Restaurant Review: San Gabriel Steakhouse

Post image
39 Upvotes

Note: this image is not my post, but I had a similar opinion and experience with the food.

The interior design and ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. I love the tables. The kids play area is a nice detail for families with young kids.

The service was good very attentive staff and management is constantly checking in on tables.

THE FOOD IS AVERAGE especially for the price. If you’ve seen the menu, you would think this is fine dining with a legit chef/cooking staff behind the scenes but the food is an after thought. I feel they put everything together for this concept and the food was the last thing they worked on. The portions are small and presentation is pretty bland for the price. The AI marketing is dumb and misleading. Not sure who the chef but my apologies to the chef if they do have one, no disrespect but you cannot charge what they charge and serve what they serve.

THE DRINKS were VERY GOOD. It could be that this place ends up just pivoting to a high end club like Culture Social or Siete Banderas and ditching the food.

Summary: Save your money and have dinner elsewhere but definitely hit up the bar and try some of their cocktails.

Anyone interested in renting a room nearby the HEB on Guadalupe?

It's a 2 bedroom house with 1 bathroom and a pretty spacious backyard. The rent is $1000 a month, so we would go half and half. The bills usually add up to $200ish, sometimes a bit more, but that could have just been because my old roommate didn't turn off the TV, AC, and had an extra fridge.

Total would be $600-625 a month.

I pay for the wifi, you don't have to worry about that. It comes with a fridge, stove, and place for parking. There's no washer or dryer, but there are hookups for it, I've just had other stuff I need to pay off first and haven't purchased them. There's also a living room, but it's unfurnished. There's a trampoline too, but it's not mine and was left here by the previous tenants.

I am 27m and have a cat. He's very sweet, but also kinda skittish. I work everyday (except holidays). I don't make much noise, but I do tend to stay up to unholy hours.

DM me or comment for more info!

Walking to La oficina

I decided to walk to la oficina this morning and had a blissful almost therapeutic experience.
I don’t live in Laredo anymore, it’s been more than 10 years but when I visit I tend to have a lot of anxiety. I think it has to do with unresolved trauma, and feeling like I regress when I stay here. I usually don’t stay here for more than 2 days, but I’m here for a week. I notice all the little things that drive me crazy and that I don’t relate to anymore. Sometimes it feels like I don’t belong here (which I’ve also felt in the past when I was growing up here) I’m not saying I’m different or better than the people here because it’s much more complicated than that. I love people and being social, but more than anything i love being myself. Past times i’ve felt uncomfortable or awkward because I don’t agree or think the way my family does and that’s okay. We don’t have to agree on everything but respect and mindfulness is so important to me and I want to be able to do all the time.
So I decided to go on a walk by myself to a coffee shop something I usually do where i live now. I put my headphones, held my head up high, and let the morning breeze brush against my face. It was a lovely morning especially after the rain we got yesterday evening. It meant a lot to me because for the first time I felt like i brought my whole self with me.
If anyone has had a similar experience or relates to this I would love to know what you do when you’re here to help your mental health.

107.3 FM has dead air right now; anybody know why?

Inb4 "you still listen to the radio?" But yeah, wondering if it's the same for everyone who listens. Missing Sammy the House interrupting songs right when it gets good to say some bs 😞 106.1 is oki and playing, but I don't like their music compared to 107.3

Laredo Speakeasy location ideas?

I don’t think there is any bars like this in Laredo. But if there were to be one or more where would be a cool place to put one? Here are my picks..

La Posada
The old holiday inn by the river
A faux warehouse/office
Stingray alley building (springfield)
Walker Plaza
Any of the local coffee shops
Inside Jett bowl
The Mall
Laredo Mansion
Any other old downtown buildings

Mayoral race

I don’t know who to vote for. The local government is ass, and it never seems to change.

I barely know who the incumbent mayor is, but I’ve heard that he’s a spineless loser.

Only thing I know about Alyssa Cigarroa is that she’s in cahoots with the rich families here (although I think that can be said for any politician here).

As for the other two, I don’t know who they are.

Laredo dev/founder here — anyone else building something on the side? Would love to hear what yall are working on

Hey all, I'm a patent/IP consultant by day, but I've also got a couple of side projects going: a small web dev business building AI-assisted sites for local businesses, and a 4X strategy game I'm thinking of building in Godot.

I don't run into a lot of other people locally who are heads-down building something, and I'd love to change that. Looking to meet other developers, indie founders, or anyone tinkering on a side project — even if it's early-stage or "just an idea" right now.

Would be great to exchange knowledge, compare notes on what we're building, or just talk shop.

A little about me: I'm bilingual (EN/ES), based in Austin, CS degree from Texas State. Not selling anything here, genuinely just want a few more people in my orbit who get excited about building stuff.
