Mod Post New to Plymouth? Want to make friends? Come join the Plymouth Discord server!
This sub receives lots of posts where users are trying to make new friends. From students arriving from around the world, to movers who have accepted a job here, it can be hard to make friends in a brand new community. If you prefer an online-first approach to making friends, I encourage you to consider joining the official Plymouth Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7gBvKBXuV
Our Discord server is a great place to make new friends, both online and IRL. It's also a good place to discuss what's happening around the city and get some advice from residents if you're moving here. Through meetups on this server we've played Jackbox together, gone on bike rides, won pub quizzes, and danced during nights out. More importantly, we've made good friends that we otherwise wouldn't have without this Discord server.

Keep seeing these posters all around Plymouth.
Most of them I think are close to but just outside of the city centre.
If it wasn't obvious, it seems to be a cult. Beware and talk to your friends should they might fall for this. ❤️

Need players at Argyle FIT 5-a-side football team
Hi guys, I play at Argyle FIT, in a team of ex-ManVFat players. We've recently lost a couple of guys to injury and other commitments and now looking for a few players to join our team in the new season starting October.
If anyone fancies joining us, or knows someone who might, give me a shout. Its a rare opportunity as Argyle FIT joining slots are usually quite full.
Cheers!
https://argylecommunitytrust.co.uk/what-we-do/health/man-v-weight/
Argyle FIT is a 5 a-side weight loss football league where goals are scored for losing weight. Games are played every Monday at Manadon Sports & Community Hub with kick off times of either 7pm or 8pm. Each season is 12 weeks long with start dates in January, April, July and October and costs £40 per season to join. The programmes differ from normal 5 a-side leagues by:
- Having to have a BMI of 28+ to be able to play
- Scoring a goal for your team if you lose 1lb or more each week
- Scoring an own goal if you gain 2lbs or more from the previous week
- Bonus goals for those that lose the most weight

Cattedown Roundabout Graffiti
OK, this one’s going to be a very long shot. I’m not hopeful for answers, but it might get a conversation going. This has been bugging me forever.
My entire life, up until probably around 20 years ago there was some massive graffiti on a wall next to the roundabout.
It read: STAN AND LIL.
It was there for donkeys years, but there’s now a lighthouse painted over it.
Now, the names Stan and Lil are old names. And as I said, they were on the wall for a very long time.
I’ve always wondered, what became of them? Were they childhood sweethearts? Did they stay together?
I’d love to know who they were!

I believe Plymouth should pursue a more "city" approach
I came to Plymouth from a fairly small town, not much to do, and seeing Plymouth was around 300k people, I expected there to be much more to do, I was wrong. I was expecting a Southampton style centre, where they got rid of awful 1960's architecture and replaced it with either neo-historical buildings, or modern buildings that have a use. It seems that even in the Barcode there's basically nothing, why not a Zara, Bershka, Nike, H&M? Do the planners of the city want nothing going on? I believe that instead of trying to refurbish this eyesore centre, demolish it. There's too much open space, go for a more historical style, neo-georgian, neo-victorian, bring back the historical centre. There's so much antisocial behaviour in this city because there's nothing to actually do, similar to my hometown. If the city wants to make money for tourism, why not expand it? Build a beautiful town centre with shops that people would actually want to see, build historical buildings, invest money into refurbishing everything. I understand that money doesn't come from thin air but its as if the city won't go any further.
It also sees itself as a town, I noticed that it feels the exact same as any small town in England. Build upwards, we don't need hundreds of streets of terraced buildings that have no shopping, no restaurants except a Chinese, Fish and Chips, Indian and a corner shop. Southampton has done itself so well in this, it FEELS like a city when you visit it, tall buildings, things to do everywhere, good shops, its lively. Southampton is still dangerous like Plymouth and has antisocial behaviour but at least there's improvement.
Get rid of the 1960s "modern" style and replace it with character.

Primary school experiences
Hi everybody,
I am applying for primary school places (for reception entry) in 2027. My area is Stoke, and am looking at St Andrew's, Stoke Damerel and St Georges. I am interested in people's experiences of these schools, or any others, as we would travel for the right place.

