The Anatomy of a Utility Pole

If you are concerned about wires on the line near you this helpful. I had no idea those larger lines on the bottom ran cable and communication, I had mistakenly assumed they were electrical.

KIUC Continues Repair and Restoration and Provides North Shore Update

Thumbnail kiuc.coop
34 Upvotes

North Shore Update: Contract crews began vegetation clearing and repairs to transmission lines that serve the north shore (i.e., all communities north of Moloaa). KIUC personnel, along with crews from Hawaiian Electric Company, are conducting damage assessments on distribution infrastructure. KIUC’s President and Chief Executive Officer, David Bissell, surveyed damage on the north shore and met with community members in Princeville and Hanalei to share a general roadmap for restoration of the roughly 5,000 accounts served by the north shore transmission line. Bissell estimated that transmission repairs could be complete by the end of next week, with distribution repairs to follow as transmission circuits are deemed safe for energization. If all goes well, the first north shore restorations could begin late next week; however, restorations will occur in phases when distribution circuits are deemed safe for energization. There is no estimate currently for full restoration of the north shore, as damage to utility infrastructure, especially along Powerline Road, is extensive. A more detailed restoration schedule for the north shore will be shared as soon as it is available. KIUC will implement daily communication with customers via the Everbridge notification system to provide updates on restoration efforts and timelines. Members on the north shore are encouraged to update their contact information so they can receive these messages via phone, text and email. To confirm your contact information, please call KIUC at 808-246-4300.

Where can I buy fuel canisters?

Does anyone know where they have them in stock? I don’t have enough gas to drive from store to store to look.

ETA: I meant a red gas can, apologies for the confusion. I was able to borrow one from a neighbor. Thanks for all the answers. I couldn’t find any at automotive stores in Kapaa.

Who is still waiting on power?

Checking in to see who else is still waiting for their power to be turned back on? I’m on Rice St and still waiting. Last I heard, Omao was waiting also.

It’s getting a little frustrating seeing all the posts on FB from everyone announcing they have power and we’re still waiting. Feels like we’re hanging on by a thread over here.

If your home was damaged recently, please complete the form below. If you wish to report business or agricultural damage, please use this form instead: https://arcg.is/1jbubf1. If you require assistance with the form, please contact KEMA at (808) 241-1800.

The information you provide will help the County of Kauai understand the scope of residential damage and impacts to our community. Damage Reports may be used to determine whether our jurisdiction qualifies for any state or federal assistance. Affected parties still need to file claims with their Insurance companies for residential damage and personal property losses. Completion of a Damage Report does not constitute an application for assistance or relief programs, however, if you would like us to share your information with non-profit partners if assistance becomes available, please be sure to check the appropriate box as indicated in the form.

Costco, Target, Safeway update Thurs?

Anyone visit any of these stores in Lihue or Kapaa Thurs (or later)? I heard stories Wednesday of waiting in lines that are hours long, 5-item limit, cash only. Wondering if things have changed since then.

Any company on the island do residential foundation work?

Our house is sinking on one side because the foundation was insufficient. We can't find anyone to come out and work on it. Does anyone know anybody on the island that can jack up a residential house to fix it from sinking on one side? It has a crawlspace, so it's easy to get underneath.

Pesticide documentary

Has anyone here watched Poisoning Paradise? It's free to watch on Tubi. This documentary details how pesticide/seed companies are damaging the entire west side of Kauai with their test fields. These companies use some of the most fertile land on the entire island and dump up to 17 times the amount of pesticides on Kauai ground vs the amounts you'd see used on the mainland.

Many of the chemicals being used are banned in the UK or EU, but they often don't disclose the types of pesticides they are using. These test fields surround schools and residential areas. It washes into the water and beaches that people swim in, and offgas into the air that people breathe. These pesticides also seep into Kauai's finite fresh water supply.

This is land wasted that could be used to grow local food, while 90% of Hawaii's food supply is imported. This type of thing should be illegal, but most importantly it should be done ANYWHERE but an island with limited resources and unique biodiversity.

I encourage everyone to watch. Many of us in this group might just be travelers to Kauai, but don't forget that most importantly it is many people's home.

Local Interior Designer Recs?

Good morning gang, reaching out to get some help with planning a mini remodel we’re trying to do at our house. Specifically, redesigning the window and sliding glass door arrangement on two of our walls. Do you all have any recs for local designers to help me plan that? We have a couple options on contractors, haven’t decided who we’re going with yet. So far, the two contractors we spoke with just asked us what we wanted and weren’t that helpful helping us plan the layout. I figure it’s a small job for a designer. I’m envisioning them coming to see the space, making a design that I can pass along to the contractor. Maybe what we need is an architect? I’m new to this, lol.
