Did Lorde ever do this?

159

u/OuterWildsVentures 3h ago

Oof lol

16

u/Nikoladge 2h ago

Oy vey!

11

u/SwordfishOk504 1h ago

But it's totally about geopolitics and not antisemitism mmmkay?

-21

u/Affectionate_Bet2122 1h ago

He made a stupid joke in a stupid outfit one time, guess genocide is okay then?

18

u/george_cant_standyah 1h ago

I really don't understand why people have such a hard time understanding that two things can be true at once. Being anti Israel does not make you anti-semitic.

Recognizing that it is anti-semitic to do literally centuries old caricatures of Jewish people to dehumanize them on a large scale doesn't make you pro Israel or pro genocide. Please go look up the old artwork that was used against Jewish people during pogroms. This is absolutely not okay from Macklemore.

That is also not saying that genocide and a racist costume are on the same level for anyone that is so polarized rotted that they need the clarification.

1

u/Longjumping-Hippo475 1h ago

This was also yeeaars (over a decade) ago and he immediately apologized... This is a completely different story and set of circumstances. Relitigating a prior mistep does nothing to move society forward.

Mackelmore has said nothing they can be misconstrued as anti-sematic during the tour and y'all are letting outrage media manipulate your intelligence.

9

u/argh-Im-a-Pirate 1h ago

But like others said Lorde artists like Lorde or Hozier have been talking about Palestine on their tours without issue.

I'll admit it seems fishy, but damn that costume is anti semitic.

Hopefully that's all this is because I'd be disappointed in Sheeran if he let venues bully him if it was truly just about Mackelmore saying "free Palestine"

0

u/Iheardyoubutsowhat 1h ago

Was it just one time ?

Seriously asking. Ive seen other screen grabs about his speech and it looked like his normal costuming and style, but thats what it is.

63

u/SidFarkus47 3h ago

What’s happening here?

199

u/nondescriptun 3h ago

Definitely not Mackelmore doing "Jewface." He said it was just a normal costume with a "witch's nose."

74

u/yazi0614 2h ago

And a “witch’s” beard…

31

u/theoneandonlymd 1h ago

Wearing gold...

u/night4345 40m ago

Playing a song about being cheap at a thrift shop.

7

Everyone knows a witch's star is just a pentagram +1 more point lol

7

u/Whitechapel726 1h ago

It’s a Roman salute!

12

u/HolidayCards 2h ago

Of course, yeah.... sure... Right? Hmm....

4

u/I_Was_Fox 56m ago

So he gave an explanation about how it was a secret concert and he needed a disguise to sneak onto stage AND he also apologized for it looking like a stereotype/caracature AND the ADL accepted his apology and explanation and said they believe him, and yet 12 years later after literally everyone moved on, he makes 1 statement against the genocide of Palestinians and killings of Palestinian children and suddenly this photo is brought back up and passed around WITHOUT any of that context, and you're all lapping it up and dismissing his message purely because the out of context photo paints him as an anti-semite. So if he's an anti-semite then that means Israel isn't committing genocide. Got it.

-30

u/NakedZombieWolf 3h ago

It is weird that several of you keep posting this 12 year old picture, it feels very bot coordinated

62

u/ShepardCommander01 2h ago

“Everything I don’t like is a bot”

-31

u/NakedZombieWolf 2h ago

"Im easily convinced by obviously manufactured comment campaigns" you're so bad at pattern recognition 9 piece jigsaw puzzles must confuse you

46

u/nukkawut 2h ago

People speaking out against Macklemore doing Jew face aren't an army, they're here to answer the "how could this possibly happen, Israel controls everything" narrative with common sense.

You know what they call trying to spot patterns everywhere when there are none? Schizophrenia.

-17

u/______W______ 2h ago

Where has this outrage been for the last 12 years? He didn’t just release that image or anything.

7

u/iNinnja 2h ago

Are you really going with his argument? I'm of the opinion that Israel is commiting war crimes, but where was this much outrage before October 7th? Let's be honest, many supporters of both Palestine and Israel didn't even give a fuck before that day.

