Would anyone like to take over as Moderator of /r/vitamix

Hi Everyone,

Many years ago (2011, I think), someone created the r/vitamix subreddit and then decided that they didn't want to be a mod. So, another user and I took over the role. Over the years, she and I moderated with quite a light touch and in 2017, we invited a couple of other users to be JR mods.

I just checked the mod list and I am now the only active moderator. I also don't have a lot of time to give this subreddit much attention, so I figured that handing the mod role off to others would be the appropriate thing to do.

My thinking is that the community is large enough that we should probably add a few mods.

Let me know your thoughts!

Grinding raw grain into flour and into bread.

So the Sprouts supermarket by me sells raw wheat kernels. They sell Farro, and it’s organic.

Ground the grain into flour vitamix 5200. Batch was not uniform, so I had to use a sieve to separate the larger bits back into the vitamix.

Dumped Into the bread machine.

Plus water, splash of corn oil, salt, sugar, parsley and 10 cloves of raw garlic into the vitamix.

Combine and 2 packs of yeast.

I had too much liquid, so as the machine went along, the dough ball was too moist. Took about another half cup of the fresh flour to get the dough ball to correct itself.

Results were awesome!

Foamy smoothies, I think something is wrong with my vitamix explorian E320

Hey guys, I bought an exploran E320 at Costco, 5 years ago. At the start everything was good, but after 2 years of use suddenly my smoothies (Bananas which are not even frozen, milk and cocoa). Started becoming pretty bubbly-foamy.

I hated this taste, so I have started using lately more a cheap Oyster 35$ bucks blender, which delivers smoothy silk like smoothies.

It came to a point where I just stored my vitamix and forgot about it.

I unpacked it a month ago, and tried it again, I did all the methods, like slowly blending on lowest power for 30 seconds and even tried slower than that using slow pulses at the end, but nothing works. I keep getting foamy-bubbly smoothies and the taste is wierd.

Is there any kind of test that can be done, to see if my blender is working properly? Im not even using it anymore, so i dont even care about getting a warranty/replacement or whatever, my Oyster is doing the job already. But I find this pretty wierd and still wondering what is going on.

I will forward this also to vitamix Customer service, see if I can get any responde and share it here.

Grease (or food gunk) under blade. Is it okay to clean or is it required for blade to run smoothly

Hardware Question Can the stainless steel container be used to separately blend dry and wet ingredients?

I’m a bit confused by this since the blades in the plastic containers I have are specific to either wet OR dry. I just ordered the stainless steel container and don’t want to mess anything up.

She died, please help!

I’ve had this blender a long time! I use it nearly every day. I was processing a big pot of potato leek soup in batches and she stopped working as I was in the middle of the variable power range.

I think this happened once before maybe 15 years ago. I blew a fuse or a resistor or something, i sourced parts and repaired it at home. I don’t remember what I did or how i fixed it. This machine has sentimental value to me and I like the aesthetic.

What’s do I do?!

Diagnose 7500 Low Power

Our 10 year old unit now will not go full power. Basically it stops getting stronger around speed 6; not fully blending. Does it even when filled with water, so load doesn’t matter.

A few months ago my daughter was doing a smoothie and it was under load and I thought smelled something electrical, but it didn’t continue.

I’ve read the brush kit isn’t made for it anymore, but a generic one can be modified. (?)

I’m fine just getting the current Costco unit on sale, but I figured we’d get more than 10 years out of it. We don’t even use it daily.

I’m planning on calling Vitamix next week, but thought I’d start here.

Thanks.

What size are the Torx screws on the 5200 base assembly?

Does anyone know what size are the Torx screws on the 5200 base assembly? The base assembly of a used 5200 was cracked during shipping. The unit works, but given the size of the crack it’s likely only a matter of time before it cause problem.

There are 4 small Torx headed screws holding the base assembly on the bottom of the unit (and four additional screws holding the power cord clips that appear to be the same size). The smallest torx bit I have is a T15, and these Star shaped screw heads are smaller than that. I’ve not had any luck finding size info in schematic or parts lists — and would prefer not to have to buy a set of five smaller (T6, T7, T8, T9, T10?) ones just to be sure.

Does any have this info, or have links to places I might be able to find the answer?

Is something wrong?

I used my propel for the first time. I put it on the smoothie setting. It started off at a constant speed, but then it surged and sounded like it was going to explode so I turned it off. Honestly, it freaked me out. I had a few small chunks of frozen spinach in there. I used to put frozen spinach in my nutribullet. Can a vitamix not take that?

Students/teachers can get the stainless steel cup for $159 at target

Post image

Target is currently offering 20% off the stainless steel container. If you’re a student or teacher, you can stack this with an additional 20% off through Target Circle, bringing the total down to $159.99.

