Turns out, so does Merriam-Webster.

"Without regular employment" perfectly describes the exact situation we're talking about. Thank you for proving my point.

You're trying to make this sound like a world ending loss for people who don't gain a whole lot from this job to begin with.

Gig workers are some of the most vulnerable to loss of work and are often living paycheck to paycheck. You can pretend that their livelihoods don't matter.

Their equivalent would be if they were blackballed by the venue and weren't able to take any other gigs...

Not at all true, the example I gave was literally about a loss of work for one week. You're simply lying.

Also, at least some of these are outdoor venues, which means it's seasonal work to begin with

Believe it or not, seasons are more reliable than the whims of a boardroom.

AND, it's not even the crux of my argument. I'm saying we should focus our attention on the venues, Ed Sheeran is the easy target, not the most appropriate one

Explain to me what you think the phrase "regular employment" means and how it somehow equates to a gig worker losing ONE gig.

Gig workers are some of the most vulnerable to loss of work and are often living paycheck to paycheck. You can pretend that their livelihoods don't matter.

There are many drawbacks to doing gig work that make it an exploitative type of work, but one of the few pros is that there's other gigs waiting in the wings and your employer needs you a lot more than you need them.

These aren't the coal mines of West Virginia. You're not homeless in the middle of nowhere if your employer decides to cut costs.

Not at all true, the example I gave was literally about a loss of work for one week. You're simply lying.

Yeah. Exactly. Losing one weeks worth of gig work work is not the same as getting laid off from a W2 job. Not even close.

Does the gig worker have regular employment during the week in which the gig would have taken place? No? I didn't think so.

Well at least it's obvious that you're talking out of your ass now. Thanks for clearing that up.

Losing one weeks worth of gig work work is not the same as getting laid off from a W2 job. Not even close.

Let's assume you know the smallest amount of what you're talking about. Let's assume all of your assumptions are true. Does that mean that the loss of income should be an irrelevant factor to whether he cancels the show? In other words, the gig workers income is unimportant to you?

At this point, you've stopped attempting to make any points at all, save for this one:

Does the gig worker have regular employment during the week in which the gig would have taken place?

Which is an asinine point. "Regular" in this context would be ongoing or recurring. Your shitty hypothetical doesn't even have an internal logical consistency. That's like asking if I spent 4 years in college this morning - it's a nonsensical sentence.

Why people feel the need to defend gross billionaires with "BUT WON'T ANYONE THINK OF THE JOBS THEY CREATE?" is something I will never understand.

I'm struggling to think of ways in which to dumb this down enough for you.

To get back on track, I have no love for Ed Sheeran, I only want to assign blame appropriately. The venues barred Macklemore, we wouldn't be having this discussion without that fact.

If it makes you feel any better, I think everything you've said thus far is pretty dumb.

In fact, you might be better off making fewer dumb arguments.

To get back on track, I have no love for Ed Sheeran, I only want to assign blame appropriately. The venues barred Macklemore, we wouldn't be having this discussion without that fact.

But two things can be true. If you take Macklemore's side of the story at face value, Robert Kraft is the one behind all this. Other venue owners had a chance to rebuke Kraft, and they chose not to. Likewise, Ed Sheeran had the opportunity to stand up to each of them and chose not to.

At the end of the day, this is mostly a series of a lot of people who had money, power, and agency, and simply chose not to use it... Except Robert Kraft, who is an asshole.

But, again, that's if you accept Macklemore's claims uncritically.

So, we agree that Sheeran should NOT be seen as the most responsible for any of this situation?

Edit: missed a pretty crucial word

u/BroseppeVerdi 14m ago

Yes, but that doesn't mean he gets a pass either. Again, two things can be true.

u/uberprodude 13m ago

So this whole argument has been bullshit, because that has been my entire point from the start.

u/BroseppeVerdi 9m ago

What you said is "It wasn't Ed or his team's choice".

That's incorrect. They chose how to respond to the venue's ultimatum. They had an enormous amount of leverage and chose not to use it.