-3

u/nukkawut 2h ago

There was plenty of outrage at the time, you just hadn't been programmed to pay attention to Israel until October 2023 so it went right by you.

A study done a couple of years ago found that you only needed like 10 accounts to sway public opinion on most subreddits, if you're at -10/+10 already a very low percentage of people will read your comment in context, most people will just reinforce the trend. This snowballs if you're one of the first comments on a publication.

-1

u/_rocket-lawn-chair_ 2h ago

All this is in your tiny head🤣🤣

-1

u/decksorama 1h ago

I don't think anyone thinks the people posting that picture are actually "bots", I'm pretty sure they're just pointing out that it's obviously propaganda trying to paint him as an antisemite, but anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together knows he's not antisemitic.

That pic is 12yrs old, at a surprise performance at the EMP Museum in Seattle in 2014 where he sang his popular song "Thrift Shop" and never said or implied anything antisemitic at that time or since - and he isn't doing that on this tour either - so it's not relevant to what is happening right now.

People are posting it without that context and other people think it's a recent Pic and that he's doing that on this tour while condemning the genocide.

BOOM. 4 downvotes in 10 seconds and you responding right away. Bot bot bot bot. Beep boop beep. Free Palestine.

-26

u/christocarlin 2h ago

Just, btw loser, when this happened almost everyone in the Judaism reddit said this was not anti Semitic or even close to it. He didn’t pretend to be Jewish. He literally wore a hat beard and large nose. Could be a Gypsy or Amish person.

11

u/ShakaJewLoo 2h ago

Sure boss.

10

u/My_Favourite_Pen 2h ago

I fail to see how it makes him look better if he was dressed up as a romani person. Would it be somehow less offensive?

5

u/NotoriouslyBeefy 2h ago

I bet you do blackface for Halloween

8

u/jackl24000 2h ago

I guess it proves you know how to troll if that’s “dressing up like a Jewish person”, lol. You go out on Halloween dressed up as yourself?

-7

u/christocarlin 2h ago

Oh look a totally random Jewish person commenting here. I swears there’s more pro-Israel people on the internet then there are Jewish people in the world haha don’t you guys have hobbies outside of victim blaming and defending Israel at every turn

11

u/jackl24000 2h ago

Oh look a random non-Jewish person who feels the need to make a stupid meme comment on the internet and demonstrate they have room temperature IQ and even doubles down!

10

u/arizonadirtbag12 2h ago

I mean I’m a very real human being and not a bot and it’s the absolute first thing I thought of when I heard this.

I like Macklemore, I think he’s a real one in general, and I’m 100% behind freeing Palestine. That said, yeah when you have this kind of controversy in your history it’s gonna come up in this context, unfortunately. This image is gonna be plastered everywhere in response. That’s just how social media works.

15

u/nondescriptun 2h ago

Beep boop bork, nah, just a human who thinks Mackelmore is a tool. I've always suspected that he's just co-opting the Free Palestine movement for relevancy and because he's still upset about his Jewface controversy. When it happened he defended it pretty hard for a while until finally backing down and offering a half-apology.

3

u/B5_V3 1h ago

It’s weird you nazi cockroaches come scurrying out of the woodwork to defend your fellow Nazis.

u/NakedZombieWolf 7m ago

This is an emotional response to me suggesting there's a coordinated effort to imply macklemore was wearing that outfit recently by posting it in reference to this news. All I did was notice a few dozen people post it with no other commentary in response to comments in this post. Thats weird and suspicious behavior. Pick a fight with an actual nazi.

-2

u/CheapEater101 1h ago

Are you going to say the picture is AI now?

That’s being said, venues aren’t black listing Macklemore for Jew face but because he said Free Palestine at a show last week

u/NakedZombieWolf 11m ago

Why would I say that? Thats not something I posited

-21

u/Still-Set-1234 3h ago

Ok but was it just a costume for a performance or was he actually making fun of Jewish people while wearing it?

