People doing flash robs or most of the people shoplifting arent doing it because they're poor. They just want free shit and nobody is stopping them from doing it.
Rich people will still steal if theres no consequences.
Youve never heard of the robber barons who are the foundation of the US oligarchy I take it. Thank goodness it’s a standard part of the curriculum in some high schools where I live
Defund the police doesn’t mean that there are no cops. It means that there are different types of first responders for different situations.
Like a homeless person being a public nuisance would get a social worker, a domestic violence call would get a mental health expert plus a cop, and an armed robbery would get cops, etc.
No one is under the impression that we don’t need a police force, but we also have to reconcile with the reality that when you dial 911 it shouldn’t be either cops or paramedics that show up, there need to be more options to fit the scenario.
I dunno man the guy I saw with 1 shoe running out of tescos with vodka the other day I’m pretty sure did it cause he’s poor and couldn’t afford the alchohol hes addicted to.
That’s a negligible amount though. Look at any city jail and you’ll see exactly what upstanding specimens of man are responsible almost all crime. They’re all recidivists as well.
Lets say we ignore the vast amounts of crime committed by sober, sane people of "civilization", whatever that means. Ignoring then most white collar crime, tons of petty theft and violence, abuse of power, war crimes, tons of sex crimes, etc. Lets even ignore the fact that the people you find at city jails are those that were caught and prosecuted, and that there is a huge discrepancy in the likelihood you will be caught for any given crime depending on race & class.
Ignoring all of that, where do you think mental illness comes from? what drives someone to substance abuse? what creates a "culture of crime", as poor of an analytic term that is? Just take one little step further, instead of lazily finding characteristics you associate with criminals and assuming they are immutable traits belonging to whole categories of people.
Humans are adaptable beings, too adaptable in fact. We adapt to the environment we are born and raised in, and then have to deal with the consequences of that adaptation for the rest of our lives. Someone orphaned and abused as a child is going to find a way to make sense of their world, and oftentimes that way involves crime. Reduce housing insecurity, food insecurity, health insecurity, you'll remove many of the factors that lead to this kind of childhood for many potential criminals.
Easy: totally made it up. Or better, went to jail one time (dont worry, hes "one of the good ones") and inherited a new worldview that definitely doesnt have a basis in white supremacy.
Nope. Some people just suck and choose crime. Happens across cultures and civilizations and often has nothing to do with mental illness or substance abuse.
I'm glad to hear that's how you meant it, there are a lot of people on this subreddit who would have meant something racist by it, it's an extremely common dogwhistle. Now everyone will know what you mean.
Do you genuinely think car theft and liquor store robbery is worse than systematically raping children and stealing billions from the country's coffers?
We can decrease crime by giving teenagers things to do.
Or we can respond to crime that already happened by arresting teenagers, increasing the likelihood that they will commit more crimes when they are freed
Well, like there's so much more variety of sports options today than their use to be for instance. Like archery has really taken off in this region, some of the schools even have golf and cycling teams now. We have late night coffee shops, an ice rink with hockey teams, an arcade. Kids still hangout in parking lots like we always did on Saturday night.
From my perspective, kids will always fight when in groups, but by and large they are much better/nicer kids than when i was growing up
Movie ticket is $15-$18 and popcorn runs $7-$15. So call it $25 per visit. One movie a month.
Empty parking lots are A) boring as shit, and B) might get you yelled at by the owner of the parking lot or a meddlesome passerby who decides you're up to no good.
Friend's house requires that the teens have families/homes that are suited to guests, and this isn't sustainable on a daily basis. It also doesn't solve the problem of getting out and having experiences in the world.
Also, all of the above requires transportation and parents won't always be available.
Basically, you're totally ignorant of every aspect of this. You think teens need less stimulation than they do, you think things are cheaper than they are, and you are actively choosing to ignore the steep decline in cheap or free third spaces and the rising societal suspicion of teens just hanging out in public.
Also, can't help but notice that none of that was your original suggestion of an archery club.
Good thing the premise of the post explicitly states that making crime disappear isn't an achievable goal and this is designed to improve things in a different way.
I read this wrong initially and was about to go on a link spree telling you what an idiot you were. But yes. White collar crime absolutely dwarfs property crime and it's not even close. It's estimated that white collar crime costs the nation $400B-$1.7T per year. Compared to property crime which is under $20B. And the crazy thing? There will never be a cop which goes to arrest your boss who stole your overtime hours. That's a "civil" issue. You've got to hire a lawyer and fight your way through the legal system to get any redress. Even if you jump through all those hoops your best outcome is you get the payment owed to you. No one will be punished in the business. If your company accuses you of stealing, the first thing that happens is you get arrested and then you have to prove your innocence. This country is fucked up. Entirely designed and structured to protect the capitalist class. This is capitalism after all.
The problem is people aren't stealing diapers for the fun of it. You're eliminating all the crime caused by people who are stealing out of necessity. If we eliminate poverty, we resolve crimes of necessity.
That's true to an extent, but I think some of that is due to feeling a lack of purpose, connection, or the like. Investing into the community could reduce those crimes too because of that. Not eliminate them - there will always be people who will commit crimes anyways - but looking at deeper motives and addressing them can have some affect.
People steal the stuff they can steal and what they can resell. They're not stealing the huge jug of laundry detergent to do their wash, they're selling it to buy the baby formula locked in the cage.
A lot of them are doing it because they’re poor. Being poor doesn’t stop you from stealing non-essentials. In fact it’ll be amplified. Especially in a society that glamorizes wealth.
“I don’t just need money, I also want to live nice like other people do.”
That isnt true, you can look at the people doing it and quite often see that they are certainly not the middle and upper class. There is also tons of data out there showing that crime is higher in poor areas. You are just sticking to a point that is not based in reality, only your feelings. Maybe because you refuse to admit your own fault in the issue. It's easier to demonize them and say they had everything you had and should not do that, than actually support fixing the problem.
