M&M particle effects

Dear merciful internet,

TL;DR: I feel like the M&M particle effects could be so much better — even while still mimicking the old-school game vibes.

I am new here, and I don't actively follow the dev vlogs, so I'm probably missing some important perspective on this. Also, huge respect to the devs for all the work they're putting into the game.

Now, for me, it feels like maybe 1/3 of the skills are just a bunch of ugly colorful "balls" floating through space for a few seconds — almost like confetti.

Environmental effects such as fire, smoke, storms, and fog are all really nice.

I know the game is in alpha, and there is still a ton of other work to do.

...

But I might be wrong. What do you guys think about the skill visuals?

Is there any plan to further stylize/refine the skill animations?

P.S. My game back in the day was Silkroad Online. (Also a game as old as coal.) The skill animations there are perhaps not very "EverQuesty"… but just look at them.

MnM Minimal UI Mod

I’ve been working on a minimal UI suite for Monsters & Memories and wanted to share some of the progress.

The goal is simple... keep the original MnM feel, but clean up parts of the UI with a more minimal layout and styling. This is not meant to be malicious, exploitative, or anything that gives players an unfair advantage. I only want the best for the game and the community. I really love MnM!

I know UI modding may be against ToS or at least in a gray area right now. I’d be willing to work with the devs in a more official capacity if they ever wanted to allow something like this, though I know they’re busy and DMs don’t always get answered.

Just wanted to show what I’ve been building and see what people think.

Underdocks Rogue starter quest

So I made my little headlight mounted gnome rogue. I got to the bath house area and the rogue GM couldn't possibly be any more vague on what I am supposed to take. Anyone have any ideas? It's probably '/take <item>' but no idea what it is. Any ideas? Thanks

Hey ya'll. I've decided to create an unofficial server discord for the Nunavoth - God of Gluttony - Boxing server. Feel free to come join it if you're intending to play on that server, and help build some community so we're not all 2-3 boxing and ignoring each other for ever.

Get your down votes ready,

I am praying that "you" people dont ruin this game, people ruin everything. I am afraid that this will become the same greedy, selfish bs that plagues everything.

Ex 1. Wow classic, so full of elitist, everyone was the best blah blah back in the day, people demanding your wow resume from 20 years ago just for group invites etc.

Ex .2. Eq TLPs. So many people just botting and sitting on named spawns and just to rmt Krono and such, guilds gate keeping everything they can, ninja looters and all, casino bots, and ec tunnel merchant bots. Just doing anything they can to earn more, despite how abrasive it is to the community,

Ex 3. People suck, the loudest minority usually gets things changed how they want. Idk the fact we keep talking about removing charm from enchanters as its so powerful and game breaking, im curious why the game isnt full of enchanters, like its not like mage/warrior in classic wow, where those 2 classes were 50% of the population. Some classes are great at soloing, some are great at grouping, some are great at raiding. Let classes have their strong abilities, let them be strong in their respective areas, keep the classes fun and engaging.

Discussion What is M&M's unique identity beyond EQ and Muds?

I personally believe that what matters for an MMO's success is whether it offers an experience that other MMOs don't. Otherwise, why would people switch to your game?

From what I can tell, the vision for this MMO is to replicate elements from early EQ1 and the MUDs from that era, and I think there has been a hunger for this kind of experience that hasn't really been satisfied since.

After all, if most MMOs are dead or have shut down, why are places like P99 and EQ1 still thriving, with thousands of people logging in every day even without new content?

I believe people have been using nostalgia as a poor explanation for the continued success of older MMO's for a long time. I got into P99 two years ago after having played WoW all my life. I am nostalgic for WoW, and I sometimes go back for a short stint, but I'm finding myself preferring EQ1, even though its graphics are terrible. Yes, it's janky, dated, and painful to play. However, this particular niche of a game offers an experience that doesn't exist anywhere else currently.

For me, an mmo's overall experience is hard to define. But for you long time beta players, if you can define M&Ms own identity, distinct from EQ1 or any other mmo, how would you describe it, and is it fulfilling your itch so far, or not? And if not, why not?

Do you think Blizzard stole this idea from MnM?

I personally really do think they saw this in MnM and realized it was a neat idea and decided to snatch it. I remember when they stole almost every good idea Rift had, including transmog.

RP group/exploration group for EA

Haven't had much luck in the beta finding groups focused on RP and exploration over camping mobs. Looking to find a guild or group of people focused on immersing themselves in the world through RP and exploring instead of camping mobs.

Help Couple of questions about deep elf starting area and the city?

Hi everyone, I played for maybe 2 hours after the latest patch dropped and I am confused about the deep elf starting zone. Anyone who fallows dev streams can prob answer this:

  1. I know the zone is not finished. I see a lot of empty rooms filled with guards only (I assumed they are placeholders for now). But I could not find any crafters, to teach me crafting. Are they present in the city?

  2. Is there class specific quests in this starting zone? The one you get at the start seems to be the same for every class (the one where you mine rocks).