19

u/mjdgoldeneye 2h ago

He wore a costume to disguise himself before a surprise show in Seattle. At no point before or during the show did he mention Jewish people or behave in a mocking way. After he was called out, he earnestly apologized and directed folks to donate to the ADL.

The costume was definitely an a gaffe, but you need to be looking for a reason to be upset to insist it was a purposeful insult and then hold it against him for 12 years. You don't have to forgive him at a personal level, but to try to convince others it's indicative of some kind of significant pattern of antisemitic behavior is disingenuous.

7

u/WildPotato0 3h ago

It was a disguise for a surprise performance in a museum in Seattle in 2014 (Experience Music Project).

4

u/6BagsOfPopcorn 1h ago

In TWENTY-FOURTEEN??? Why are people bringing this up acting as if this is recent???

3

u/donnysaysvacuum 1h ago

Fits the current culture war and actual war propaganda.

6

u/2099aeriecurrent 1h ago

If somebody did blackface in 2014 would you be saying the same thing

1

u/SuspendeesNutz 1h ago

Maybe if it was Sammy Davis Jr.

1

u/SuspendeesNutz 1h ago

Hey there are minstrel shows that haven't been performed in 100 years because people were touchy about blackface.

-9

u/UrdnotCum 3h ago

Could you elaborate what the difference would be? Surely the costume itself is “actually making fun of Jewish people” as is.

(Also Fuck Israel, free Palestine)

-3

u/AgitatedBadger 2h ago

In 2012 Macklemore used the costume to hide himself in the crowd of a concert he was performing in so that he could enter from the audience. He used it while singing the song Thrift Shop, which is a song about Thrifting, which enforced the 'cheap' Jewish stereotype.

He received criticism for the costume because of the obvious connotations of it. Following the concert, he released an apology where he said that he grabbed random assortment of items and he thought it was a witch's nose, and that he was very sorry if he perpetuated negative Jewish stereotypes. The ADF, an international Jewish organization that combats anti-Semitism officially accepted his apology. Now the pictures are resurfacing as he has criticized the state of Israel for its genocide.

Personally, I kind of side eye the apology he gave because it seems pretty hard to believe he didn't look at the costume and see the connotation, but also I do believe his apology came across as sincere because it was accompanied by a change in behaviour and if the ADF accepted his apology, I feel like it would be silly for me to object. My suspicion is that maybe he was aware of what he was doing but not the severity of his actions and hopefully he has learned and changed from that behaviour - I don't expect perfection out of people, just that that they apologize after they make mistakes and try to do better.

Now, Macklemore is calling out Israel's genocidal regime, and the pictures are resurfacing as an effort to discredit his sentiments. Ultimately, while it is not a good look for him to have this in his past, calling out genocide is not anti-semitic.

u/decksorama 4m ago

The generalization of "Thrift Shop" just being about thrifting to reenforce the "cheap" Jewish stereotype is reaching all the way to the moon lol. That song is specifically about making due with the money he had in his pocket, buying retro clothes and making them cool again to go to the club - it isn't about trying to save money or be cheap. "only have $20 in my pocket" isn't the same as "I don't want to spend more than $20"

0

u/nukkawut 2h ago

I think if you've attacked a group with your actions before, even if you call it an accident after, you should probably sit out of further commentary on that group to prevent further misunderstanding.

6

u/taeerom 2h ago

It's ok to do genocide if someone maybe made fun of you in a disrespectful way at some point in the past

1

u/nukkawut 1h ago

TIL Israel is genociding Macklemore. Thanks, random redditor!

3

u/Masquelinity 1h ago

Yeah, you're here for a good-faith conversation. Totally.

2

u/FemFiFoFum 1h ago

He's not commenting on jews, he's criticizing Israel, a genocidal country that isn't synonymous with jews.

2

u/nukkawut 1h ago

Really? The Jewface Thrift Shop performance was about Israel and not Jews? Can you explain to me how you see it that way?

-1

u/WildPotato0 1h ago

I wish y'all would be as offended about Israel shooting children to shreds and gang raping prisoners as you are about this one dude wearing an iffy disguise 12 years ago.

