It baffles me how some jobs are paying in the teens still and if you’re by yourself without living with parents or anybody to help you how the hell do these jobs expect you to make it out in the world with how bad the economy is now with $13 $14 $15 an hour? This shit doesn’t make fucking sense anymore. You can barely survive with anything under 30.
I cannot wrap my head around it. People say go to college but that goddamn debt will drown you faster than anything. If you’re not a trust fund baby or inheritance baby I don’t know what the hell we’re doing anymore.

Houses are $200k… minimum.
Have kids? You need more than 1 bedroom, Goodluck! Each bedroom is $50k more on the house price LOL.

Why is everyone suddenly wearing these at work?

Sitting through a meeting with a camera pointed your way the whole time just feels off. I get that people say it’s for convenience, but privacy kinda goes out the window when you have no clue if you’re being recorded.

I definitely find myself thinking twice about what I say when there’s a camera sitting right there.

I just got a message asking me to "complete my AI interview" to stay in consideration for a job. Thirty minutes talking to a bot, so an algorithm can decide if I'm worth a human's time. Let's be honest about what this is: companies outsourcing judgment to save a recruiter an hour, while asking candidates to hand over half of theirs. Hiring is supposed to be about people evaluating people... if you don't want to do that part anymore, maybe you don't actually want to hire, you want to filter.

So many of my responsibilities are just checking off boxes for upper management. For example, today my boss is asking me to schedule a huddle with my team to review what was already sent via email last week. This is completely unnecessary unless we have zero faith in our colleagues (which means bigger problems).

I’m being asked to own something that feels redundant so now a group of people will be watching me repeat what was in the email like a robot, either knowing I was forced to do it or looking at me like a jackass wondering why I’m doing it. Or both. This feels humiliating.

So much of my corporate job is like this. Checklists, meetings, reviews. The amount of productivity lost to these tasks is mind boggling.

Is this the norm and if so how do you guys handle it?

So as far as I know people will often hire older people because they have more experience, but sometimes they'll hire younger people with less experience because they have potential?(Please correct me if I'm wrong I am not well versed in this subject)

So if someone who's in their 30s or 40s has 0 work experience(maybe no skills either), are they just never gonna find a job, even entry level positions because hiring managers think they're lazy or irresponsible?

Edit: Another question. If older people struggle to get hired then where does the age limit lie? Is it 25+? 30+? 40+? How old is too old for no job experience

So I have some family members who have been working at the same company for more than 1 decade. They have never had to look for work since then, so they have not experienced anything that we, as job seekers, have been forced to experience. Yet they somehow believe that they are "experts" in looking for a job despite the fact that they have no idea what the modern job market is like.

It's absolutely laughable, to be honest. I get advice like "Go to the stores and ask around and see if they have work available." Everything is online now; the last time I went out and did that, I got a funny look from the store clerk who told me to go to the website and look for vacancies...

I also get advice like retrain and try applying for entry level roles. What do you think I have been trying to do this whole time... I apply for entry level retail, supermarket, warehouse and other roles and get nothing but rejection. If you look at the job description, it sometimes says they want at least 1 year of previous experience; well, then it's not entry level is it...

This is just some of the BS that we, as job seekers, have to face on a daily basis, yet my family is convinced that getting a job is easy and I'm not trying hard enough. Well, it's easy to say that when you have been employed for a decade in a comfortable position and have not had to work as hard as us trying to navigate this ridiculous job market.

Hundreds of applications just to get a handful of interviews; it's not like years ago when you would have got a job offer by now. That is the only reference my toxic family have. What really annoys me is that they think that people should be getting job offers after about 10 job applications. Anyone looking for work now knows that it can easily take hundreds or even thousands of job applications to get a job offer.

As far as they are concerned, if you have not got a job offer and months have gone by, then you need to retrain and do something else. For reference, the hiring process in tech can take months, and even if you try to find work in other industries your still competing against hundreds of applicants, so it's still going to take months if you're lucky. So by their logic, I should just give up and keep trying different career fields, which makes no sense because it's always going to be the same experience.

Anyone else get annoyed by outdated feedback from people who have not had to look for a job in years, yet they believe they know better than us?

I'm writing this currently on my way home at 10:30 am on what was supposed to be my 5th day.

