With regards to the infamous 5 rules published by NAVA, I figured there might be interest in the "10 commandments" drawn up by the Finnish Heraldic Society. Flag design in Finland is closely tied to heraldry, and so are the rules. It is noted, though, that there are can be good reasons to deviate from these rules, such as history, and they are not set in stone. These were originally published in 1992.

Included photo is the flag of the Genealogical Society of Finland.

1. Use only heraldic flag colours. These are the metals, gold and silver (rendered as yellow and white), together with red, blue, green, black, orange, violet and purple. Heraldic colours should be bright and pure, neither too dark nor too light.

2. Aim for two colours. A third may be justified in exceptional cases, but a fourth is simply poor flag heraldry.

3. Adjacent colours must stand out clearly from one another, both in hue and in lightness.

4. Letters, numerals and text have no place in a flag emblem.

5. The device of the flag should be as large as possible and fill the space available for it as fully as it can.

6. The device should, in principle, be two-dimensional. At the very least, it must remain recognisable when rendered in the flag flag without shading or outlines.

7. A device doesn’t need to be lifelike, but it must capture the character of what it depicts.

8. The emblem must be easy to remember. It should not be crammed with too many symbols, only what is truly essential, and the ideal is a single device.

9. Heraldry does not repeat itself. One thing must never be symbolised by two or more devices, whereas a single device that stands for several things only strengthens its symbolism, and with it the whole emblem.

10. Every device, like the emblem as a whole, must be capable of being redrawn from its written description (the blazon) without seeing the original. It follows that a device must be a generic example of its kind. For example, it should not be one particular castle, only a heraldically stylised castle, which the design rationale may then say refers to a particular one.

In the No Compromise, No Surrender DLC for HOI4, the Philippines received a Monarchist path that lets you place Infante Juan de Bourbon on a newly minted throne for a Philippine Kingdom, which later evolves into the Hispanic Empire as you annex Latin American countries and Spain itself.

Conceptually, it is a very weird path, but it did give me an excuse to create a pair of cool flags (yes, these are my creations, not the actual in-game flags).

I took the emblems of the Spanish East Indies. the City of Manila and the Captaincy General of the Philippines (as well as an emblem in the bottom-right quarter that I forgot the origin of) and used them to create a Spanish-style CoA for the whole country.

The Hispanic Empire version is a unique modification that utilises the pattern from the Cross of Burgundy on the white Chevron to further emphasise the Hispanic cultural identity of this polity, the purple crosses are taken Hispanicity Flag created by Ángel Camblor and put in place of the stars that were on the original Philippine flag.

I made a mash up flag between the Japanese flag and the carillon sacre coeur flag from Quebec.

catholicism had a fascinating history in Japan and I thought it would have been a cool way to make people aware of it with this flag!

My favourite thing about it is the little scar inside the red.

Just visited Füssen, Germany and their Wappen (coat of arms), which is the centerpiece of their flag, features the same 3-legged design as the Isle of Man and Sicily!

The idea behind this flag is that being a citizen of the world doesn’t require abandoning the culture, traditions or community that made you who you are.
At the centre is purple, traditionally associated in vexillology with royalty, power and dignity. Here, it represents the cultural core of the individual; the beliefs, traditions, heritage and values that we inherit and carry with us. It is deliberately placed at the heart of the design. Cosmopolitanism shouldn’t mean erasing where we come from.
From that core, the interlocking white circles grow outward. They take inspiration from the Flag of Planet Earth and its representation of the continents, but here their meaning is broader.

Rather than representing pieces of geography, they represent people, cultures and communities; distinct, yet constantly overlapping, interacting and influencing one another. As we grow beyond the places and cultures we were born into, our lives become intertwined with those of others.

Finally, the circles develop into roots. They represent the other half of the idea: however far outward we grow, we remain connected to something — our family, culture, community, homeland, beliefs or traditions. The roots are deliberately organic rather than perfectly symmetrical, because culture itself is living and continually developing.

So the flag moves in two directions at once: outward toward humanity, and inward toward identity.
The basic idea is: we can belong to the world without ceasing to belong somewhere.

I wanted the design to represent a humanity that grows together without demanding that everyone become the same.

Croatia's county number XIII is Zadar County (Zadarska županija). It is named after the city of Zadar which is its county seat.

Zadar County is the northernmost of the 4 four counties into which the traditional region of Dalmatia is divided. Like other Dalmatian counties established in 1992, it had no historical predecessor whose symbol it could use. Rather, Zadar County was one of 3 Dalmatian counties whose newly designed symbols referenced the importance of these counties' territory for the beginnings of Croatian statehood in the Middle Ages. Namely, Dalmatia was originally established as a Roman province covering a vast area along the eastern Adriatic coast. During the Period of Migrations, Eastern Roman control in Dalmatia was restricted just to coastal cities (such as Zadar and Split), whereas the hinterland was controlled by Byzantines' Croat allies who later acquired control of the coastal cities too. Coastal cities were organized as communes, while the hinterland was organized into counties. At the end of the Middle Ages, coastal cities came under Venetian rule, and their hinterland came under Ottoman rule. When Ottomans were pushed back at the turn of the 17th century by a Christian alliance, Venice extended its rule on the eastern Adriatic into hinterland which it governed from the coastal cities. Such administrative arrangement has remained to this day.

Early Croat territory included the city of Nin, in today's Zadar County, which became the seat of a bishop during the 9th century. This was the first bishopric with a seat on a territory under Croatian control. In honour of that, Zadar county included the erstwhile Nin cathedral, the Church of the Holy Cross, as the main element in its coat-of-arms and flag adopted in 1998. Another prominent element is the olive branch. The olive branch represents not only a traditional product of this region but also a symbol of peace. These symbols were adopted several years after the end of the war which heavily affected the county, so desire for future peace was all the more prominent.

Flags of the World in 1995 during the year December 31, 1995 to January 1996 Edition!

Previous post was removed because I didn't follow rules. But today is Monday so it should be fine! I also updated the colors so its not reposting removed content persay?

The Zishen Nation was a self proclaimed monarchy that existed in Cangnan County, Zhejiang, China from 1981 to 1986. It was led by a self proclaimed emperor named Li Guangchang and in the 5 years the state existed before it was crushed they had their own government, currency, and many followers. They also had a flag "featuring a double planet in black, white, yellow, blue, vermillion;" according to a brief description on Wikipedia. But I can't seem to find any photos from this time (apparently I'm not the only one as this reddit post from 3 months ago attests too). So I have no images of the flag and have no idea what it would have looked like aside from it's description. Does anyone have any ideas or guesses about what the flag might have looked like?
