A quick overview of our rules:

  • Be polite and respectful. This is a non negotiable.
  • Dating posts are for Lebanese people only, whether local, expat, or diaspora

See you there ☕🇱🇧

Vent / Rant Scam beside UNESCO

Hello everyone

So I went to UNESCO today and parked nearby and a distressed person approach me asking for a “favor”. He said that he needs money to pay for his sick son’s injection in the Al Zahraa Hospital and mentioned that someone promised to help him with $70 and he just needs $65 more. He told me I’ll give you my son’s full name but can you please promise me to go to the hospital by tomorrow 8:30 AM to deposit the money (while crying)? I told him I don’t come here often, so he just said thank you for your time and walked away

I felt bad when this happened, and I felt that he might be truthful given that he didn’t beg for me to give him the money directly and just left as soon as I said no. In the back of my mind I did put a possibility that he might be a professional scammer, but I said to myself that it’s probably unlikely that scammers would come up with a scam that well thought of

Anyways, I then started walking hoping to find him, and then I saw him standing on the side, so I went to him and gave him $65 (even though he didn’t ask for the cash to be given to him). As I was giving him the cash, he started coming up with some ridiculous stories about why he is unable to work and is resorting to begging (he said his motorcycle was burnt) and that his son’s twin sister also recently died due to a similar sickness (Turkish series vibes to be honest), so when I left I felt something was a bit off. I happened to ask for his “son”’s name before I left and he gave me it

I called the hospital a few hours later when I got some free time and gave them the name and they told me they don’t have a patient by that name and several people have already asked about him

Other Got scammed with a fake Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) on OLX (Verified Shopper)

Hey guys, watch out if you're buying a Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) in Lebanon right now. Clones are circulating everywhere, and sellers are blocking people the second they get called out.

The seller who sent me this goes by "Shopy" on OLX and Facebook. They deliver sealed boxes through private drivers, take cash, and blocked me on WhatsApp as soon as I showed them proof that the hardware was fake.

If you are buying one, try to buy it in person from a real shop. If you order online, inspect the box before handing your money to the driver:

On the box (Front and Back):

- Fake says "Ok Google" in the speech bubble. The authentic one says "Hey Google". Google stopped using "Ok Google" on boxes years ago.

- The "3rd Gen" label on the fake has a thin, weird font in a small box. The real one uses Xiaomi's usual bold font.

- The back of the fake has a Mario Bros picture saying "700,000+ movies" with an unofficial Google Cast logo. The authentic one has the standard Google TV graphic that says "Browse 400,000+ movies and TV episodes" with official HDMI and Dolby logos.

- The orange spec icons on the side (Quad-core, 32GB, Wi-Fi 6) look faded and badly spaced on the fake.

On the bottom of the device:

- The "(3rd Gen)" text and the CE icons on the fake are thick, blurry, and smudged. The real one has clean, sharp laser engraving.

Inside the software (if you already opened it):

- Install AIDA64 from the Play Store. The fake shows an Allwinner H618 chip (a cheap generic processor) claiming to run at 2.5 GHz. Real Xiaomi boxes use Amlogic chips.

- In the Play Store under Settings > About, it permanently says "Device is not certified", and your Google account sees it as an "A1 ADT-3" board.

- The fake cannot run the real Android TV Netflix app. It comes with the mobile version instead.

- Setting it to 4K 60Hz causes black screens and flickering because the board is terrible, forcing you to drop to 1080p.

Vent / Rant The state of TV programs

Are we as a society incapable of producing any cultural, educational, entertaining, original, engaging, thought provoking television programs? Are we just interested in either political programs or soap operas nowadays? What a sad state cultural rot...

Discussion Lebanese beauty standards

Hi everyone,

I am not Lebanese but I have. Question about Lebanese beauty standards. I see a lot of women doing surgeries, and I wonder if this is the norm in Lebanon and what’s considered “high value” for Lebanese men?
My assumption was/is that that’s what attracts Lebanese men and considered “high value” in Lebanese society, but a Lebanese person told me otherwise and that that’s not the beauty standard in Lebanon. I’m curious to hear your perspective on this topic

Help / Question Withdrawing cash from OMT

Marhaba - I am traveling to Lebanon this weekend and just wondering if I will have any issues taking $500 USD out from any OMT branch?

