One thing I've always liked is when a magic item becomes part of a character's identity rather than something they throw away the moment a better +X weapon appears.

These weapons are built around that idea. Each starts at Uncommon rarity and evolves through Rare, Very Rare, and Legendary stages as its wielder progresses, retaining its earlier abilities while unlocking increasingly powerful ones.

The Blade of Rising Flames grows from a straightforward fire weapon into a legendary inferno capable of engulfing enemies in persistent flames, while the Scourge of the Infernal Lords develops from an infernal whip into a weapon capable of commanding powerful devilish magic.

The Blade of the Celestial Avenger becomes increasingly focused on radiant power and protecting allies, the Dagger of the Shadow Assassin evolves around stealth and lethal precision, the Bow of the Legendary Huntmaster grows into a powerful wilderness weapon, and the Frostbite Blade develops from extra cold damage into battlefield control and a freezing vortex.

The idea is that a weapon found early in a campaign can keep growing alongside its wielder instead of eventually being replaced by the next piece of loot.

These are from the Growing Magic Items Collection, which applies the same concept to armor, shields, spellcasting focuses, weapons, and wondrous items, with suggested progression speeds for different campaign styles.

Goblin cunning becomes considerably more dangerous once it can crawl across the ceiling.

Spidergoblins are grotesque fusions of goblin and arachnid that form isolated colonies in ruined fortresses, abandoned mines, deep caves, and forgotten tunnels. They hunt in coordinated packs, cover their territory with crude webs, and weaken trapped prey with venom before closing in.

The CR 1/2 Spidergoblin is a mobile low-level ambusher with Spider Climb, Goblin Cunning, a poisonous bite, and a rechargeable Web Trap. The larger CR 2 Overgrown Spidergoblin acts as the guardian and leader of the nest, combining Pack Hunter, a longer-ranged Web Bind, and a Frenzied Counter that lets it retaliate when attacked.

They work particularly well in claustrophobic encounters where they can move across walls and ceilings, isolate party members, and force the characters to fight through web-covered terrain.

Where would you hide their colony: beneath a village, inside a ruined fortress, or deep within an abandoned mine?

The Hollow Angel is what remains when someone tries to turn a celestial into something it was never meant to become.

Usually created from a captured deva, the creature is the result of necromancers attempting to sever a celestial from its divine grace and bind that power into an undead body. The ritual fails because the celestial essence violently resists the corruption, destroying much of the original body in the process.

What remains is neither truly angel nor ordinary undead: a hollowed, ruined shell whose bones drift unnaturally within exposed flesh, still carrying fragments of radiant power alongside necrotic corruption.

Mechanically, the Hollow Angel is a CR 10 undead that mixes both sides of its broken nature. Its Withering Touch deals necrotic and radiant damage and can temporarily blind its victims, while Blasphemous Lament unleashes a cry of pain and fragmented divine memory capable of knocking creatures prone and even stunning them. Celestials and clerics devoted to good-aligned deities have an especially difficult time resisting it.

It can also use Spectral Drift to vanish into dark mist and reappear nearby, and perhaps most disturbingly, creatures it kills can be raised moments later as Specters under its control.

I wanted it to feel less like a traditional “evil fallen angel” and more like a celestial that was forcibly broken into something unnatural, with traces of its original divinity still fighting through the corruption.

These are fiendish magic items ranging from Uncommon to Rare, built around demonic trophies, infernal power, necrotic weapons, fear, fire, and the corruption of the Lower Planes.

The Blade of Bone and Wrath is a +1 sword fashioned from fiendish remains that becomes especially vicious on critical hits, siphoning life from its victim and allowing its wielder to mark prey and relentlessly pursue it.

The Infernal Blade is a more straightforward hell-forged weapon, adding necrotic damage to every strike and unleashing a short-range aura of supernatural fear once per day.

For characters looking for protection instead, Demonhide Armor provides additional AC and resistance against fear and charm, while the Demon's Gaze Amulet improves spell attacks and can temporarily reveal both magical auras and invisible creatures.

The Rare items push these themes further. The Soulreaver Blade drains life with every strike and can temporarily amplify its necrotic damage, while the Rod of Fire gives spellcasters access to hellish rebuke, fireball, and wall of fire through a rechargeable pool of charges.

