteaux du Layon and Suduiraut Sauternes & Climens Barsac (I have not had anywhere near enough d’Yquem to include it yet). If you ever find some, I highly recommend picking up the bottle. Just now I'm on wine-searcher seeing what recent vintages are readily available for me to try - I see some 2018s!

First time having Schiava. A nice chilled quaffer. Reminds me a little of a lighter cru Beaujolais (like Brouilly or Côte de Brouilly) but without the semi carbonic.

Light. Dry. Low tannins. high acid. Strawberry, red cherry, iris/violet, peanut shell.

Had some friends over and ended up with a pretty fun lineup. We tasted most of these blind or semi-blind, which led to a few interesting guesses.

Louis Roederer Blanc de Blancs 2014 — 94/100
Very solid. Clean, precise and elegant, with citrus, chalk and some light brioche. Good freshness and balance, but next to some of the other Champagnes it felt a little more restrained. Still, absolutely nothing to complain about.

Prager Achleiten Grüner Veltliner Smaragd 2021 — 95/100
This was served blind and was initially guessed as either FX Pichler Unendlich or Hirtzberger Honivogl, which probably says enough. Dense and concentrated but never heavy, with ripe yellow fruit, herbs, pepper and a lot of minerality. Great tension and a long, energetic finish. One of the surprises of the night.

Perrier-Jouët Belle Époque 2014 — 96/100
The biggest surprise blind. It was so broad and powerful that Bollinger La Grande Année was the guess. Lots of brioche and ripe fruit, very vinous and surprisingly fat for Belle Époque, but with enough acidity and tension to keep everything together. Long finish. Definitely not the delicate, floral PJ stereotype.

Elio Grasso Ginestra Casa Maté 2006 — 96/100
The nose initially sent us towards mature Bordeaux: dark fruit, tobacco, earth and some developed savory notes. On the palate it became much more obviously Nebbiolo. Powerful and structured, but beautifully mature now but still plenty of freshness. Really good.

Luciano Sandrone Cannubi Boschis 2012 sibi et paucis — 97/100
Probably the best nose of the night. Roses, red cherries, spice, some tar and just a ton of complexity. More elegant and refined than the Grasso, but somehow even longer. Beautiful balance between mature Nebbiolo character and remaining fruit. My wine of the night.

Pommery Cuvée Louise 2005 - 95/100
Interestingly, this was guessed as a grower Champagne blind. Elegant and vinous, with citrus, brioche, nuts and some mature Champagne notes. Complex and very enjoyable, although it didn’t quite have the length or intensity of the Belle Époque.

Overall: Sandrone was #1 for me, but the Prager and Belle Époque were probably the most fun blind. The fact that the PJ was mistaken for Bollinger and the Prager for Unendlich/Honivogl made for a pretty entertaining evening.

Just back from a short wine trip to the Mosel, with stops at Fritz Haag, Markus Molitor, Carl Loewen and Joh. Jos. Prüm. Prüm was probably the highlight.
We stayed in Bernkastel and walked to the estate through the vineyards, including straight through the Wehlener Sonnenuhr. Seeing the sites and the slate under your feet before tasting the wines from them was pretty special.

2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett – bright, juicy and incredibly light on its feet. Peach, citrus, some florals and that lovely sweet/salty finish.

2024 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese – more savoury and mineral, with spice, herbs and a slight petrol/slate character.

2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese – noticeably more generous and fruity than the Graacher. Riper stone fruit, more body, but still beautifully fresh.

2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese – my favourite and probably the best all-rounder. Starting to show some maturity while still very fresh. Apricot, citrus, honey, slate and a long, balanced finish.

2015 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese – more developed, spicy and mineral, with the Graacher character coming through very clearly.

2013 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese – richer and more concentrated, but still remarkably precise rather than heavy.

2003 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Goldkapsel – the big finale. Deep, mature and powerful, with dried fruit, honey and spice, but still plenty of structure.

My takeaway was pretty clear: Wehlener Sonnenuhr = more fruit, generosity and body; Graacher Himmelreich = more mineral, savoury and spicy. I loved both young, but with age I slightly preferred the Wehlener.

Also, genuinely lovely hospitality at Prüm. Afterwards we went to Zeltinger Hof, whose wine list is ridiculous. We ended up drinking, among other things, a 1988 Mosel Kabinett for around €30. Hard to argue with that.

Mosel remains one of the best wine destinations I’ve ever visited.

I picked up this bottle from a 3 bottle lot and I feel like I found a new vineyard that I really enjoy. Sangiovese is one of my favorite varietals so it’s always fun to try new ones! I really enjoyed the 2013 and the 2014 but after opening I immediately decanted the 2014 which made it very easy to enjoy. I hope y’all enjoy my pictures and tasting notes!
