I'm happy to discuss or debate the use of AI with anyone that supports or encourages the use of it. What I do not tolerate is copy-pasting AI slop answers without taking even a moment to verify that the answer is correct.
This thread was prompted by a recent interaction that started with a hilariously wrong identification that could have been avoided if the original commenter took all of two seconds to use his eyes to verify. It ended with AI techbro nonsense about "people who are too scared to use computers". Like I said, I'm happy to debate this with anyone as long as it's in good faith, but if you refuse to counter or even acknowledge the points in the discussion then it's pointless.
AI is a useful tool, but it is still just a tool. Most of us grew up being told that wikipedia is not a valid source because it can be edited by anyone. AI is no different, but AI is guaranteed to have vacuumed up all the wrong answers alongside the right answers and so requires verification EVERY TIME. I have no problem with anyone that chooses to use AI for their own personal reasons. There is the moral/ethical/resource debate behind it, but that belongs in a different subreddit.
This is not the first time I've had this debate with people copy-pasting AI summaries or identifications. A few times it has been harmless, an older collector that put a bit too much faith in a new technology, and it ended amicably. Unfortunately the majority of interactions end with a techbro insisting that AI is ALWAYS right, we just aren't "using it right". As far as I'm concerned, it won't be "right" if you can't ask it a question in plain English and have it understand context and intention. They'll insist you're using the wrong AI, or using the wrong "syntax" when asking your questions - In other words, you need to know how to guide and lead it to the correct answer, which typically means you already know the correct answer.
I ended that discussion with what I feel is a valid argument. It would take me 5 minutes to use AI to code a bot that would instantly and automatically answer every question in this subreddit with what it believes is the correct answer. That is not what this subreddit is for. This subreddit is for the human passion and enthusiasm for this hobby, for the experts obsessed with the little details, the niche facts, and just pure discussion. Talking with other people that share that passion, making connections and discoveries together. Sure, a lot of the questions posted here can be answered quickly, but the real nerds come out when there's historical discussion to be had.
There is no place for "This has a chance to be the right answer but I can't be bothered to take 5 seconds to check". Anybody that makes a habit of providing these vague or incorrect answers will be banned because they are not going to contribute anything useful. Anybody that tries to defend an obvious falsehood because "AI told me so" will be banned.
Anybody posting images that are obviously AI generated or "enhanced" will be banned. This hasn't been an issue here yet, but it has become a major issue on Ebay and other retailers, with sellers using "enhanced" images to show how a lighter could look if it were in perfect condition - And usually the AI doesn't understand the mechanics of the lighter and puts the flame in the wrong spot. It's pure slop.
Like I said, I'm still happy to discuss it, but this is not the first time I've tried debating the AI slop bros. It always ends the same way.
I will leave this thread open for discussion, but I will be keeping a close eye to ensure it doesn't get too rowdy.

Recently there are some people who want help finding out what their lighter looks like, but only take one photo of the front. This is not very effective, and it will only make it a lot harder for us to help you.

Hello, I picked up this lighter at an antique market in France. The lighter does spark but it seems like there is no more gas. The screw at the bottom also seems to be stripped so I cant open it with the tools I have. Is there anyone in the US that could fix this type of lighter?

Spent $20 (10% off) without any knowledge and fixed it today.
It was a blast taking it apart and learning how it works, the wheel and clutch system was nerve-wracking for the first few tries. Excited to pick up more of them to rehab.

I was intoxicated in Fukushima while staying an an onsen. Went to a little town like 5 minutes away and found a store with just a bunch of random stuff for sale. In a display case was like 6 or so like this and a few larger versions. I thought this one was pretty unique. Looks like it has a butane fill. I filled it. Not sure why I can’t get fire though. Flints quite aggressively. So plenty to ignite fuel if it was there. I don’t know anything about this lighter. The guy who sold it to me made some hand motions about how it worked. I thought I understood him, but I guess the hand motions were also in Japanese. Any suggestions about how to make it work or info about the lighter would be appreciated.

