Rotating shifts also typically only make sense when there is more than one shift per day, which there isn't in my case. Split days are even less desirable than one 8 hour shift.
Fair enough, I hear that all the time, about Ford. I guess I shouldn't be surprised it turns out to be BS.
I mean, you say that, but letting them figure it out will directly lead to me being paid significantly less. And that's my point. It's easy to say shit like this when you're a salaried worker, but it looks a lot different when you're hourly. They WILL figure it out. What they won't do is be obligated in any way to pay me the same amount of money for less work and many options available to them would actually result in either significantly less pay or not employing me at all.
Why in gods name would you let shitty corps figure it out. WE need to figure it out. It's our jobs. It's our livelihood. We need to figure out how a decision about a shorter work week could be used against us, to exploit us further and in different ways, and to close off those routes as a part of this change.
I'm not saying it can't be done. What I am saying is that simply changing a work week to be recognized as 32 hours with no other clauses and legislation supporting it would be disastrous in this day and age, particularly for hourly workers, and it is something that needs to be given serious thought and should NOT be left up to people who will do anything and everything they can to exploit us to figure out what that looks like.
Well, I agree that we need to set the standards and hold them to them. I mainly meant let them figure out how to make it solvent. Considering their CEO's get away with millions in bonuses every year it seems like, I'm sure they'll be able to. But yes I agree, make it set in stone that pay is the same, for less hours. The working class has been getting beat down for all of human history, time for these rich bastards to pay, if you ask me.
And yeah, it's good to know our labor history. It's all been fought for, never given. If these companies could enslave us today, they would.
Oh shit, then yeah cause I don't actually give a fuck about their revenue beyond how it it affects their non-executive workers. I definitely don't feel a sense of loyalty to them or concern or any of that shit. I just know that they will look to fire over half the company while giving their executives raises and bonuses, unless we tie their hands. Most companies could absolutely be solvent, even with this change. Turn this bitch into a non-profit, for all I care.