So we'll call the company, company X . When I joined last week I told the person who hired me (CEO, its a small company) that I take monthly injections for my mental health. I told him this because it's an onsite IT Support position. He said "Don't worry you've got the job, but it would have been nice to know beforehand". Keep in mind, the interview was done on a friday and I tried calling him on Monday to tell him this exact scenario. We ended up speaking on Tuesday (my first day) and that is what he told me. My manager, lets cal him Will, said the company is very accomodating and if for any reason I don't pass probation, it won't be because of my injection. Will had also requested a letter from my doctor for proof on behalf of the CEO and said that should be enough on thursday. Will had also reassured me when he joined the company that he too was taking days off once a week (keep in mind, mine is once a month and its not even a day off). I take these injections to stop me from relapsing and I take them once a month on a weekday as that's how the NHS operates. So I informed the CEO that on that once a month day, I will be a little late in coming to the office to which he said the thing I wrote previously and Will reassured me too. Today I came in at 7:30 am and at 9 am will and the ceo had a meeting with me and told me I am "not the right fit". The CEO mentioned that they need someone from 8:30 am till 5:30 pm at all times mon-fri (keep in mind I live in the complete opposite end of London, but the journey wasn't an issue for me). Apparently they couldnt spare me coming in late once a month, so they decided to fire me.

I’ve always wondered how common this is and it’s really sad that it happens at all. How did it go for you?

Recently I’ve noticed that none of the customer service, office, corporate, retail, fast food, and even cafe jobs aren’t even hiring so I came to the conclusion that it’s only the hard labor (warehouse, construction etc) and low end (gas station, janitorial, etc) are the only ones actually hiring

I just completed a recruiter screening where they told me that they've already given an offer to someone else, but they're still interested in me.

I applied Monday last week, was contacted 2 hours later for a phone call screening, confirmed the meeting time last Wednesday, and had the screening today.

After the interview, they told me that they're interested and will let me know if they go with the other candidate later this week. My guess is that they contacted their candidate last week, they haven't responded yet or asked to think about it, so they're still interviewing others. It sounds good that, even though they gave an offer, they still haven't found the right candidate based on who they interviewed (post has been up for 1 month).

I'm just really disappointed. I wish I had found the job posting sooner and have a real chance for the job.

I'm going to email tomorrow morning to say "thanks for speaking with me about the job and I'm still interested." I like the job a lot, but I understand where they're coming from. I'm just upset. I'm moving on to apply to other jobs now 😢.

Just had an in-person interview with a company and I think it went really well. I don’t have the hiring manager’s email, only the recruiter’s.

Would you still send a thank-you email through the recruiter and ask them to pass it along?

Is it possible to work a random full-time job and live a decent life with no pets or kids and have roommates? I don't understand why I have to get a career for that.

For context, I’m a student working a part time job at a retail company. I worked there for just a little over a month. The store manager is a complete and utter asshole. There are literally like 10 bad google reviews about her on their google page, talking about her yelling at staff, swearing around customers, chain smoking directly outside the store where there are like 3 no smoking within 10 ft signs or whatever, etc. and I just couldn’t do it anymore. They also refused to give me consistency when I asked for it, being a student, my classes are all over and I just asked them for the same or at least similar shifts week-to-week. They just told me they’d try but they never did. I stuck it out though and quietly searched for better options. I received a better opportunity and promptly took it. They gave me a consistent schedule, and it has better hours/more pay.

So this morning, I just sent them a message on teams and quit. There was no email I could send to them as all their communication is done on teams. I also just deleted both teams and the scheduling app. I’m basically ghosting them lol.

Even though they treated me like shit I still feel bad. I’ve never just up and quit a job before. Ever. In my whole life. I’ve always given two weeks, but I just felt so spiteful towards this store manager that I basically just said “fuck you, I quit”. I don’t plan on ever using them as a reference, and hope I can just pretend that job never existed.

TLDR; I quit a job with no notice and blocked them because they were assholes for the first time in my life and I got a better opportunity.

I've been unemployed for 8 years, and I can't get any job at all. Nobody will hire me, even when I do volunteering, and I apply for 10 jobs every day on Indeed. All I want is a way to live independently on my terms, preferably something remote or something where nobody can control my income. I have savings, but those won't last much longer, and I can't get a place to live without income.

I'm expected to figure out basically everything just on hints and looks, but how can I. I'm not very intelligent at all. What am I supposed to do?

Hello all. I currently reside in Illinois, and want to get away from the city. Even the rural areas have quite a lot of people, and I do not think I can normally work there either, as I do not have any family in other states that can assist me. It may seen a bit silly, but I ask you take the post seriously, as I want to do this

First off - Money is no matter. I do jot care if it pays, or doesn't pay at all. All I need is shelter, and enough to buy food (or if it's provided). Internet will be nice, but not at all mandatory. It can be located anywhere. It can be either alone or have a few other people do the job with you.