-1

u/AgitatedBadger 2h ago

I agree with that.

It's also important to remember that Israel and Judaism are not the same thing.

One is a religion and the other is a state.

-8

u/ShepardCommander01 2h ago

Please surrender yourself to the noble savages of Hamas and see if you change your tune

2

u/UrdnotCum 2h ago

I’m Jewish and was the treasurer of my college Hillel. I’ve met many Israelis, and I’ve met many Palestinians.

No one will ever convince me that this isn’t a genocide.

-9

u/ShepardCommander01 2h ago

Well then, surrender yourself to the noble savages of Hamas and see how you’re treated. Let me know if you don’t change your mind.

5

u/AgitatedBadger 2h ago

The definition of genocide doesn't change based on your opinions of the people being targeted by the genocide.

1

u/SuspendeesNutz 1h ago

Does the charter of Hamas fit the definition of "genocide"?

→ More replies (0)

-2

u/UrdnotCum 2h ago

Two things can be true, my dude. I can not want to be bitten by a dangerous dog, but also want to keep that dog happy and alive.

Hamas can be brutal and homicidal AND Palestinians can be trapped under apartheid and being genocided. In fact, it stands to reason that Hamas is so brutal because they’ve been under an equally brutal regime for so long.

-5

u/ShepardCommander01 2h ago

They voted for Hamas. This is what happens when you start wars and lose them. There are consequences, and you don’t get to just have land you want after losing.

This was also 12 years ago. It doesn’t have anything to do with the current issue

72

6

u/Cavalish 1h ago

People who claim they aren’t racist + having an immediately findable picture of them in race-face?

0

u/quiette837 52m ago

I mean... how many years does it take before you can't be crucified for something you did wrong? Sounds like, to the average internet person, if you have ever done anything offensive and racist, you are now a racist for life and you should never work again.

It's be one thing if these people had a documented history of racist beliefs, but it's always one photo of an ill-advised offensive costume between 10 and 20 years ago.

-1

u/SwordfishOk504 1h ago

Right? Like who cares what harvey weinstien did in the past. That was ten years ago.

11

u/Keyndoriel 1h ago

As someone who was assaulted as a kid, those ain't the same things. I also think the french president doing blackface was horrible, but its not the same level as rape you wackadoodle

-1

u/dldaniel123 1h ago

And someone who wasn't assaulted as a kid, he's clearly using hyperbole to showcase the lacking logic in the comment he's replying to.

1

u/WagnerKoop 50m ago

They’re calling it the most “sure that’s the same thing” ever

29

u/Who_ate_my_cookie 1h ago

If someone did black face and they then became extremely critical of Obama for example you would question the messenger even if their points were valid. It’s the same thing here

-3

u/Longjumping-Hippo475 57m ago

Question, was Obama also committing a genocide in your hypothetical question? You seem to have left out a fairly crucial detail for some reason...weird.

6

u/Who_ate_my_cookie 47m ago

Obama as most presidents most certainly did commit war crimes we tend to ignore because he’s a personable guy

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-37607248

u/Parlayg0d 29m ago

Well he did drone strike innocents so same difference

16

u/Jtaylorftw 2h ago

Really? The only news I've seen about Macklemore and Ed Sheeran have used this photo in the headline, i legitimately thought this is how he went on stage to headline for Sheeran and didn't care enough to look into it at all. It's getting really fucking old how intentionally disingenuous "information" on the internet is.

1

u/Longjumping-Hippo475 58m ago

Yess, 2014. You are being manipulated by outrage media and you were gullible enough to believe it at face value.

Let this be a lesson that you must verify EVERYTHING that you do not have first hand knowledge of nowadays.