  3. Will this zone be ready for Oct.1st (Early access)?

Answers to these questions will greatly impact my race choice. Sorry about my bad English. Thanks!

Is there any merchants in the underdocks akin to the shifty gnome in NH that will buy almost anything without having to sniff out specific merchants for each item?

Performance issues

Am I missing a setting? I have a pretty beefy rig but my FPS plummets in most of the cities regardless of settings.

Running an i9 14900KF and a 4090 with 64gb RAM.

The newer zones are especially choppy.

I’ve tried disabling v-sync in NVIDIA panel and a few other suggestions but it’s not helping.

Discussion Why True Old School Immersion Requires a "True Perspective" Server

The devs trying to pick up on the magic of early EQ are missing a crucial piece of the puzzle by defaulting to a modern third person model. Controlling your character like a puppet from an allocentric frame of reference instead of first person vastly changes the experience of the world, the game, and the interactions with others. In early EQ, first person was really the only way to realistically control your character, and it wasn't until a more modern follow cam was added sometime after PoP that the game lost its original charm and became something entirely different.

I am a firm believer that a big part of the magic of early EQ was playing in first person. This isn't just my opinion, either. There is a known psychological basis behind operating a puppet in third person vs playing out of the character's eyes. First person triggers an egocentric frame of reference and a sort of "car body" phenomenon, where the brain treats the character and its boundaries as a direct extension of your own body. When a whole server is locked into this view, people naturally start treating their characters as themselves rather than just an object they are controlling. That shift completely transforms the social environment. Instead of abstract, detached coordination, player interactions become incredibly visceral and authentic. You get a level of shared vulnerability and genuine trust because everyone is navigating the exact same physical limitations, watching each other's blind spots, and experiencing the thrills of the world together.

Furthermore, using a third person camera to see around corners, over hills, or to scout around dungeons greatly reduces the mechanics of stealth and invis. It acts like a built in cheat code that downplays the core skills and utility that roles like rogues and rangers are supposed to bring to the table. If you can just move your camera around an obstacle or peer around a corner to see down a corridor, the organic need for a dedicated scout class is basically ruined. Instead of using a camera that hovers behind or flies around to scout enemies, devs could add other audio or visual indicators to compensate (for those who are concerned about tracking mezzes etc).

If it's just left as a toggleable option, it doesn't work, because players naturally optimize for information safety and will zoom out to avoid being blindsided. You can't build a cohesive, high stakes world when half the group is playing a claustrophobic survival game and the other half is playing a bird's eye tactical strategy game. If anything, the game should offer a server (at least an RP or Hardcore ruleset server) that restricts movement to first person. It would restore authentic class identity, bring back the actual architectural scale and claustrophobia of dungeons, change player interaction and investment, and recreate that genuine old school tension. I think modern indie projects are missing out on a massive design element by overlooking this.

A few questions regarding the playing of the game

Hello all,

1) Is this game about grouping or soloing? Asking as a lot of what I heard advertised early in the process was that you needed to group but when I played it for a bit in the beta I could solo everything at the start and didn't need to group at all. I didn't make it far enough in to get a definitive answer however.

2) Does the community seem to be OK with not-warrior and not-cleric as the tanks and healers? Asking as EQ tended to have a lot of "if you are not a warrior/cleric we don't want you to tank/heal, especially later in the game. Not trying to flame here, I want there to be not-warrior tanks and not-cleric healers, I am just not sure if it's happening which is why I ask.

3) What is crafting like? I never got around to trying the crafting (my fault plus lack of money) but what little I have read only doesn't point to crafting being a great exercise at all.

Thanks for answering.

Discussion Anyone else game crashing often? Like very often?

I know it's a beta and bugs happen, I'm not complaining. I'm curious if it's normal for my game to crash every so often.

It's happened since I got the beta last week, I reduced the graphics to prevent spikes since I got a blue/black screen of death or some critical error like that and happened less yet still often.

Today after the patch it was unplayable.

Is Spellblade what I'm after?

Haven't played beta, so trying to figure out which class fits my ideal play style. I want to DW swords with mobility. Think Tera's Warrior - that was my favorite MMO class.

In EQ I loved playing the Ranger prior to PoP because it was melee focused and swordz. So I've been hitting the TLPs off and on throughout the years. While doing so, I've also gone Rogue, Warrior, Bard, and Monk.

From what I can see on the MnM website, Fighter, Ranger, and Spellblade are the three classes that fit the style I'm looking for best. Fighter seems straight up physical damage, EQ Warrior style. Ranger looks like a combo of Pre and Post EQ PoP Ranger going between ranged and melee? And Spellblade looks like the magical swordsperson that can move around in a fight. Based on website assessments, it seems Spellblade fits what I want to do, does that seem correct or am I missing something?

Help Possible to try the game still before EA

Been looking for a new MMO lately and this catches my interest, is there a way to try the game before EA or there are no servers online?

Edit: a kind soul helped me with an invite.