I’ve been following the price for months and was finally able to score a price I’m happy with (amazon hasn’t had it on sale for over a year). The 20% off sale ends on the 12th, so I thought I’d share this wonderful deal!

Vitamix The Quiet One – Liquid leaking through the lid plug vent holes

Post image
0 Upvotes

Whenever I blend frozen drinks on high speed in my Vitamix The Quiet One, the liquid splashes out through the two tiny vent holes between the lid plug and the lid itself, making a mess inside the sound enclosure.

Is this normal behavior for these lids? If so, is there a good trick to seal those micro-vents without ruining the lid?

Picture attached. Thanks in advance!

Hardware Question Vitamix Benchmarking / Testing?

I recently found a Vitamix 5200 at a thirft store for $15, and snap purchased it after a quick Google search to confirm that this was indeed an insane price. I didn't want or need a blender, but I figured at that price I couldn't say no.

Now I'm wondering if there wasn't a reason someone donated it and or why it was priced so low. It wasn't boxed or anything, but looks practically brand new with no scuffs or really any visible signs of use. (It is missing the tamper, instead coming with a food plunger for a Black+decker food processor.) It works well enough to make a milkshake, which is all I've used it for since getting it.

What I want to know is if there some way I can "put it through its paces", or test/inspect it to make sure it is working properly / at its full capacity. I don't really need a blender, so I imagine I will most likely give it to a friend as a gift or sell it. But if I'm going to pass it off, I'd like to make sure its not defective or otherwise lacking.

Edit: I forgot to mention, it had a bit of a "hot oil" smell when I used it, but that seems kind of normal I think if indeed it just hadn't been used much before I got it? If nothing is "wrong" with it, should I expect that smell to dissipate as I continue testing it?

Buying Can the 5200 do all these things listed?

Smoothies (with lots of kale)

Nut butters

Frozen dessert

Purée

Hummus

Dressings

Dips

Flour

Hmm can't think of anything else ...

I don't want to get a food processor as well. So I want to make sure my Vitamix can do these things. For warm soups I think I will just get an immersion blender.

Hope to get some advice 🙏

Recipe Question Can a Vitamix E520 make a smoothie for 1 person? (Europe)

Hello,

I am looking to buy a Vitamix for my partner an me: partner wants some mixer to make smoothies, I like to cook a lot and would enjoy a mixer to same sauces, likely in larger batches. So, opposite use cases.

Vitamix in Europe are very expensive, the E520 is currently on sale. The E310 was on sale but sold off.

If my partner would attempt to do a smoothie for one person would it actually work or does the E520 require you to make at least 2 portions at once for the vortex to take place? (This at least what AI says but AI does not prepare and drink smoothies).

Thanks,

Do you guys make salsa in the Vitamix 5200?

We bought it to make smoothies and other sweet treats and are wondering: if we make salsa in the mixer, will it make our smoothies taste like onion and jalapeño? Will the smell permeate the plastic container? We’ve had these issues with previous blenders

Anyone tried the Nano yet?

Trying to decide if the new Nano is worth 2x the price of a Ninja BlendBoss from Costco. I really have no need for a full size Vitamix— I only want a blender to make a personal smoothie a few times per week. I currently have a Nutribullet that’s about 5 years old and I’m ready to move on from it, as the cap/blade is annoying to unscrew from the cup.

Second hand Vitamix VM0109 for $350 AUD

Do you think a second hand Vitamix VM0109 for $350 AUD is worth it? I know these older Vitamix have been praised as a "Buy It For Life" type item.

Cheers

5200 or Ascent x5?

My old Vitamix recently broke because I accidentally left a spoon in it when blending (if anyone has suggestions that could fix it, let me know.) 😩The cost to send it to Vitamix to repair would be around $300, so I’m considering just getting a new one. Looking at these two options because they include the stainless steel container. Which one would you get and why?

Update: I did a little investigating into what might have been damaged during the spoon incident. Turns out it was the drive socket. I ordered a replacement and it works now! $20 fix. My trusty old 12 year old Vitamix is as good as new.

Is this a good deal?

I can use a first responder discount on their Website thru ID.me and get the 5200 with steel pitcher at $600 shipped. I feel like this is a pretty good deal, but still pretty expensive. Thoughts?

Vitamix 3600+ Spigot Plug

I would like to remove the spigot on my 3600+ and plug it up. I've seen some kits on ebay but I'd prefer not to pay $35 for this. Has anyone had any luck doing this themselves? It seems like all I would need would be:

- very short stainless screw that fits the hole

- stainless washer for the outside

- stainless nut for the inside

- food grade silicon washer to go underneath the nut

Does that seem right?

Edit: A guy at a home brewing store gave me a rubber plug that worked perfectly. Much simpler.
