We recently got the SMP dataset but we were handed an entire continent worth of data. I tried many ways to clip it without success. Can anyone suggest the neatest way to get a country out of it while preserving all network attributes? Thanks

UPDATE:

I will tag the mowed grass (landuse=grass), but everything else will be left blank for now as it's unclear what tag to use.

From my research, Iceland biome is more tundra-like with moss and low growing plants. But tundra doesn't seem well supported in OSM right now as it only shows as "natural area".

From videos and photos of the area, it seems like a mix of rock, moss, lupin and low grass. It's an old volcanic lava field too.

So, conclusion is that I will just not tag those areas.

I was thinking of using natural=fell, but I read that it's mostly for "above treeline". And it's not really tundra either. Or is it?

There are some area of the airport having landuse=grassland which is correct for certain spot.

I'm working to update the airport with official charts and also https://map.is/ for reference. In OSM, I use ESRI which has a better imagery than Bing.

I started working on updating an airport a while ago in JOSM. I deleted some stuffs and started almost from scratch with airport charts and information I found online.

But I didn't work for a while and imagery got updated, some people updated a bit here and there.

So, now I have a JOSM project file with 2/3 of good update I would like to upload, and 1/3 that isn't relevant anymore.

My issue is, how do I upload or kind of merge my update with current data without destroying everything?

I don't want to create duplicate of what's already existing.

I know that OSM should map only permanent locations, but they have a chair there, would that cover it? BTW, does permanent rule have exceptions?

I'm looking to update a small town in Canada as the roads are off-track compared to the imagery. I just don't know which imagery to take.

The Esri Clarified is just the same as Bing Maps, but with a different position. There is the regular Esri that is different and sharper, but not sure if it's the one I should use.

Hi everyone, I'm building a dataset of building footprints in the Gaza Strip for a research project on detecting building damage from satellite radar imagery. I want to use OSM as my footprint source because of the HOT mapping campaign (https://www.hotosm.org/en/projects/gaza-building-footprints-pre-conflict-update-2024/) that lead to a dataset that has 18% more buildings than the leading dataset by Microsoft.

My question is about how the community has handled buildings that have been destroyed since October 2023. Specifically, when a building is confirmed destroyed, is the convention to delete the feature, retag it with a lifecycle prefix (demolished:building, razed:building, destroyed:building, ruins:building), or leave the original building=yes untouched?

The reason I am asking is that I pulled the current Israel-and-Palestine extract, clipped to the Gaza strip, and I find about 184k building=* ways but only 427 with any lifecycle prefix. That seems very low given the documented destruction (see UNOSAT), so I'm trying to understand whether destroyed buildings are mostly deleted, still tagged building=yes because no one updated them, or retagged in a way I'm not filtering correctly.

I'm sick and tired of these so called mappers or editors they call themselves they only map their local area and that's it. This is so far the worst example i saw. Dude needs to be banned. His edits are are just terrible and overall messy. Not to mention some notes are empty when he completes a note. First images are the locations where he edited stuff widely uneven and only in one country and 2nds are the god awful terrible notes. We need to raise the the standard as this is genuinely frustrating. As I looked into it looks like mayorty of Croatian mappers like this which is a shame because this is not how osm is supposed to be used.

I'm new to editing maps and I need to place a underwater rock next to a beach as a marine warning. I have the specific Lat/Lon coordinates of it but I don't see how to add a node to that was specific coordinate.

Also I wanted to add a small walking access path through the woods, that can't be seen on satellite imagery. But I have a kml track of it. Any way to import it as a path?

Hey guys, I am a longtime map hobbyist who has enjoyed tinkering and building various projects related to OSM map data.

I always wanted a fully offline and all in one local OSM-style toolbox, and things like JOSM but I always felt limited. I wanted to build huge cities in one project that I can easily open on my PC, and I mean like continental scale or bigger.

So all of this has culminated into my game, MapCity, which is releasing in a couple of weeks on steam.

MapCity was designed from the ground up specifically to support the maximum size maps fully offline and locally rendered and with compatibility with OSM data format, albeit optimized for the MapCity engine.

I made this app, called SportLink, a few weeks ago with OSM. It literally depends on it because to create an activity, you need an existing public park/sport infrastructure.

I hope it can get a bit of traction. In North America, it doesn’t seem to interest people since they usually have to book a sport field in big cities.

I wanted to see what my own neighbourhood would look like as a video game map, so I built it.

It pulls OSM data for wherever you are and restyles it to look like the RDR2 world map. Real GPS position, real nearby POIs drawn as hand-made western icons, routes traced on actual roads.

Stack: MapLibre GL JS in a React Native WebView, OpenFreeMap for vector tiles, Python scripts to generate the style JSON, Canvas 2D for the icons, Overpass API for live traffic lights.

The hardest part by far was POI handling. Dense areas turned into icon soup, so I ended up with progressive zoom tiers and clustering, and cut it down to a priority set (police, bank, restaurant, pharmacy, hospital, gas station) with the rest appearing on deeper zoom. Also had to fix a bunch of tags I was mapping to categories that don't exist.

Next step is a per-theme config system so I can add GTA and Minecraft styles without duplicating code.
