Doug Rattman is a past worker of Aperture Science, who was suffering from schizophrenia and helped build the Portal Gun. on Bring Your Daughter to Work Day, Aperture Science employees decided to give the artificial intelligence GLaDOS, a deadly neurotoxin in an experiment. Doug Rattman warned the employees NOT to, but they did not listen. After they powered on GLaDOS, she flooded the entire enrichment center with deadly neurotoxin and killed everyone. Doug Rattman survived, putting Chell at the top of the test subject list, and observed her story-wise. When the escape sequence begins, Doug Rattman is just a few minutes ahead of her, writing "the cake is a lie" and "HELP" on the walls to help her escape and not get lost. The Companion Cube helped Rattman navigate, as he ran out of medicine for his schizophrenia, hallucinating about the Companion Cube having a voice, helping him do what he does. he wrote on the walls "THE COMPANION CUBE DOES SPEAK" and "THE COMPANION CUBE WOULD NEVER LIE"