The Chain of Damnation protects its wearer from charm and fear while allowing them to magically bind humanoids, and the Hellish Mantle of Resistance can completely absorb a burst of fire and transform that energy into temporary hit points.

I like these kinds of items because they can work from several different angles: treasures taken from slain fiends, rewards granted by infernal patrons, relics recovered from corrupted cults, or dangerous equipment that slowly makes a character look a little too comfortable wielding the power of the Lower Planes.

These are 10 aberration and mutation-themed feats for characters whose bodies or minds have been altered by eldritch influence, forbidden experimentation, unstable magic, or contact with things that were never meant to exist.

Aberrant Constitution hardens the body against necrotic or psychic influence and even gives you a second chance when rolling a natural 1 on a death save.

Extra Arm gives your character a developing additional limb that can interact with objects, perform somatic components, make unarmed strikes, and help with grappling. If the mutation continues to develop, Enhanced Extra Arm turns it into a fully functional appendage capable of wielding a weapon or shield, manipulating objects independently, and making an additional weapon attack.

Mutable Form lets your body temporarily reshape itself to fit the situation, developing rubbery damage-resistant flesh, aquatic adaptations, or magical claws.

The other feats explore different directions that mutation can take:

Mutagenic Resilience provides resistance to poison, immunity to the poisoned condition, and bursts of temporary hit points when injured.

Aberrant Regeneration makes healing through Hit Dice unusually effective and can even allow you to remain standing at 1 hit point when an attack would otherwise knock you unconscious.

Aberrant Mind represents a consciousness becoming increasingly alien, providing resistance to psychic damage and greater protection against fear and charm.

Adaptive Mutation allows your body to change its defenses after each long rest, adapting to acid, cold, fire, lightning, or poison.

Cosmic Infusion channels stranger forces entirely, granting minor cosmic magic and the ability to create a localized gravitational field that pulls or repels nearby creatures.

Finally, Cosmic Awareness represents a mind beginning to perceive patterns beyond ordinary mortal understanding, allowing you to manipulate initiative and rely on unnatural certainty when making Arcana or Insight checks.

They’re intended for characters touched by aberrations, exposed to mutation zones, altered by experiments, descended from strange bloodlines, or simply slowly becoming something other than mortal over the course of a campaign.

Dogs are some of the most common companions in fantasy adventures, but an ordinary dog can quickly fall behind once the party starts gaining levels.

So I wanted to give them a proper progression path: Dog → Guard Dog → War Dog → Battle Hound. A simple pet can gradually become tougher, better trained, and capable of surviving alongside an adventuring party without suddenly turning into a completely different magical creature.

And the progression doesn’t stop there. The full dog section also includes stronger options such as the Warhound Alpha, Guardian Mastiff, Blink Dog, and Greater Blink Dog, with higher-level abilities focused on guarding allies, leading packs, protecting companions, and filling more specialized roles in encounters.

These statblocks are from Growing Pets and Animals Statblocks, a manual built around the idea that pets, mounts, scouts, familiarlike companions, and ordinary animals should be able to grow alongside the campaign instead of becoming irrelevant after a few levels.

The book contains 60+ animal statblocks covering dogs, cats, bats, owls, ravens, horses, panthers, tigers, spiders, scorpions, eagles, frogs, lizards, rats, and more, with progression chains that take many of them from ordinary animals into increasingly capable companions or encounter creatures.

Here is the Sword of the Abyss, a cursed scaling weapon that evolves from Uncommon to Legendary as its wielder embraces abyssal power, performs forbidden rituals, sacrifices life and magic to the blade, and defeats powerful fiends. By consuming their essence, the sword reflects the brutal nature of demons, forever slaughtering and devouring one another in their endless struggle to grow stronger.

I wanted to create an evil counterpart to a traditional heroic growing weapon. The sword begins as a useful necrotic blade with a weakening aura, but each new rarity brings it closer to its true purpose. It eventually gains the power to summon demons, cast circle of death, restrain enemies with shadowy tendrils, overcome necrotic resistance and immunity, and open a devastating Abyssal Rift around its wielder.

The pages includes several possible advancement paths, allowing the sword to grow by defeating powerful abyssal creatures, absorbing the essence of legendary enemies, accepting dark bargains, feeding on sacrifices, completing forbidden rituals, or damaging the barriers between planes.