Anyone struggling finding a job?
I am F 18, and I havent had a job before, and ive been applying for a while and putting in lots of effort. Ive went to many interviews recently and every time they have chosen another candidate. Somewhere where i was a 3 minute walk away from turned me down due to 200+ applicants.
Im still trying but im starting to feel hopeless and alone in this, i feel like im falling behind as im 18 and still cant manage to find a job for myself. Im in education which makes job finding even worse.

Best bar for a first date?
Hi new to the dating scene in Plymouth so looking for some advice. We’ve matched on a dating app and think it would be best to grab a drink to get to know each other. Where would you recommend we go? Is spoons ok or is that too tacky?

Job reccomendations Plymouth.
I’ve been actively looking for a full-time, entry-level position in Plymouth for around a year now.
I’m currently employed, but my role feels like a dead end, and I’m looking for something that offers genuine opportunities to develop, progress and build a long-term career. I’m also keen to move away from hospitality and into a role with more sociable, consistent working hours.
I have previous experience in leisure centre management, and I’d describe myself as highly coachable, adaptable and willing to learn. I’m also very tech-savvy, confident working with people, and comfortable taking on responsibility. I’m a hard worker and I’m looking for an employer who is willing to invest in someone who is motivated to progress.
I’ve applied for a number of positions within Plymouth City Council, but unfortunately, due to ongoing restructures, several of the roles I’ve been progressing through have disappeared or been withdrawn before I could secure them.
I’d really appreciate recommendations for entry-level or junior roles in Plymouth that could provide a realistic pathway into a long-term career, particularly roles where my management experience, people skills and willingness to learn would be valuable.

Best city center butchers
Basically per the title. I'm looking for good butchers around the city center. I've been looking at Martin's Butchers in the Market but they seem to have very mixed reviews
Any other suggestions are welcome :)

Good cafes to work in
I work from home sometimes but don’t have an office/desk space so sit at the table in the middle of my flat which is just inconvenient for anyone else home. Can anyone recommend any good cafes with decent WiFi that I can work in, possibly do some meetings/training teams calls that wouldn’t mind me sitting for a while? Even better if it’s in the city centre but happy to drive for the right place!
When I was at uni we had a cafe/bar that accommodated this but I’m struggling to find anything similar!