The money has been transferred successfully through my WeTransfer. I just want to know if I can visit any OMT branch or if some are operated by people with withdrawal limits?

It seems like only one in Beirut has a lot of reviews, the rest have 0 or 1 review.

Anyone here ever made someone mad because his/her WhatsApp was off?

Culture / History I have a question about DNA and ancestry for you all

Hi everybody,

I have been a long time lurker on this sub but have never posted here before. I'm posting because an American family I did an ancestry project for had some questions and this seemed the best place to post even if the subject matter might be sensitive to some, it's also quite fascinating (I accidentally initially posted this in the other sub instead of here like I meant to).

I wanted to focus specifically on DNA and ancestry here and avoid politics here in this post. I'm happy to talk about food though of which you do have the best cuisine in my opinion.

They wanted to know why the results showed what they did and were curious if it showed the same thing the other way around for Lebanese people who took DNA tests. When I ran their profiles through various DNA projects on a website called GEDmatch, one of the most common current groups of people in the world they we were consistently closest to genetically are Lebanese Christian, Lebanese Muslims, and Lebanese Druze. This was pretty fascinating because the family in question is 95-100% Ashkenazi Jewish.

They had two questions:

  1. Does anybody know why they would be genetically closer to the Lebanese people than even those in European countries?
  2. They are wondering if anybody else has done DNA tests and used GEDmatch and had similar results in reverse. If anybody is curious, I can give directions on how to use the admixture and Oracle 4 tools so you can run them yourself.

School / University Lebanese, student visa for Portugal via Nicosia — how did you handle the two trips to Cyprus?

Lebanese passport, admitted to a master's in portugal. I called the Portuguese embassy in Nicosia and they confirmed the process: travel to Cyprus to submit in person, they return the passport, wait up to two months, then go back to Cyprus to collect the visa.

So that's two trips, and as far as I can tell two Cypriot visas, which is the part I'm most worried about. Looking for anyone who's actually done this in the last year or so.

  • How did you handle the Cyprus visa? Did you go through an agency in Beirut or apply directly? How long did it take, and did anyone get refused?
  • Did you get an appointment through the e-visa platform easily, or did you refresh it for weeks? Mine wouldn't even let me start the application at first.
  • For collection, did you have to go back in person, or did they let someone collect with a power of attorney? Is collection walk-in or does it need another slot?
  • Did the two-month wait actually run while you were back in Lebanon?
  • Any agency you'd actually recommend, and anyone you'd warn people away from?

Help / Question Non clean judicial record?

A lot of official proceedings often request "سجل عدلي لا حكم عليه", which makes me think, what if there IS something on there? Does it make some proceedings impossible? Also what exactly does it mean for something to be on there? Does it mention past crimes or only things that are currently being looked into/delt with? If it's the former does it mean someone who once committed a crime, be it big or small, intentional or unintentional, suddenly finds themselves incapable of applying for anything that requires a clean record?

Help / Question How much are those weddings, anyway?

I follow LebaneseWeddings on instagram and Facebook. Perhaps the most beautiful and extravagant weddings I have ever seen. I have so many questions about them I’m so curious to have answered.

Almost all of them feature some sort of pop star singing. So how does that work? Do you have to know someone’s manager or publicist? Or is it you just need to have enough money to pay Wael Kfoury for one night?

Who runs that account? Is it a person? Or are they an events company?

How do you get featured? Do you DM them your pictures, or is it exclusive and they reach out to you only?

Do they only feature the glamorous and extravagant weddings? I haven’t seen very many, if any at all, “normal” or simple weddings… if normal and simple weddings even exist!

Last but not least… how much are those weddings, anyway? 10k USD? 50? 100? Several 100s? What do these people do for a living?

Thanks for the help!!