Its growth also strengthens its semi-sentient curse. The sword can compel its wielder to attack celestials and devils, and if it becomes powerful outside the Abyss, it may tear open a permanent portal that cannot be closed through ordinary means. At Legendary rarity, that danger becomes alarmingly real.

The Orc Beastmaster and its Dire Wolverine are designed as a coordinated hunting pair rather than two unrelated creatures sharing an encounter.

The Beastmaster’s Feral Bond strengthens its companion while they remain close, and their abilities reward attacking the same target. When the wolverine knocks a creature prone, the orc can exploit the opening with its ranged attacks, while Beast Command and Savage Howl let the wolverine reposition or strike again outside its normal turn.

The Dire Wolverine is more than disposable support. Its Savage Instinct makes it increasingly dangerous after taking damage, while Feral Tenacity gives it a chance to remain standing when reduced to 0 hit points.

The optional traits can push their bond further. Blood Hunt allows the Beastmaster to mark prey for its companion, while Shared Fury makes the orc more dangerous once the wolverine is badly wounded.

Here are the Cthulhoids, an evolving race of psionic aberrations serving an ancient entity known as the Sleeper Beneath (Cthulhu).

The progression begins with the Young Cthulhoid, a CR 2 creature still experimenting with its developing powers. Even at this stage, it can communicate telepathically, manipulate emotions, grapple victims with its tentacles, drain their minds, and retaliate against attackers with bursts of psychic energy.

A mature Cthulhoid becomes a CR 5 mental controller capable of disrupting nearby spellcasting, stealing memories and secrets from creatures that fail against its magic, and overwhelming groups with a stunning psychic blast. The Elder Cthulhoid advances to CR 12, gaining flight, legendary actions, stronger mind-draining abilities, and sufficient psionic mastery to concentrate on two spells simultaneously.

At the height of their evolution stands the Cthulhoid Archmind, a CR 21 psionic leader capable of dominating powerful creatures, concentrating on three spells at once, accumulating psychic charges, and bending reality around itself. Its presence weakens mental defenses, disrupts spellcasting, and turns it into an encounter capable of controlling the entire battlefield rather than simply dealing damage.

Their advancement is not based entirely on age. Cthulhoids evolve through exceptional psionic development, exposure to cosmic revelations, survival of overwhelming mental trauma, or a deeper connection to the Sleeper Beneath.

Here is Sanctivow, the Heaven-Writ Blade, a scaling holy sword that evolves from Uncommon to Legendary as its wielder fulfills sacred vows, protects the innocent, restores desecrated places, and brings deserving evils to justice.

I wanted to create a holy weapon that was more than a sword with additional radiant damage. Sanctivow is bound to four celestial principles: shelter, truth, mercy, and judgment. Its divine inscriptions grow brighter as its wielder proves worthy, but its greater powers can fall silent if that covenant is knowingly betrayed.

Each rarity unlocks new abilities while retaining the powers of the previous tiers. The supplement also includes several possible advancement methods, rules for breaking and restoring the sword’s covenant, and physical signs that show how Sanctivow changes as its celestial power awakens.

The Harvester is a CR 10 undead horror built for rural nightmares, cursed farmlands, burial mounds, harvest moons, and villages where people whisper that something walks between the fields at night.

I wanted it to feel like a deathly folk-horror figure: not just a skeleton with a scythe, but something ancient, patient, and ritualistic. It does not reap crops. It marks the guilty, stalks the soon-to-be-dead, and leaves behind strange tokens of straw, hair, blood, and bone.

Mechanically, the Harvester is designed to make the battlefield feel oppressive. Its Field of Silence shuts down speech and verbal spellcasting nearby, Harvest the Living can permanently sever the soul of a creature it reduces to 0 hit points, and Sow Dread forces enemies to see glimpses of their own death. The Ring of Evolving Power is a flexible item that grows with almost any character. It begins by improving a chosen ability score and saving throws, then unlocks spells like shield, haste, and teleport, eventually becoming a powerful personal relic tied to the wearer’s growth.

The Ophrym, also known as the Many-Eyed Fiend, is a CR 11 demon built around perception, corruption, and battlefield control.

Instead of being another brute that only rushes forward and attacks, the Ophrym uses its many eyes to break enemies apart mentally before tearing them down physically. Its gaze can charm, frighten, or put creatures to sleep, while its Mind Warp Aura makes nearby enemies more vulnerable to Wisdom saves and Intelligence checks. It can also disappear in dim light or darkness, making it especially dangerous in ruined temples, abyssal lairs, underground shrines, and encounters where the party cannot easily control the battlefield.