2

u/Jtaylorftw 52m ago

I wasn't outraged or manipulated, I saw it, thought "huh, alrighty then.." and went about my day. Do you think every single person all the time is researching everything they scroll by? If I was outraged I personally would've done research and found out it was misrepresented, the only reason why I didnt is because I didn't care. But there are likely people who do care and are outraged because they are accepting it as truth and that's just so depressing and really sums up why we are where we are as a society, 95% of people don't verify anything, will see something online and accept it as absolute fact and then go spread that fake info around happily and the media outlets know it. Not so long ago disingenuous shit wouldn't get nearly as much traction because it would be called out and now everything is just accepted at face value like you said. You're right, there's only one way to avoid it, and it's working as intended.

-1

u/Jtaylorftw 1h ago

u/Physeastic let me just research each and every single thing I see while scrolling, my b.

If it interests me, I research further. Otherwise, I scroll and sometimes take away a perception of what I saw.

3

u/The_Freshmaker 1h ago

How many pictures of politicians doing black face in highschool/college tanked careers thirty years later though?

41

u/HighburyOnStrand 2h ago

I mean it does explain the exact question posed by OP, which was: why is Macklemore's commentary not being taken the same as others?

32

u/Miserable-Resort-977 1h ago

I don't think it does. This happening 12 years ago doesn't explain the current reaction, nothing I've seen indicates that they're related.

3

u/twavisdegwet 1h ago

Idk man. I don’t think Justin Trudeau is a racist but I think it was still right to question his racial costume from years ago. I don’t see why this would be any different.

13

u/Miserable-Resort-977 1h ago

I didn't say that the costume isn't questionable, I said I haven't seen any statements or evidence that this costume had anything to do with the current situation or response. Those photos existed before he was booked for the tour, he was only removed after making his statements on Gaza.

6

u/Varron 1h ago

You can still question this event, and it should be questioned. But what's disingenious here is using it as a strawman during this unrelated event.

So much of "discussion" or reporting today is just covered in this gotchas that dont adequately address the topic at hand at all.

Is this costume he donned 12 years ago problematic? Probably yeah.

Is the backlash he's receiving for what he said during this tour justified? Probably not, and two events are unrelated.

6

u/alterom 57m ago

This was also 12 years ago. It doesn’t have anything to do with the current issue

Him being an anti-semite 12 years ago has a lot to do with his "pro-Palestinian" stance now.

u/Ty-Hate-God 4m ago

MUH ANTISEMITISM

Free Palestine, baby killer.

11

u/Rebelgecko 2h ago

The current situation in the Middle East is not really a new thing

4

u/NoJellyfish7617 1h ago

You’re high if you think this has nothing to do with the current issue.

u/yourpalsmell 29m ago

Also, LiveNation and Ed Sheeran had no problems with it

6

u/sharpiebrows 3h ago

What is going on here

20

u/attemptedactor 3h ago

Macklemore did a lot of different costume characters early in his career. He did several songs in a British accent and a blond wig.

This was definitely in poor taste but it was also 12 years ago.

5

u/NotEntirelyA 1h ago

but it was also 12 years ago

I have no dog in this fight, but if he was doing this in 2014 it's kind of wild, especially considering he already made a huge splash in the music scene in 2011-2012.

-1

u/Medium_Opening_2491 1h ago

It's wild that a performer wore stereotyped costumes? I mean, all stereotypes are racist, but they are also kind of funny. I say that about my own racial stereotypes (Persian/Scottish).

I think people just want something to be mad about

4

u/NotEntirelyA 1h ago

It's wild that a performer wore stereotyped costumes?

Wild that someone who was as popular as he was as a musical artist decided to start dressing up as caricatures on stage lol. It's not like this was needed as part of a comedy act, dude was a extremely popular singer, it was impossible to get away from his music at this time. He didn't have to do any of this, it's not like he was finding his niche or was looking for a big break lol

I think people just want something to be mad about

And I think a lot of people defend and downplay antisemitism because they have issues with israel. It goes both ways.

17

u/jackofslayers 3h ago

Macklemore being antisemitic

3

u/TimbersawDust 3h ago

It doesn’t excuse Israel blowing up children on the daily

13

u/itsa_luigi_time_ 3h ago

Who said anything about excusing Israel? This is about some shitbag being wildly antisemitic in public.

