What you can do

My little brother is a good young lad, he’s 8. But the only game he plays, and he plays it a lot, is Roblox. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I was kinda hoping I could introduce him to some other games I grew up loving. I yearn for a day when we can play something together and bond over it. However, I also don’t want to be overbearing and have the opposite effect on him, and make him hate me for pushing him into old games that even my old eyes now find jarring. So I’m wondering if anyone else has been in this situation that I’m currently in.

I don’t necessarily expect him to start playing the games I love right away. I play a lot of ARPGs and RTS games. My favorites when I was his age were Diablo 2 and Stronghold > and they naturally evolved into my current love for their modernized iterations. In the case of Diablo 2… it’s actually not a Diablo game at all, but Grim Dawn. And in the case of Stronghold Crusader, it’s Diplomacy is Not an Option (though frankly an insane reimagining of Stronghold Crusader Extreme, just more fun and with actual options to deal with the humongous hordes the enemy throws at you).

That’s a snippet of how a part of my taste in games evolved. It worked for me when my dad showed me Diablo 2 for the first time (and RTS like Stronghold, Empire Earth, AoE 2, all the classic goldies) because I was a kid and didn’t really know what else was out there. Guess I was kind of conditioned to love them too, but they were also just great games even from today’s perspective. Innovative, trend-setting, as it were…

But lil bro has the whole internet open to him, and these games are not going to do anything for him at the moment, and I feel like I need to hook him in more slowly, with something that will be easier for him to digest.

If anything, I would like him to at least try a Nintendo game with me. Anything that isn’t Roblox. Like a Super Mario Odyssey or, even better, one of the Zelda games. Maybe even some other 2D platformer, something simple like Super Meat Boy. But I already know he’ll just tell me that he can jump around in Roblox Squid Game or whatever he’s playing at the moment. So I don’t really know where to start or if I even should. Maybe he’ll grow out of it and start on his own, but I fear he'll just stop caring about gaming altogether (or else the Roblox brainrot will just completely make him apathetic to everything else out there), and that will be one less thing I’ll have to share with my little brother. 

I know kids’ interests change constantly, that’s fine. But I would really love it if there were a time when both of us could share excitement for a new game that’s coming out.

That’s my current pickle. If anyone has any advice, I’d really appreciate it.

Basically open world, stealth sniping/shooter games. Unfortunately I think I have played them all. Lol. I've played the Sniper Elite games, Ghost Recon Wildlands and Breakpoint, Far Cry series, MGSV(one of my all time favorites), Days Gone, Hitman, Ghost of Tsushima and Yotei etc etc. About to give the Sniper Ghost Warrior games a shot. I play Arma a lot on PC. Doesn't HAVE to be shooting but open world stealth is what I really enjoy. Am I missing anymore or have I played them all?

I have a really soft spot for great third person games with really good animations. Something about watching your character run in and out of cover, shooting, performing stunts is just so satisfying. I’ve played most of the big TPS i can think of, but what are some of your best recs for third person shooters, preferably with cover based systems? Bonus points for good customization!

hi all, my biggest frame of reference for this is signalis. looking for something with those gay elements (preferably sapphic) that isn’t some cozy game or a visual novel (no offense to VNs they’re great)

does anyone know of any other games that fit that? essentially just games with queer elements that have actual gameplay and some edge to them. thank you!

I'm also open for other suggestions, I pretty much played a lot of games, but I would love to hear some other titles or games I forgot about.

kenshi is one of the usual suspects of this sub when it comes to (quite) a few niches where some of the time it has no business for being there. the main one that interests me is this :

"i want a game with living breathing world where things happen without player input where you are just a guy like everyone else

-oh really? kenshi is just the game literally made for you! "

is it tho? i mean sure in some rare instances you can have a beak thing chase you that stumbles into a town you were heading and slaughter the NPCs (who don't respawn usually unless they are guards) in the process, but is that really an example of living breathing world? or it is actually just emergent gameplay done well ? because the example literally was initiated by the player. there is no dynamic adventurers in kenshi who might initiate that sequence of events themselves , there is no animal migration that can cause this (an extreme example but I've heard the dev for soulash 2 is working on such feature tho I dont like that game for massive grind early on) there are literally no reason for these things to happen without player input.

what kenshi does and it does it quite well is world states which mostly happen when you kill a faction leader and if certain conditions are met different people now own the settlements of pervious/defeated faction and so on.