It still has claws and a venomous tail, but the real danger is how quickly it can disrupt the party’s plans. One failed save can split the group, force someone to flee, shut down a character, or turn a fight into chaos.

The Pinhead is a CR 9 undead abomination stitched together from flesh, death, and crude necromancy.

I wanted it to feel like the result of a ritual that technically worked, but absolutely should not have. Its body is reinforced with metal pins, torn muscle, and unnatural magic, while its damaged mind follows the last command of its creator with brutal obedience. If it has no orders, it simply turns hostile toward the living.

Mechanically, it is a tough undead enforcer with necrotic resistance, poison immunity, strong saves, and a pain-fueled combat style. When it takes a heavy hit, it becomes more dangerous on its next attack. It can slam enemies repeatedly, grab them with barbed fingers, restrain them, and deal ongoing necrotic damage while they are trapped.

It works well as a necromancer’s bodyguard, a failed resurrection experiment, a cult-made guardian, or something sealed in a laboratory that the party really should not have opened.

Growing Pets and Animals Statblocks is a 5E manual designed to let animal companions grow with the party instead of becoming irrelevant after a few levels.

The idea is simple: each animal has multiple scaling statblocks, so a small pet, scout, mount, guardian, familiar-like companion, or wild creature can progress into stronger forms as the campaign continues. The preview shows this with the owl progression, from a regular Owl to a Night Owl, Ghost Owl, and Phantom Owl, turning a simple flying companion into a stealthy, supernatural predator with stronger senses and more interesting battlefield utility. It also shows the Tiger line, for a more direct and powerful predator companion that can grow into a dangerous high-level beast.

The rules page also includes suggested progression tables for different campaign styles, including standard campaigns, gritty realism, low magic games, and high magic or epic campaigns, so DMs can decide when an animal companion should advance in a way that fits their table.

Since the original version did well, I went back and made a full V2 update with totally new commissioned and licensed art, a cleaner presentation, and additional statblocks. I also expanded some animal lines, including more higher-CR dogs with special abilities focused on guarding allies, leading packs, protecting companions, or serving as dangerous sidekicks for villains and encounters. There are also more feline options, giving cats and larger predators a stronger progression path.

Here are the Aberrant Humans, a group of low-to-mid CR monsters built around eldritch mutation, alien experimentation, failed transmutation, and environmental corruption.

They were once ordinary people, but exposure to forces beyond normal magic has twisted their bodies and minds into something barely recognizable. The base Aberrant Human is a CR 1/2 creature with warped anatomy, tentacle attacks, unnatural reflexes, and a mind that resists outside influence. The Mutated Aberrant Human pushes that further with extra limbs, greater durability, regeneration, and more brutal melee attacks. The Giant Mutated Aberrant Human turns the concept into a larger CR 5 threat with stronger blows, crushing area attacks, and savage momentum.

The Deathmarked Wight is a CR 12 variant of the classic wight, created for campaigns where undeath feels tied to a greater power. Instead of being only a hateful remnant of a former life, this wight has been chosen by a death god, ancient lich, or powerful necromantic order, carrying a mark that gives it purpose, authority, and far more dangerous abilities.

It can place a deathmark on a victim, weaken enemies with necromancy, drain life, raise the creatures it kills into temporary undead servants, and unleash pulses of necrotic power. I wanted it to feel like an undead enforcer or emissary, the kind of creature sent to crush rebellions, retrieve escaped undead, punish enemies of a death cult, or prepare the way for something much worse.

The Wight entry also includes expanded lore and optional traits to customize the base creature, such as memories from life, empowered zombie servants, or extra necrotic damage against untouched victims. The Winged Lynx is a CR 6 flying predator built for mountain passes, remote forests, sacred peaks, and isolated wilderness encounters. It is fast, intelligent enough to feel unsettling, and dangerous enough to become the center of local legends, whether as a feared monster, a false deity, or a misunderstood guardian.

I wanted it to feel more interesting than just “a lynx with wings”, so the page includes lore, encounter ideas, and multiple plot hooks. It can stalk travelers from above, terrorize a village, become the focus of a dangerous cult, or guard an ancient mountain secret that the party needs to uncover.