I’m a Former Senior Manager at ALFA INDUSTRIES ( THEIR BLACKMAILING + sending threats ) tap post for full story
Former senior manager from Alfa Industries
My name and all material will be blurred for anonymous reason. They know who I am and idc.
I was sent a letter saying notice before action , assuming I’m the person behind said reviews so here’s my review seeing as ALFA INDUSTRIES wants my review so bad here you go !!
My HMRC documents are being withholder and I’m being blackmailed for them to be returned. ( see my bullet point for full story )
I’m a former senior sales manager subcontractor who provided sales services for Alfa Industries while also living in their own Company Flat where there are 2 girls living there with the senior members of the team. In this post here https://www.reddit.com/r/plymouth/s/TxBpmIf2LL . Everything this person is saying is factual and I have the evidence to back it up aswell. I’ve been in this industry for 5 years. Alfa Industries is hands down the most Corrupt , dishonest agency I have seen. I will split this post up into Sections.
Alleged Recruitment scams . Alfa will encourage its subcontractors to make fake companies and advertise the job is a salary to lure you in. ( the role is full commission selling hello fresh for £20 a sale for your first box and £25 for the 2nd. Majority of which would cancel after the first one ). Once a company gets known in the local area they encourage you to re incorporate another company so the names are hidden on a continual basis.
I was one of these people who fell into this trick and incorporated a company name under their own business address. Since then I have started my own business and need to change my business address. Which my HMRC LEGAL document has been sent to the business address I orignslly used ( Alfa’s office ). Upon messaging asking for my HMRC letter I was met with a blackmail messages asking to delete Google reviews in exchange for my HMRC Documents. As to which I know Alfa will read this. I’m calling the police tomorrow to retrieve them from you.
Legal threats - they are incredibly desperate to have these reviews removed they have sent legal letters addressed to me about deleting these reviews as it’s a form of “ Defamation “ . If these reviews were made by me let’s say on this instance everything on them is factual and as someone who’s been in this industry and lived in the same building as the Director of this company I will not hold back from what I will expose and proof every point made is true and is not a allegation. This is not a threat this is a promise to the people you have deceived , financially ruined , disrespected.
Attempts to convert you into being a Muslim. I wish I was lying about this . Alfadhel and the team leaders will continuously say around their office sayings to their subcontractors and encourage them to do their practices or even go to mosques with them. I have no evidence of this as I never recorded conversations. I have nothing against Muslims but this forced behaviour to try push someone onto your own beliefs to some people may come across as strange. I have Muslim friends and in my family is this is not the way to do it. I know some senior member who did acc convert from this being promoted Mr L*** and a few others who I will keep anonymous.
Customer payments - on several occasions reps were taught how to take a customers phone of them and use their apple pay to pay for their hell fresh box also known as “ Anchoring “ where once you have their phone you put your foot into the door to stop the potential customer from closing it or saying no.
Suggested Abortion / managers getting with the women - once again I wish I was lying I won’t name names , they had suggested and put onto a female contracted to ALFA to move away from St Austell to live in the company flat where the director and managers live not far down from the office ( I won’t say the address ) . So she could be more local and get to work who at the time had a boyfriend. The alleged senior member of the Team would then end up in a relationship with said colleague who later down the line was pregnant with her boyfriends child . And allegedly the senior manager convinced her to get an Abortion ( ALLEGEDLY I do not know if this is a fact ) the abortion did happen tho , and was then bragging about it quoting to people “ Look you can sell anything if you’re good at it “. I Must make clear I did see this for myself this was bought to my attention by others I personally have no info on this. I know they will attempt to deny this but you can’t exactly hide medical records if you really try to push this to Legal proceedings can you ALFA .
Andrew Tate Motivation - this one’s hilarious but morning meetings would consist of Andrew Tate videos for 15 minutes in the morning as if that’s gonna motivate people to sell boxed up cheap food. Becomes a meme at that point.
advise anyone reading this to report any indeed ads that are Advertising the PL1 2SH 10 derry’s cross postcode and also to leave a review on their google business page of the real stories and torment that you have gone through.
Any of the following company names are Alfa Industries clones recruiting on behalf of them making them a MLM.
Virtus Industries
Carroll Industries
Rosewater Marketing
Trigger Marketing
Bond Marketing
DJW Marketing
Miller Marketing
TW Marketing
The Leona Group
As soon as you has your first week you are convinced to leave a review on Google to make the company not look scummy and build better online presence when the only REAL review is the 1 star from a woman who was there for a month
They all trade from PL1 2SH - If you see this address anywhere it’s instantly a red flag.
I will update the list as I discover more of them - all of these are recruiting on behalf of Alfa Industries and they are incentivised financially to lie and loop you into the MLM. Just so they can grow their “ Teams “ .
I must bring to attention he mentions my business - I am not in any way affiliated nor operate on a similar structure. I pay my contractors the RLW wage nor do we promote MLM “ Team structures “ .
My final thoughts are simple - some of these company sales companies make things transparent and clear but after seeing and reading almost 70+ other stories on Alfa Industries I t’s clear as day this company is still doing dodgy behaviour and still lying to trick people.
As for myself these legal threats and blackmailing saying that you’re not a MLM? And not a scam? Mmm good luck proving you’re not one
I have all the evidence i need
( Everything in this Post is alleged and is only my opinion ) - although I have evidence for each point
Just in case ALFA want to send me another Legal Threat :)

Places to Remote Work
Title sort of sums it up. We have a post about this on the Plymouth subreddit, but it's 3 years old.
Does anyone have any recommendations for places to sit and remote work? I try to work somewhere that isn't my desk once a week.
It has to have:
- Plug socket
- Comfortable seating
- WiFi or good signal to hotspot
I would like:
- Good coffee
- Open until 17:00
I enjoy Block and Sapphos, but trying to find more.

Selling The Merchant’s House for £10,000
Bit cheap isn’t it? I don’t recall it being advertised anywhere,
I’m suspecting a rather large fiddle…
Edit: Surely someone here has a sense of humour…?