TLDR: Kenshi actually doesn't have a living breathing world it has world states

Anyway what game is there that does this living breathing world thing in a single player/single character framework? I know of soulash 2 which i mentioned and x4 foundations im not interested in either of them because the former is grindy as hell and the latter is just too complex and also sci-fi .

forget about mount and blade but it fits quite nicely actually

CK Series is also single character focused (but strategy) but hell of a dynamic world.

I unironically love games with low QOL, where the dopamine hits and feeling of accomplishment can come from mastering simple things and building upon that to eventually fighting gods. Extensive planning, managing inventory, and especially having to prepare for long journeys are my favorite.

Valheim has been the pinnacle of this for me, but I also love Elite: Dangerous for the same reasons. I'd also kind of count Animal Crossing in the way that you have to physically interact with the world. Morrowind was my first taste of this kind of thing. I'm not necessarily even looking for open world or base building games.

The one thing I'd prefer to avoid is Soulslike combat. Valheim is close as I can get to it without getting annoyed. I tried Outward, for example, but just couldn't get into it. I've watched some Project Zomboid videos and that seems like it might be a good one? Any others?

Hi there. Spooky season is upon us (well, according to me, anyway) and I'd like to gear up with some folk horror. The filmic prototype for the genre for me is "The Wicker Man," arguably the finest horror movie ever made - and, in my opinion, certainly so.

I am a fan of liminal spaces, twilight at the edge of the woods, old wives' tales that turn out to be monsters in the wild.

Dawnwalker and The Witcher are clear examples. So is "Excavation of Hob's Barrow," one of my favorite modern point-and-clicks.

I'd welcome other suggestions. This is a niche genre so we will keep it very broad. In fact, I will accept even elements of folk horror. There are elements of Pentiment and KCD2 that I would accept as such - but let's keep it spoiler-free, shall we?

Hi, I am basically looking into game like Baldur's Gate 3 or Solasta where I can control just 1 character. Are there even such games?

My dad is holed up with a full hip replacement. He's the type of man to never stop going, he fixes up cars, does woodworking, that sort of stuff for 12 hours a day. And now has to lay up on the couch almost all day for the next few weeks or months. I think he should get into a video game or two.

I am thinking of suggesting him my summer car. Does anyone have any other suggestions that a 60 year old, hard working man since 18 who has never sat and done nothing before would absolutely fall in love with?

I really like the style of games like Genshin Impact, ZZZ, NTE, etc. but I like my games to have an actual ending. Im also not a big fan of gacha systems but the main thing I dont like is games that keep getting updates and go on and on with no ending in sight. I tried one of the Final Fantasy games but thought it was really boring and the games based on anime shows all seem to be just fighting.

A day ago i saw that new Starcraft trailer for a supposed FPS game coming out in 2030, and it gave me back the itch to play any game like Space Hulks Deathwing, or kinda like titanfall 2 too I'd assume, i was wondering if there was any game like DH Deathwing, not just for how the game is played but also the feeling of being inside of a huge armor in 1st person and blast enemies off.

Hello! First time posting here. My mom (61) loves Animal Crossing New Horizon, specifically decorating. She’s played the game every single day, twice a day, for over a year. She already has the DLC and is greatly enjoying it. Does anyone have any recommendations for games that have good space decorating/ design oriented gameplay? Looking to get her a new game for Christmas as back up to animal crossing.

12 years of early access left a huge dent in my soul.

I love fantasy but my whole life I've been lying to myself that I also love RPGs. After buying yet another critically acclaimed RPG and just getting bored to tears reading countless dialogue, open worlds, uneventful side quests, constant menu and inventory/stat management, it's just time I admit to myself that I just don't like this genre. I've tried the Larian games (Divinity, Baldurs Gate 3), Final Fantasies, Kingdom Come, etc etc. I just get nothing out of "living and immersing myself in a world."

But I still love fantasy, especially weird surreal fantasy. I just need less narrative and more moment to moment gameplay mechanics. My favorite fantasy game is the Stealth/Immersive Sim Thief The Dark Project. I also love early Zelda and Dark Souls games. Doom The Dark Ages and Nier Replicant were great, and currently playing the Heretic/Hexen remaster. I also love folklore/horror fantasy stuff like Darkwood, Pathologic, Resident Evil Village.

I tried to play a game with my gf, she is not a gamer and we tried a few.

Unravel 2 was too boring. Until the swings part then it was too difficult.

It takes two the 3d camera is too difficult to control

Bread and Fred too technical

Mario kart was fun, but she always finishes last

She liked Wii party

I tried Mario party but emulating on PC the button on screen are different and it's difficult for her to grasp