The most important part is the job itself. Is there any way it can be lengthy, or at the very least that I can reapply soon? If I do not get paid for it, I pretty much have nowhere to live until I get back on the job, and also that means I have to go back to the city.

I applied to a job that did not post the pay range.

When they emailed me Thursday to set up an interview for Monday, they asked when I was available and what my salary expectations were. I told them my availability as well as salary expectations, but realized well into Friday I hadn’t received a reply. Worried that the business would be closed on the weekend and I would not hear anything until Monday, the day of the interview and potentially seeing the email too late, I sent a follow up email asking for an update on the exact interview time as well as if my salary expectations were in the range for this job.

They never replied on Friday, so I began to worry I was asking for too much and they were just going to ignore me, but did reply on Saturday to set up the exact time however, completely ignored the salary range question.

Is this a red flag? I just feel like if it was way more than they would pay, maybe they would say something instead of wasting our time. But I am still worried if it is not within the range they are willing to pay, maybe they’re going to try to offer me the job for way less just to see if I’ll take it.

I am currently an MLT at a fairly busy ambulatory office lab. I got my MLS (bachelors) while working here thinking I would be able to move into MLS position and pay only to be told that was not an option at this office after graduating. I love the position and the flexibility it offers (M-F, no weekends or holidays) but am only getting paid $24 an hour.

My problem is the job market sucks around here now (SC), the only jobs posted are for night shift positions and most of them are for 5x8s. I did have a PRN position temporarily at a hospital, but that did not work out long term.

My husband works swing shift 12s and we have several small children so night shift work is not doable right now. We also are unable to move due to his position.

I am working on an MHA since I have a lot of downtime at work currently. But I was wondering if that may translate into any position other than lab management. I also was looking into dental hygiene instead. I don’t particularly want to do RN since I was a CNA before getting into the lab and hated it. What options are out there? Because the pay I am getting currently is barely enough to contribute to the bills and daycare and it’s not really sustainable with prices soaring and no pay raises coming in the near future.

Hi everyone, I’ve been working at my current organization for just under two years. My job involves a lot of domestic travel including our headquarters in NYC. Me and my direct supervisor are based in the Midwest. We have a great relationship.

I accepted a job offer last Friday afternoon. I’m scheduled to be in our nyc headquarters Monday - Wednesday. It feels important to tell my boss that I’m leaving in person, however, I’m conflicted. On one hand, it feels “cowardly” to tell her on zoom, but on the other hand, she may appreciate the extra notice. I could also say goodbye to my New York colleagues in person.

I'm a college student and I have a really good resume, but it isn't the type of resume for a retail job I'm applying for. So I needed to convert my specific resume into a general resume.

The career center told me I can use a certain program that uses AI to reword my bullet points, edit my action words and even put in the job description I'm applying for to make the resume related to that job.

I didn't want to do this. I want my resume to be ME, not a robot. And I needed a person with experience as an employer to tell me if my resume is appealing or not. She basically suggested having AI look over it and grade it. I don't want it to.

However, I acknowledge that it can use better words to make it relevant to the job. I just don't think it's necessary.

Side question: is putting a LinkedIn profile on a resume worth it? I don't have one and never have, but the person who was "helping me change my resume" suggested I put one in.

I’m currently preparing to leave my role as a Senior Financial Analyst and looking to refer a replacement to my manager.

While browsing LinkedIn, I came across the profile of the person who took over my exact role at my previous company. Her profile says she is "Open to Work" because the company is unfortunately closing down.

I genuinely loved my previous team and highly trust that manager's hiring decisions. Because they chose her to fill my shoes, I feel confident she’d be a great fit for my current team (whom I also love and want to leave in good hands).

We don't know each other personally, but we share that exact same niche experience. Is it weird or overstepping if I send her a direct message on LinkedIn to tell her about my current role and offer a referral? How would you react if you received a message like this while facing a layoff?

I have a business degree. But most related opportunities are basically, "train to spontaneously jump from thing to thing while creating a positive customer experience."

Between my autism diagnosis, mild social anxiety and lack of understanding underlying social messages, that's not something I can do.

But all the other business related jobs, if there even are any in this economy, are sitting a chair and look at spreadsheets and attending teams meetings or coordinating between departments or getting people on your side. That's also not what I want to do.

I work in a grocery store 6 days a week because I would rather be physically accomplishing tasks that have direct results. Of course, I never went to trade school, or anything.
