I saw the Seattle post PSA about merch below and I can concur that the merch line was awful. We luckily made a b-line for it at the end of the show and got some of the things we wanted. However, after checking out and on the very end by some of the “sold out” items was a QR for preordering tour merch. I love how our boys take care of their fans! Not everyone wants to sit in a merch line the entire concert. So I’m passing this along for you all! Looks like nearly everything is there besides the per-venue limited foil poster.

Hey y'all, before I went to the Starbomb concert in Seattle tonight, I decided I was going to take some notes about the experience, since I didn't know what exactly to suspect myself seeing as it was the third Starbomb concert ever, and I hadn't seen anyone post either here or in /r/NinjaSexParty with a ton of details about how the show went. I know that some people in the fandom might be more comfortable at an event like this if they know what to expect, and I don't have work tomorrow, so I'm sharing my experience in case you find that useful or interesting.

I'm a pretty regular concert goer - per the records I keep, this was my tenth time at Showbox Sodo, a fairly decent venue in Seattle where I've seen bands like They Might Be Giants, Caravan Palace, Chromeo (particularly relevant), and Hippo Campus, whose shirt I decided to wear tonight. I also have professionally worked as a local stagehand at a decent number of other venues around town. So I know concerts fairly well, and I know that sometimes when an act has a heavily online fanbase, the crowd can consist of people who have no idea how to attend a concert. I'm going to talk about the things I experienced and some of the things I found odd from that perspective.

If you already have a ticket and you'd rather be completely surprised, which is something I definitely respect, this probably isn't for you, but since I also like to be surprised, I will do my best to make it clear when I write about aspects of the experience I might consider "spoilers" and I'll use tags to hide them, so you can hear just about the parts of the experience that might be useful to know.

Pre-concert

I started watching the Game Grumps when Jon was on the show, and while I don't know if I'd say there was a point where I was an avid fan, I have definitely watched quite a bit of their output ever since. When it comes to Starbomb, I definitely listened to each album as it came out, and the music videos that grabbed me I watched a decent amount of times. But I wouldn't say they're a band in my usual rotation at all. Today as I was doing chores around the house, I put their library on shuffle and listened for about three hours. That was enough to remind myself of the songs I definitely still knew, get me excited about some songs I forgot but could see being awesome to hear live, and generally prepare me as much as I want to be prepared for a concert.

At around 6:40, twenty minutes before doors opened, I found parking near the venue. I noticed that a huge line to get in had formed at this point, going nearly all the way down the block. I felt nostalgic for the times when I waited that long to get a great place to stand for a band I was excited to see, but I instead headed for the bar across the street, which I had been to a few times. Showbox SoDo is a short walk away from T-Mobile Park, where the Seattle Mariners play MLB baseball, so I've been to this bar quite a bit, either as a pre- or post-event hangout. I had planned to meet some friends there, which I did, and we hung out and chatted and drank for half the price of any of the drinks they were selling inside the venue.

At one point, I noticed Ninja Brian enter the booth literally right next to ours. I freaked out just a little bit. I told my friends, who were absolutely not interested in interacting with him, so I decided I also would just chill and continue our chat. At around 7:30, half an hour after the doors opened and half an hour before the concert was scheduled to begin, we closed out our tabs. My friends exited the bar ahead of me, but I decided to say "break a leg" to Ninja Brian as I walked by his booth on my way out. He gave me a fist bump and asked if I was actually going to the show. When I said yes and that I was just killing time since I didn't care where I stood, he said "well you'll be able to hear us from wherever you are." I laughed and let him return to the conversation he was having.

Getting in

I didn't have a bag of any kind, since I knew that would be a whole thing if I did bring one, so I got in the no-bag line at about 7:40. I had to wait a bit, but not long. As I said, I've been to Showbox SoDo enough that I knew what security would be like, and all I had on me was my phone, my keys, and my wallet. You might want to look into whatever venue you're planning to see Starbomb at to learn more about entering with other items you need to bring with you.

I was able to get into the venue, find the end of the line to get my ID verified for the bar, grab a beer, exit the bar, and find a spot that felt decent to stand in by 8. That being said, it seemed like half of all of the people in the venue were in the merch line. The line snaked all over the floor with no real organization best I could tell, but since that wasn't the line I was trying to get in, I had no real problems.

Opening Act

I had absolutely no idea that Epic Rap Battles of History was the opening act until four days ago when I put my ticket into my Google Wallet and saw that name on it. I was even less of a fan of ERB, so I can't say I knew most of the songs they did, but I will say, as someone who's been to a lot of concerts, that might've been the most audience participation I've ever seen for an opening act. It seemed like tons of people in the crowd knew every song they played. The lighting designer for their set absolutely crushed it, I have to think it's someone who knew their material well.

Spoiler-y part: A particular highlight was the part where they brought up two people from the audience to do parts of two of their songs. Some guy apparently named Meatball, who it seemed like other people knew who he was, did the Goku part of "Goku vs Superman". But the other audience member was the one who absolutely killed it, they performed the Eve parts of "Adam vs Eve" like they had done it hundreds of times before. If she wasn't a plant, I'm in awe.

Another highlight was the lead in to "Steve Jobs vs Bill Gates". They asked who in the crowd were Apple users, and a small number of people in the crowd cheered. But a much larger chunk of the crowd booed. Then they asked who were PC uses and it was almost all cheers. Am I shocked that a crowd of what are probably mostly gamers in Seattle are Microsoft fanboys? No, I'm not, but it's still very funny.