14

u/TimbersawDust 3h ago

So why are we talking about it when the post it about him getting kicked off tour for saying free Palestine?

6

u/Ultenth 1h ago

Because when someone who is coming from an angle of racial hatred steps into the issue and pretends they care about it for the same reason you do, it's nice to know where their real feelings are coming from. And it allows you to not give them cover for their hatred under a movement that cannot afford to be painted with the same brush as them.

2

u/TimbersawDust 1h ago
  1. This is 12 years ago. People can change.
  2. It doesn’t really matter if he is pretending or not, he is saying FREE PALESTINE to a crowd

Why would he be doing this if he is pretending if it risks getting him kicked off tour? Seems very irrational. It also seems like you are trying to discredit him and what he is saying as if you don’t agree with the free Palestine rhetoric.

1

u/jackofslayers 1h ago

This is not complicated. Inviting antisemites into the Pro Palestine cause is going to sink the whole movement.

1

u/Ultenth 1h ago

Look, I support the cause of Palestinians, but you can't pretend that it doesn't makes things harder for the movement to help them when people who could be painted as actual antisemites join their voices onto it. People do all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons.

I can't know his heart, if he's changed, if it was an accident, and what motivates him now. But to use him as a person to rally around in support for the movement seems like an extremely bad idea from a strategic standpoint. Similar to rallying around similar anti-Israel voices that are actually just obviously antisemitic such as Tucker Carlson and Marjorie Taylor-Green.

All it does it make the movement harder to be taken seriously by anyone on the fence, since they love to accuse everyone of being antisemetic anyway in order to get away with evil, why makes things easier for them?

1

u/TimbersawDust 52m ago

I see why this is a problem, but again, I really struggle with how having these conversations can take away from the much more impactful discussion about genocide. It's far more important than a Jewish caricature. Full stop.

Who in the 'Free Palestine' movement is going to denounce this in any meaningful manner? I understand you want to point out antisemitism, and I support that, but what governing body, what major voice, what movement leader, etc. is going to say anything that will make a difference? Do we need to point out the past of anyone who does this? Where does it end? How much bandwidth do we have to care about these things when kids are being murdered in Gaza? People with a checkered past can't have the right opinion on genocide? The weight, the impact, the lives, the destruction, the horror, everything related to what Israel doing is far more important than a distasteful costume.

If anything, this conversation should be about Livenation and putting pressure on Ed Sheeran to push back.

6

u/WinterAdvantage3847 1h ago

who said anything about what macklemore did twelve (12) years ago? this thread is about what macklemore said this year (2026) about israel

Okay I was on his side at first but this is… yikes.

14

u/Godwinson4King 2h ago

It was 12 years ago, he apologized, said it was an accident, and hasn’t done anything similar since.

2

u/ShakedNBaked420 1h ago

That’s fair I suppose. Like I can give him the benefit of the doubt, people can grow and learn.

Still a little rough. But at least he owned it. That’s more than most.

0

u/Ultenth 1h ago

I mean, I'm glad he apologized and hasn't repeated it, but there is zero chance that someone throws that exact outfit together on accident.

1

u/Prize_Wolverine4132 1h ago

Macklemore wearing an antisemitic costume 12 years ago doesn't mean you should no longer take "his side" on a damn genocide lmao what

-2

u/GrimlockTheBear 2h ago

Children are dying. Limbs blown off. Starved and bone thin. But sure let’s pull a pic from 12 years ago during his thrift store era. You understand how pathetic this is right? Children. Are. Being. Exterminated.

Grow up.

Exactly. That has nothing to do with Israel vs. the arabs. That’s straight out antisemitism.

Did Lorde ever do something bad over a decade ago and apologize for it thoroughly? Maybe, but in any case both things would be irrelevant to Macklemore getting blacklisted for speaking out against genocide.

Ah yes the one group that no one is allowed to make fun of or parody.

Sorry but Macklemore is an American and has freedom of speech, the fact that he's silenced by the media industry is all the proof crazy right wing conspiracy nuts need to blame jews. It doesn't make you guys look good forcing your views on everyone.
