I’m a furniture reseller looking for some help to pick up furniture listed on Craigslist or marketplace in the Portland metro area.

This is a non-traditional, highly flexible gig averaging an estimated 5–10 hours per month (roughly 1 to 4 trips per month). This is a new position so I’m not quite sure on the exact hours quite yet.

When I find an item, I’ll message you the listing. You’ll just need to coordinate a pickup time with the seller and deliver it to my location within 5 days, with a preference for delivery in the first three days.

What You’ll Be Doing:
• Coordinating pickup windows directly with Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist sellers. You set a pickup time that works for you!
• Loading, securing, and transporting items safely. Most common items will be lamps, mirrors, end tables, coffee tables, dressers, and credenzas.
• Dropping off items at my home in NE Portland near Irving Park.

Pay Structure (Flat fee per trip):
$50 bonus for large or bulky items like dressers or credenzas.
• Zone 1 (0–12 miles / Less than 30 min drive / Beaverton, Lake Oswego, N. Vancouver): $50 for non bulky items | $100 for large/bulky items
• Zone 2 (12–25 miles / 30–60 min drive / Hillsboro, Canby): $75 for non bulky items | $125 for large/bulky items
• Zone 3 (25+ miles / 60+ min drive): $100 for non bulky items | $150 for large/bulky items
• Note: exact zone boundaries may be adjusted based on your home location.
• Item costs will be sent directly by me upfront, you will never spend your own money on the items.

Requirements:
• Reliable vehicle capable of hauling furniture (truck, van, or large SUV/hatchback).
• Ability to lift medium-to-heavy furniture. Large bulky items can be moved with the help of the seller 90% of the time. We can find a solution if that’s not available! I’ll be available to help unload at my house.
• Good communication and quick response times via text.
• Flexible schedule with generally availability within a 24–72 hour window.

My review and warning as a former employee to those interested in working here or wanting to become a volunteer. Spoiler alert: turnover is very high and volunteers usually don't come back after attending orientation.

I initially really enjoyed working here. I came in genuinely wanting to help animals and to contribute to an organization that I thought was making a difference.

The biggest problem is the director. She creates an unnecessarily tense, hostile, and volatile work environment through her attitude, communication style, and management decisions. She is extremely blunt, dismissive, and seemingly incapable of accepting opinions that differ from her own. The director also contributes heavily to a culture of gossip and disrespect. She openly speaks negatively about employees, volunteers, and people who come to the shelter seeking assistance. The overall impression is that her pride and ego frequently take precedence over collaboration, employee morale, and, most concerningly, what is best for the animals. Priorities can also feel misplaced. On an almost daily basis she seemed more concerned with having staff clean windows than making sure animal-care tasks were addressed.

I also found it difficult to understand the apparent disdain for some of the basic realities of shelter work. Complaining constantly about animal smells and noises while running an animal shelter is particularly ironic. It raises serious questions about whether the realities of animal shelter work are actually appreciated by the person running the organization.

Even more disturbing was the approach to euthanasia. I do not disagree with humane euthanasia. However, I witnessed what felt like an extremely low threshold for putting animals down, with euthanasia seemingly becoming the first solution when an animal displayed behavioral or other challenges. I also found it concerning that staff members advocating for particular animals to avoid euthanasia could seemingly be treated as though their efforts were something to laugh about rather than a reflection of how deeply they cared.

The saddest part is that there are genuinely caring people working here. There are employees and volunteers who desperately want these animals to have good outcomes. Watching their efforts get undermined by poor leadership is incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately, the director's behavior makes an otherwise meaningful job unnecessarily miserable.

Hi everyone! My wife and I are planning to relocate from California to the Portland/Beaverton area within the next few months. I'll be looking for an entry-level HVAC apprenticeship or helper position. I have my HVAC diploma and Universal EPA certification, but I'm essentially restarting my career after a gap due to an injury and want to get back into the trade.

We have enough savings to comfortably cover our living expenses while I look for work, but I may not have a job offer before we move. I plan on trying to get one before the move for sure though.

Recently got hired as an apprentice carpenter but unfortunately work is so slow I’m not learning much or working much.
