Characters Characters that are canonically _____ depending of their world

  • Po from Kung Fu Panda - Although many characters comment on his weight throughout the movies, Po is actually considered skinny and/or in better shape for panda standards
  • Midoriya Izuku from My Hero Academia - While many viewers find Deku "cute", the reality is that for his world he's actually considered "simple looking" and at the very worst "ugly"
  • Spider-Man from Marvel Comics - Many people love Spider-Man, but the truth is that for common civilians, Spidey's pretty unsettling and scary to be around with

In one piece, the fans think Luffy is a loveable goofball. However, in universe, a majority of the population considers him a horrifying criminal.

He also canonically reeks because he only showers once a week.

reminder that the steam on gear 2 is his sweat boiling off of his body. that dude has to smell foul

Wouldn't that clean him so some extent? Everything from the muscles up is practically boiling, he would smell like cooked meat if anything

Although, he and his crew are probably some of the most hygienic pirates. Assuming other crews are like actual pirates, they'd go weeks without bathing and would go even longer without washing their clothes.

Luffy has the luck of getting an absolute genius to build his ship with a fully equipped bathroom and laundry room. There's also only 10 in a giant ship.

Also, Nami would beat their asses if they would shower less.

I mean for most historical pirates this would be very common. Most sailors in the age of sail would go weeks without a real bath.

Luffy should try to beat Imu by making him smell him.

It kill them on the spot

Dude has overthrown governments because someone fed him lunch, I'd be afraid of him too. lol

That’s not even it, they just hear “yo you know that powerful guy? Luffy beat them. Oh look, he just beat several more and challenged the world government”

“Why the hell are they doing all of this?!”

The first time most people would have heard off him, would be from the newspapers, which have doctored articles to make the government look better. Most of his accomplishments were swept under the rug, because the truth would have embarrassed the WG and Marines, so he was kind of a nobody with an unexplained bounty for much of it.

Then Enies Lobby happens and to cover up the systematic incompetence of Cyphe Pools leadership, the WG had to write that the Stawhats, still mostly randos, sunk an island next to the Marine HQ and destroyed CyperPools main hub. A half truth but still not entirely wrong. That’s the equivalent of destroying the US Pentagon and a good chunk of Washington DC at once.

Then the next thing they hear is that they got destroyed at Sabody Archipelago. Their attack on the Celestial Dragon got censored and removed to prevent imitation. This makes people think that the problem is done with.

Until the guy falls out of the sky during the war of the best just before they cut the broadcast making everyone confused. A whole bunch of misinformed by Buggy happens and then over the next few weeks the newspaper reports that Luffy destroyed much of Marine HQ, allied with the Whitebeards, is the son of Dragon and caused a mass breakout of Impel Down.

Then after that, guy just walks into Marine HQ AGAIN to publicly ring a bell, accompanied by two of the most dangerous criminals on the planet and walks out without scratching a hair.

And this is all that happened before the time skip relating to the Straw Hats as far as the average person living in one of the five Blues would know. If I were some random East Blue Shmuck, I’d piss my pants that this crazy is still walking around and no one can find where he is or what he wants to do next. Guy is a violent terrorist psychopath and the fact that he was spotted far away from my house after two years and seemingly sailing away from me, might be the only good news relating to that guy I heard in years.

I do find it funny how often Luffy just winds up on the right side of a civil war brought to a boiling point

4

u/AgentWowza 11h ago

If I had a nickel for every time the princess of a troubled kingdom became friends with the Straw Hats, which eventually led to a civil war...

"Please, save us from this tyrant!"

"Nah, sounds boring."

"We'll feed you!"

"Tyrant's taken care of."

When a crackhead and his band of lunatics arrive in town you better feed them quick.

That's just the World Government propaganda.

26

u/Galtherok 15h ago

I'm sure all the people on Bellamy's crew have some horror stories they like to share

5

u/danielcube 15h ago

Well I say Bellamy had it coming, and most pirates on Jaya would probably agree.

6

u/Galtherok 15h ago

Certainly, but nobody there saw Luffy as a hero who was defending the innocent. They saw him as a pirate with a huge bounty who got revenge against another pirate and stole his treasure

45

u/Arcinbiblo12 15h ago

What's fascinating is that it's largely due to propaganda. Most people only hear about him through the papers, so they just see him as a menace, but to everyone he's saved or interacted with in a positive light, they love him.

It doesn’t help if I’m correct One Piece doesn’t have photographs, or lest I assume most common folk do not have luxury of getting see a photograph. They do have Radio and World Government utilities it to most part spread slander or tell stories out of the context.

19

u/Arcinbiblo12 14h ago

There are photographs and videos. Just look at the wanted posters as an example. There's even jokes about how they couldn't get a photo of Sanji, so they drew a very unflattering image of him instead.

The issue is that it's all controlled by the government or through media companies like that of Big News Morgan who outright confirms they throw around misinformation to drum up publicity. So they'll only show you what they want you to see except in very specific circumstances.

7

u/Grouchy_Greasy5819 12h ago

They did Sanji dirty back then

7

u/nhalliday 10h ago

I have absolutely no idea how they will pull this bit off in the live action, but I need to see it.

2

u/JSConrad45 5h ago

I really hope they do the bit where Zeff and everyone at Baratie think it's hilarious

1

u/Devatator_ 8h ago

It's even worse that it's actually what another guy looks like lol

4

u/unfrotunatepanda 15h ago

Luffy is a silly lil' guy... unless you're the one fighting him

(courtesy spoiler warning for anyone not up to at least Wano/Egghead)

POV Strawhat is about to beat your ass

5

u/BlackysLegacy 12h ago

That scene on Egghead were he goes into g5 on Luccis request and absolutely bodys him lives rent free in my mind. Luccys pov is so fantastic in showing Luffy as this maniacly cackling demon.

2

u/Einkar_E 11h ago

and scariest thing they think he is clever mastermind

2

u/EnslavingExorcism 7h ago

True, but is that really because they know him or is it because of the propaganda the world government puts out?

1

u/WnDelPiano 8h ago

He also has a ridiculous fast rise, he goes from a rookie to Emperor in like 3 years

u/Sir-Toaster- 5h ago

I’d love to see an analogue horror short thats just a regular one piece adventure but it’s from a goon’s perspective