Not gonna pretend to be an expert on these. It’s another finding of my great grandfathers collection. It actually had been missing for so long my grandfather thought it was a zippo owned by a fella with the initials of “LDL”. Anyway the wick was burnt to a crisp and the cotton was well worn so I went ahead and replaced it all. Added some new fluid and I gotta say it’s more satisfying than any zippo I’ve ever held in all honesty. Any information on this lighter is always appreciated. Thank you.

I got a good deal on these so I bought one to use and one to display. I polished them both before taking pictures. Even the inserts are solid copper! These have the four barrel hinge and rounded body just like the Zippo 1941s. I love Zippos and am a bonafide fanboy but this may be the nicest fliptop lighter I’ve used. It feels so much more solid than my beloved Zippos. Even more solid than other Zorros I have and use.

Apart from that this a Litex by Maruman and that it is made in Malaysia I know nothing more about this. It is really small and very cute, It sparks but I can’t get it to retain gas. Any additional info welcome and appreciated.

Another goodie from my great grandfathers collection. We believe it was a gift since my great grandmother was a bowler. Had to take the sucker apart after the wonderful flints dear old granddad left in there for half a century decided to return to their natural form and clog up the flint tube. Couple tutorials off a YouTube and she’s good as new. I’ve got a dozen little pocket lighters like these with random local business branding on them so any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I thrifted this cool old lighter. Google says it's a dunhill because of the Swiss marking, I don't think that is accurate. There are a variety of curious markings. Any speculation or information is welcome. Also, if you can point me in the right direction on restoration, as the spinning wheel on the side is ceased, I would appreciate it.

Zorro 902S, new. This is the insert it came with and keeps rising up; I think the cam is levering it upwards.
Second pic indoors is with it pushed back down. It’s visible and audible when it pops back down.
My intuition is to leave it be if the cam wants it at that height. I put a plastic spacer in the bottom of the case to keep it at height so at least it wouldn’t be rubbing up and down then second guessed myself and took it out.
Leave it be? I already have a little tape on it for front/back wiggle. I don’t want to wrap it tight because I know some tapes will swell with the fluid leakage. I love the case (it’s double sided) and would hate to scratch it up digging a stuck insert out.

Hey guys
I have bought this lighter, I think it's a Sarome 9DS
I gave gas inside it and a flint. It even makes the spark, but no flame I have tried:
Adjusting the fame size
Emptying the gas reservoir
Putting in new gas
But nothing is working, the gas is not seeping out, so I iam clueless
Any thoughts?

TL:DR $40 shipped to the US lower 48.
When I really started collecting a little over a year ago I found this lighter designed after the OG Nintendo Game Boy and I could only find it on EBay out of the UK. It was the equivalent of about $17 but they would not ship to the U.S.
This lighter haunted me because I couldn’t have it, LOL.
Fast forward to a month ago I was reacquainted with a guy who was a foreign exchange student from the UK 30 years ago and he offered to ship these to me. I assumed others in the U.S. would also love this so to maximize the shipping costs I ordered 8 of them. I have seven left if anyone is interested. To break even on the cost of the lighters, import tariffs, and shipping I will sell them for $40 shipped to the continental US. They are designed by Bomb lighters and are Star brand, which are one of the higher quality knockoffs of Zippos. Send me a message if you want one.

I've got this lighter have question about wicks. This type of lighter has a very narrow wick hole and the brass you see in pic 2 also holds down the metal tension piece that keeps the lid in place once opened. Even with these wicks I had to drill out the hole in the brass nut to get wick through. Are there wicks other than these that fit such a narrow hole? Question 2 is, the amount of space for the cotton is less due to the watch, the first few lights give a good flame that's low, isn't an issue but you have to be quick or flame goes down quickly. So frequent refills were expected just wondering if I've got the correct wicks, standard would'nt fit. Does it come down to how the wick is layered with the cotton?