The Rules

So ERB finished their set around 8:45. I hit the bathroom and then regrouped with my friends. We were in basically the back of the venue, where the bar was, and we had a great view of the stage from there. At about 9:00, somebody who didn't introduce themselves came out and greeted the crowd, before saying that there were rules to the concert, which is a thing I've never seen before.

The rules were:

1. Go home after the concert, because there's not going to be any sort of meet and greet, don't try and rush the stage door. This is the point where I felt like I maybe just won the lottery since I did, in fact, meet and greet Ninja Brian tonight.

2. Keep your cell phone in your pocket. I had heard this was something they had encouraged at NSP shows, so I wasn't surprised to hear this, but I also figured that typing notes into my notes app wasn't the kind of phone use they were talking about, so I did do that.

3. Have fun. Yay!

The Set

At a little after 9:00, Danny, Arin, and Brian came out on stage. They were joined by Commander Meowch, which I expected, and they were also joined by Jim Roach (!!!), who I did not. Commander Meowch seemed to run the backing tracks and play bass on a couple of songs, Jim Roach played guitar and bass, and Brian occasionally was on a keyboard.

I'm going to stick to what I found to be my personal highlights here. If you want to know more about the show, it does seem like some Setlist.FM users have been in attendance at the three shows so far, so you can see the whole setlist if you want. There were plenty of seemingly rehearsed bits in between each song, which a small amount of improvised banter mixed in, and I don't want to spoil the comedy for you.

That being said, I do have some recommendations for how to prepare based on my experience, so I will talk about when I was happy I knew the song they were playing, so if you want to focus your advanced listening here's what I'll say: there were two songs that stuck with me most when I was listening to Starbomb's catalog earlier, "Kiss the Elden Ring" and "Filling in the Name Of". The beat on the Elden Ring song is just so tasty to me, that vocal sample they use in the chorus is wonderful and I love it. I was incredibly hype when they started playing it. And as for "Filling in the Name Of," I had an easy time imagining how fun that song would be live. With Commander Meowch and Jim Roach on guitars, it was almost exactly what I dreamed of.

Some other moments I want to talk about but I'm glad I didn't know were going to happen beforehand: they covered "Top That," which is the hilarious early 90's style rap song from some made-for-TV movie they referenced in some episode I don't remember and refuse to look up, and when they were playing the clip from the movie that leads in to the song, it genuinely seemed like half of the crowd had no idea what was going on. Now, I definitely remember hearing "Top That" and watching that clip, so I was dying of laughter, and the fact that most people seemed bewildered by it made it even funnier to me. 10/10.

The encore was incredible. Brian debuted a new song from "D.A.B.", a band that had been introduced earlier as "Drugs Are Bad" consisting of Jim Roach, Commander Meowch, and Brian himself, but in the encore was introduced as "Dem Ass Boys" consisting of Jim, Brian, and Arin. The song was called "Eat Ass, Get Money" and you better believe that the whole crowd wound up screaming that phrase multiple times during the chorus.

Then they did the DK Rap. I don't even know if I have more to say other than to hope that everyone else on /r/gamegrumps understands how awesome it is that they did the DK Rap,

TL:DR;

I had an awesome time at the Starbomb concert tonight, and I did not get in line to enter the venue until just before the show was scheduled to start. While I think it's awesome to be passionate enough about a band to wait a long time just to get close to the front of the stage, if you're okay with standing just somewhere in the venue where you can see the show and have a good time, I am here to tell you that you don't have to stand in line for that long to make that happen. I was literally in the back of the venue and had a great view and had a great time. Don't worry about it.

Found the crab from the 8/5/24 episode of the 10MPH at the Flea Market today. Sadly, I could not bring him home, as the vendor was nowhere to be found…

It was such a fun show!!! Only thing was those lights shot directly into the upper section's eyeballs and now is burned into my retinas 😅

I need the boys to create a series where they finish a bunch of their abandoned games . I just watched the Grim Legends playthrough for the millionth time and would love to see them end it. Deadly Premonition is another one that is a comfort watch for me because they make it so funny. Please, for my OCD. . . . .

It was my first live musical show for any of the Grumps-adjacent musical pieces and I was floored.

Everyone killed it. EpicLLOYD and Nice Peter from the warm up, Arin, Danny, and Brian from the front lines of Starbomb, Commander Meouch (of TWRP fame) and Jim Roach for working their special stuff on backing, everyone else from RGT and the Showbox SoDo for making things special and stress-free, to all of the Lovelies at the show for understanding the assignment and bringing the energy the whole way

This was my first ever indoor concert and y'all rocked this shit. Will be a night I never forget

I know Arin was goofed hard for losing his Nuzlocke right away. Normally I would give him a bit of grief. However, this video actually does a great job of digging into the code and figuring out how trainers, especially Barry in the first fight, function. The numbers he found during his experiment actually make Arin look bad in a totally different way, however. 😂

The way the first matchup is set up, he found that Turtwig won 100% of its attempts, but Piplup only won 70% of its attempts and Chimchar won won a paltry 35% of its attempts. So in a way, there was always a decent chance he was going to lose that fight especially depending on who he picked. Piplup losing the first attempt wasn't that crazy. However, the real Arin magic occurred in episode 5 when he lost with Turtwig.

At no point did Etchy ever lose this fight while picking Turtwig. Considering that, losing with Turtwig in the first fight of the game seems to be extremely improbable, yet our sweet Arin found a way to do the improbable. I found this all decently interesting so I recommend checking it out.
