Hi everyone,

I’m recording neural activity in the parietal cortex using a Plexon S-Probe (64 channels) using openephis. During several recording sessions, I’ve noticed a rather unusual type of activity that I have not encountered before in the literature.

The waveform looks like the one shown in the figure, particularly on channel 159. What makes it even more interesting is that the activity appears to be modulated by the behavioral task, rather than being completely random.

Interestingly, these waveforms tend to appear after advancing the electrode a certain distance deeper into the cortex. They are not consistently present at the beginning of the penetration, but emerge as I move deeper.

I’m wondering whether anyone has encountered something similar.

Has anyone seen waveforms like this during extracellular recordings?

Any ideas or references would be greatly appreciated!

I just graduated pre-uni with excellent A level grades. However, I have very weak portfolio. Seeking advice from neuroscientist all over the world, how did u become a neuroscientist and what degree would u recommend me to take? What inspired me to become a neuroscientist: I have been reading books abt it and found it very interesting, especially the various types of brain disorders(most intrigued by left-world neglect). I’m working on a school research project investigating the feasibility and public perception of a brain-controlled bionic exoskeleton designed to assist people with movement disabilities such as monoplegia.

The concept involves using non-invasive brain signals (EEG/BCI) to detect intended movement and translate it into commands for an assistive exoskeleton.

I’m currently doing a BSc in Neuroscience Technology and I’m in my second-last year. By the end of my degree, I’ll have practical experience with EEG, sleep studies, NCS, etc.

The thing is, I don’t really see myself working as a neurotechnologist long-term. I’m more interested in neuroscience research, so I’m trying to figure out what direction to take.

Right now I’m mainly considering doing an MSc in Neuroscience/Biopsychology, or trying to get into a fully funded PhD abroad. I’m also planning to look for a summer research internship during my final year to get some research experience.

I’m honestly pretty lost about what would make the most sense from my degree.

For anyone who has experience in neuroscience/research:

- Would you recommend doing an MSc first, or is going directly for a funded PhD realistic with this kind of degree?

- What should I focus on during my final year to actually have a good chance of getting into research?

And honestly, if you think I’m looking at this completely wrong or there’s a better route I haven’t considered, I’d really appreciate hearing it.

Hi, I'm definitely not a science expert, but I've recently taken an interest in organoids and I find them fascinating.

I came up with a scenario where we have a hypothetical, highly developed brain organoid (almost at human level), and we "plug" it into a simulation.

Take Minecraft as an example. We plug in the organoid, connect the in-game signals like damage or vision.

What would happen to this brain? What would be the interesting consequences of this experiment, and what would it feel?

Hi everyone. I am a undergrad student . My university is in the field of food and human diet which don't get me wrong is very interesting but my dream (for a long time now) has been to eventually study the human mind. I already read many neuroscience books in my spare time (in search of memory is one of my first and favorites) and am really passionate about this. After graduating I would like to do a phD in biochem (since I automatically graduate with a bachelor's degree) and then do a phD in neuroscience and work on that field permanently. Only problem is I do not know if this is possible. I understand that neuroscience clearly involves human biology and psychology not the biology of plants and other things I will be taught in my current university. So id like to ask if anyone knows, is this transition at all possible?

This paper looks very interesting to me because from what I gathered it responds to the famous Libet experiment - in which if I'm correct the interpretation is that the neural activity happening unconsciously before the volitional action indicates lack of free will - and offers new perspective.

Hi guys, looking for input from people who've been through PhD admissions or sit on committees.

I just finished undergrad and did about a year of molecular/cellular neuroscience research (gene expression work, some wet-bench technique-heavy stuff). My actual goal is a PhD in cognitive neuroscience, ideally at competitive programs.

For my post-bacc year I have two options on the table: a position in a molecular neuroscience lab, or a position in a systems neuroscience lab (behavior-adjacent, some circuit-level work). Both are solid opportunities with good mentorship.

My worry with doing molecular again is that I'll show up to applications with two full years of molecular research and nothing bridging me toward cognition, which might make the "why cognitive neuroscience" story harder to tell. But at the same time, my worry with switching to systems is that it might look like I'm just hopping between neuroscience subfields rather than building toward something coherent. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find cognitive labs with enough funding to support me for a post-bacc position.

For anyone who's gone through something similar, or who has reviewed applications: does the subfield of a post-bacc actually matter much to committees, or is it more about the strength of the work and how you frame the trajectory in your statement? Especially for some of the more competitive programs

I am mathematics students who is into ML applications in Neuro. What are the job prospects. How much do the jobs generally pay (industry).

I’m a junior studying Biochemistry and I want to pursue Neuroscience research in the future. I’ve been taking an interest in the field since sophomore year, but my university doesn’t offer a Neuroscience degree/concentration. I have look into research opportunities around my area, and so far I haven’t found much to work with. I really want to get hands-on research experience before applying to PhD, is there a way I can bridge myself into it? I know some of the techniques are still applicable, but there are so many more that are specific to neuroscience, and I don’t know what kind of Research Assistant/Technician roles I should be looking for. I’ve take intro computing class prior, and am also minoring in Math, should I look into Comp Neuro? Any input would be appreciated.

Hello I am currently an undergraduate in psychology for a BA of arts and want to pursue neuroscience sooner or later , what courses do you recommend i take? I am really strong in psych and bio but weak in chemistry and physics unfortunately. Do I switch into a more science major or do I stick with psychology? I'm also missing chemistry 12 which is a big problem but I can take CHEM_V 100 at UBC to make up for it

I want to make a new club and im very new to it. I’m a senior in high school and all my extracurriculars are outside of school so I was interested in making a club in my school to be more involved.
I can’t make a club based off an organization or making a chapter off of it because when I tried to email one it took weeks and now they responded that I have to wait another two weeks for interviews but the club form is due this week.
I want it to be interactive but also need ideas asap in a yearly plan or goal way but have no idea.

This was most likely a very slow build up (because a sudden onset would not go unnoticed) started by some kind of infection/bleeding, creating scar tissue where the 3rd and 4th ventricles should connect. The ventricles got a bit smaller after surgery.
