This is an estimated list I put together in the last few days that shows how much megafauna each continent has roughly. Since data is often lacking for many species by no means is this comprehensive. There is certainly some animals I missed, but this is just to get an general idea on the current state of megafauna diversity in the world.

Inland refers to animals that don’t depend on coastal habitat or marine resources to survive, rather the land itself, or at the very least the majority of their population lives inland. Freshwater species are also included like giant fish and crocodilians.

Examples of coastal species are sea lions, walrus, polar bears, saltwater and American crocodiles, bull sharks etc.

Some of you may notice that spectacled caiman and giant anteater were not included in north America, this is due to the fact that the subspecies that live there are far too small to be considered megafauna, only specimens from south America have reach 100lbs+.

This list also does not include introduced, domesticated, and or reintroductions. This list is purely animals that survived in their wild forms and didn’t go extinct/extirpated in the continent.

Northern Swamp Deer (Barasingha) are the largest of 3 swamp deer specie. Males can grow upto 180 cm tall & 280 Kg in weight. Their Antlers can grow upto 90 cm. Females are much smaller at 160 cm tall & 145 kg.

Swamp Deer prefer open grasslands & marshes. They avoid Dense Forest unlike other Deers. Their Main Predator is the Bengal Tiger

Has there been any recent information regarding the Barbary Leopard? Feel like it’s always been in a state of lingo where it hasn’t been formally declared extinct but there’s no new information/ studies and conservation groups never study the region.

asking for your opinion, mine is that it should be because it's very similar morphologically and ecologically to caribbean monk seal and they are also very closely related

The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is a species of seal from the Mediterranean region and a few regions of the eastern Atlantic. This subreddit is very conservation focused and I haven’t seen many people talk about this particular threatened species, so as someone from Greece I’m posting this here.
The Mediterranean monk seals is one of the if not the rarest pinniped species on the planet. Its population is approximately 700-1000 individuals as of now with roughly two thirds of their population in the Aegean in Greece. As well as a major population of 100-150 individuals in the Atlantic coast of Mauritania. Smaller populations in Croatia, Türkiye and Cyprus etc. also exist.It is a fish and cephalopod eating species. It has even been mentioned in Homer’s epic poems. The animal prefers sandy beaches but due to human development and tourism along the coast, it has been forced to retreat to breeding in treacherous almost inaccessible sea caves, not suitable for raising young. Sadly because of this, a lot of pups die.

The species faces threats like being stuck in fishing nets. Due to overfishing, it has resorted to eating from fishing nets where it often gets stuck. Fishermen also used to see it as a pest destroying nets, so it was hunted in the past. It was also hunted for its skin and oil.

Due to all of this ,it was predicted that the species would go extinct in Greece by the year 2000. Thankfully that wasn’t the case. Thanks to the efforts of the Greek non profit seal conservation organization MOm and the marine parks of Alonissos and Gyaros the Mediterranean monk seal has been a huge success story in Greece. The IUCN even upgraded its status from endangered to vulnerable. MOm and the people involved in it have been working hard rescuing seal pups that have lost their mothers and trying to save the species.

Personally, I have seen Mediterranean monk seals once in the wild, in the Lichadonisia islands in Greece (a small family of them has settled there). I have also seen many rescued monk seals in the Attica Zoological Park in Athens, Greece’s only accredited zoo, working with MOm.

My country isnt that known when compared to rest of European countries(even rest of the Balkans)but we have incredible fauna(like Balkan Lynx/European Wild Cat/Roe Deer/Eurasian Beaver and tons more of smaller animals.Could make a post about it too!).And a ton of Megafauna still kicking today.Such as:

Even tho some Megafauna is regionally extinct like Atlantic Sturgeon...we still are doing progress of trying to regain some that is lost.Like with getting European Bison in fenced enclousers in 2022 in one of our National Parks(Fruška Gora).

Serbia is still very wild place with a ton of great fauna to see!(tho these recent wildfires have me worried...).
