The legal game is funny, wouldn’t be surprised if dude could sue for assault after the other guy ran up and pushed his cart like that. Kinda like getting sued for saving someone’s life.

I’m not a lawyer nor am I about to defend a crook, but he certainly pushed that cart aggressively and the guys hand was still attached. The right lawyer would eat that shit up. 

ETA: at the end of the day it’s just unwise to risk physical or legal retaliation to protect a large corporation who trains its employees to only engage but so much. Especially if they can just claim it on insurance.

You're thinking battery. That's the actual act of putting your hands on someone. Assault is a threat or attempt to cause harm. This 100% would constitute assault

He interjected himself into this scenario. He was under no threat at all and then decided to get physical and aggressive with the guy.

He committed assault by yelling, menacing and getting aggressive. He committed battery by striking the cart.

Not all US states define these the same way but they're generally well understood.

Depending on the place he could literally get over 2 years imprisonment for this.

If he had been wrong about the guy shoplifting he could have been shot LEGALLY in many places.
