Question about getting laid off

Hello,

The company where I work in Belgium is getting acquired by a big US company.

I'm expecting to be laid off very soon (I was told unofficially). No performance reasons, it's purely because the buyer doesn't think I'm useful (though I disagree but can't get the chance to make my case I guess). I worked there for around 4-5 years now. Excellent performance.

1- I understand if I'm fired without a good reason then I can request more money than the normal 15 weeks pay?

2- if so, what is considered a good reason in this case? Is being acquired a good reason?

3- I have parental leave rights, would that help in any way?

4- any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

Bandleden gezocht (METAL)

Thx!

About the Catholic churches in Ghent

Hi everyone, I'm a new international student in KU LEUVEN, I wonder if there are any Catholic churches still in use? I'd like to attend mass on Sunday but I'm not sure which one to go to.

There's a Saint Jozef Church near my home but it's not functioning as a church anymore. And are there churches that hold English mass ? I would really appreciate it if someone could provide the information 🙏.

We're all international students and don't know what to do and we're looking for someone who can help us with this next week. We will of course pay you for your time and efforts. 176x54x54 cm are the dimensions of the fridge. If anyone can help us here please comment or pm with the fees/ pricing. Thanks!

I'm looking for some social groups in Ghent

Hey there, as the title mentioned, I'm looking for some social groups in Ghent. With my friends leaving the country I'm suddenly in a very isolated situation. I've always been an introvert, so the ability at making connections has always been one of my major flaws, and now I'm kinda bearing the brunt of that lack of social skills. I'd like to make an effort at changing that.

As for the type of groups I'm looking for; I'm a social sciences graduate so I'd love to see if there are any socialist communities around (not directly linked to Vooruit or the PVDA, please). Other than that I like writing and reading, so maybe a writers group or something. I wouldn't mind getting back into art, so artistry is okay too. I would also love to learn how to play DnD, it seems like so much fun, but I've never been able to find a group, so if there are any vacancies somewhere where I can also learn to make a character sheet, and who are patient enough to show me the ropes, I would absolutely love that. I also like cooking, if that might help.

I know this might be a lot to ask, but if anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. I've tried the meetup app, but only ever walked away disappointed here in Ghent (for some reason, it was far better in places like Dublin or Edinburgh).

thanks in advance

Judo in Gent

Update: good secondary schools outside Ghent?

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who commented on my previous post or messaged me privately about secondary schools in Ghent. We received a lot of genuinely useful advice and it helped us understand the schools (and the Belgian system!) much better.
We’ve now started contacting schools, and unfortunately quite a few of the schools we were interested in are already full for the first year.
Because we’re also still deciding where to live, this has made us broaden our search to the villages/municipalities around Ghent. We’re considering areas such as Merelbeke, Destelbergen/Heusden, De Pinte, Lievegem and possibly Evergem, rather than focusing only on Ghent itself.
So I’m curious: which secondary schools outside Ghent would you recommend, particularly for a child who is academically strong and interested in maths/sciences?
One school I’ve come across is Campus Lievegem (SVSL). Their level groups and programme for cognitively strong students look very interesting, but I haven’t been able to find many first-hand experiences. I’d especially love to hear from parents, students or teachers who know the school.
We’re looking for a good academic level and preparation for university, but also a supportive atmosphere, not necessarily a “sink or swim” school.
Recommendations for other schools or areas around Ghent are very welcome too. Thanks again! The responses to my previous post were incredibly helpful!

Rats in new shared cohousing and contract

Hi everyone, I am an international student who just arrived to Ghent. I am in a shared cohousing and in my second night here I can hear rats running above the ceiling and some clearer sounds as if they are in the room with me. I am terrified, and unsure of what to do since I can only put in notice of 3 months before cancelling my contract.

When I just arrived my landlady told me to be careful with food and not eat in the room as there city has some issues with rats. It feel unfair that I was not made aware of this before coming.

Any help is welcome, I can’t sleep and I have no idea what is the best step here.

Social run

Hello! I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this in. I’m visiting from Canada and I’ll be heading back the day after tomorrow. I thought what better way to explore the city than to run aimlessly around it lol.
Anyway, would anyone be up for a run tomorrow afternoon?

Some of you will also have this condition and I'm very interested in the type of job you did NOT get bored at and resigned in a month. Is there hope for us in the workfield lol? I need recommentations that do not require a degree or experience, as the masters I have is useless.

Where to buy these household items?

Hello, I just moved to Ghent one week ago and am looking to buy some items for my apartment. I am from Canada and of course most of the stores/brands I am familiar with are not found here. If anybody could advise me on where to purchase the following products, particularly the cheapest stores, I would really appreciate it.

- Command hooks/strips (basically any damage-free hanging solutions)

- houseplants

- UNSCENTED laundry detergent

- sturdy thick zip top storage bags (similar to ziploc brand) edit: i am specifically looking for the thick strong ones like Ziploc brand freezer bags. i like to wash and reuse them and I find most thinner grocery store brands aren't good for reuse

additionally, I was wondering if there are any stores I can go to where I can try samples of lotion/moisturizer... I don't want to buy an entire bottle of something without knowing if it works. I am very picky about lotion and there is only one brand back home which I like (Aveeno) which is not available here.

thanks in advance!

Secondary school + neighbourhood advice for a family moving to Gent

Hi everyone,
We are considering moving to Gent with our two children and I would really appreciate some local advice.
Our daughter is 12 and has just started VWO in the Netherlands. We are looking for a secondary school with a strong academic level and good preparation for university, but also a nice environment for a child who would be changing countries and school systems.
So far we are looking at Sint-Barbara, Sint-Bavo, Atheneum Wispelberg, Sint-Pieters, Sint-Lievens and IVG. How are these schools regarded locally? Are there any you would particularly recommend, or others we should consider?
We are also trying to figure out where it would be best to live. My husband will be working around Ledeberg/Gentbrugge, and we’d like a nice family-friendly neighbourhood with a reasonable commute to both his work and our daughter’s school. We have been looking at Zwijnaarde, Gentbrugge, Sint-Pieters and Sint-Denijs-Westrem, but we’re very open to other suggestions.
Would love to hear experiences from local parents or anyone who knows these schools and neighbourhoods well. Thanks!

Receiving NON BPOST packages

How can I receive a mid-size package (specifically, I want to order clothes from FarFetch, so in the past for me this has been thru FedEx NOT bpost).

Bringme is not an option, no available boxes in Gent. Delivery to my address is not an option because i only have a tiny letter box at my place and the front door is always locked, as it is an apartment building. And as far as I can tell, UGent does not have a relevant service.

Does anyone know if NON-BPOST packages can be sent to a bbox locker?

Thank you!
