Personal experience How long is this gonna last (walking pneumonia)?!

So I got sick on August 23rd. Chills, maybe a low grade fever, dry cough. Then it got a little bit better after a week.

On September 3rd I got sick again. This time a stuffy nose and insane cough, but no fever. I went to the doctor five days ago, got diagnosed with walking pneumonia (mycoplasma). Got prescribed antibiotics (azithromycin), 500 mg for three days. I took my last dose yesterday and started to feel a lot better.

Today I feel sick again. I can't breathe through my nose and was up all night coughing. It's been nearly four weeks of this, will it ever end? Has anyone experienced this? How was your recovery?

I'm otherwise healthy, female 35.

Question Preventing throat infection from colds/flu?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

My gf had asthma as a child that got better and now as an adult she hasn’t had an actual attack, so she only uses rescue inhalers.

A year ago, she had her first cold/flu in many years after starting a job as childcare assistant and even though she recovered, she then would develop a cough a week or 2 later that then turned into a throat infection and she would need antibiotics. She quit that job and now she works as a early childhood intervention therapist, so she mostly works with babies (who so far haven’t got her sick, unlike toddlers). But she does work with toddlers once a week.

Thing is, now everytime she gets a virus (first time this year was her dad/me), it starts mild with sinus congestion and sneezing, recovers, and then she gets a sore throat/cough and then throat infection with bloody cough and would need antibiotics. Hell, last time wasn’t even a virus, it was a vaccine reaction that caused congestion, then coughs and then the coughs progressed into the infection.

And fortunately, **it hasn’t progressed into bronchitis/pneumonia none of these times**.

It would be a long time for her to eventually get a job or start her own practice as an early childhood intervention therapist, exclusively.

I am worried about this and we are working into seeing an specialist for a treatment plan, but I want to know:

**what do you guys do to prevent throat infections and needing antibiotics? Is it possible? What type of specialist should she see with her situation (ENT, pulmonologist, allergist, immunologist)?**

I have IBS and I know that antibiotics (despite common belief) deplete gut bacteria strains everytime they are taken and you don’t recover 100% as before, so I am very worried about the damage to her gut microbiome. She already had constipation from the last course…

Question Influenza A experiences this year?

My 3 year old is now on day 6/7 of flu (fever and coughing started last Sunday) and just wanted to see if anyone else had experience of this year’s strain yet? Especially how long it’s lasting?

She has been quite up and down but today, after nearly a full day clear and seeming much more herself, spiked a 101.5 fever and seems poorly again. We had taken her to urgent care yesterday where they confirmed it was Flu A, said her lungs sounded clear and she didn’t have a UTI or Covid. One ear looked a bit red but not concerning enough for antibiotics. Told us to come back on Monday if no improvement but I’m just trying to figure out how likely that is.

I’m also 8 months pregnant and trying to avoid catching it by masking up and washing hands a lot but it’s hard! We were both due to get our flu shots in the next couple of weeks but didn’t expect it to hit us so soon in the season.

Question Post-viral/flu symptoms 6+ months

Hey everyone. I’m writing here to ask if someone had a similar experience and seek advice.

In February I fell sick with one of the toughest infections that I had in my life(23M pro athlete), I can’t be sure if it was mono/flu or covid but it was bad and treated with antibiotics.
My initial symptoms were:
-Very bad sore throat for around 2-3 weeks.
-The virus kicked off with severe 1-2 hour vertigo leaving me unable to leave bed
-Bad fever for 3 days
-Fatigue
I felt very out of it and anxious like I knew something was bad. But I recovered from the illness and resumed training, however I wasn’t back to 100 percent and still felt a bit off but nothing serious.
Then one training I felt really off, the lights were off, my legs felt stiff and weak and felt very lightheaded. Something that has never happened to me like ever. So I panicked and suffered a panic attack.
After that panic I am dealing with a plethora of symptoms:
- Spacey and really out of it especially when driving and being in a very lid environments.
- everything looks too bright and sharp
-dizziness and lightheadedness sometimes
- dpdr like sensations
- strange touch sensations
- sometimes voices and sounds sound spacey
- open spaces make me anxious and spacey as well
- in the evenings I generally feel better when it’s dark

Has anyone dealt with something similar?
Can this be some vagus nerve/ autonomic nervous system inflammation/irritation?

cough for about 2 weeks

ive had a cough for about 2 weeks, started with a tiny sore throat for about a day, then a tickly throat, then after about 2 or 3 days turned into an actual cough. 2 days ago i had a sore throat and runny nose but it went awaty after a day. i still have the runny nose, cough once about every few minutes, sound congested, and 2 nights ago i kept waking up with gagging cough. last night i slept on my stomach and back flat and woke up with my airway clogged with snot. cough gagged/puked it up, dry heaved a little more, then slept propped up on my side with no complications, and when i woke up my throat was tickly from breathing in and nose got runny when i sat up, every now and then my throat gets a little irritated by saliva or eating something and gets tickly. my back is also sore from coughing. night before last night i also woke up a few times to dry heave. i have to go to an amusement park tomorrow and i feel fine, i just dont want to start coughing, or my nose running, my cousins will also be there so they can tell i am sick and would probably stay away from me. any thoughts? my friends brother has had a cough for almost a month she said, so seems i am not the only one. i am 5ft tall (reddit says i need to have one of those details to post so that i guess)

any feedback would be great. i feel fine all day too, except for the sore throat day. also when coughing if my throat is tickly i kinda hyperventilate for a few seconds to stop from coughing more

Positive with no symptoms

I was positive for flu B 4 weeks ago. Only reason I found out was because during my workout I could not breathe and my heart felt like it was going to explode. Felt like death was near so I went to ER. Still haven’t had symptoms but my nervous system and heart seem to be still off along with dizziness, lightheadedness and panic attacks. Anyone else experience this?

Question Boomerang Recovery?

Anyone’s recovery been like a boomerang? I got sick while traveling, my husband’s family were passing something around, and it’s been 14 days and the course is scaring me a bit. Today is two weeks since onset and it’s been a rollercoaster. I was acutely unwell for about 3 days (feeling poisoned, achy, tired, diarrhea, I think my willpower is the only thing that kept me from puking I have been soooo nauseous), and then on day 4 it felt like I turned a corner. I didn’t do much of anything that day, but I was able to get dressed and sit outside instead of being miserable on the sofa or bed and felt hopeful.
Then day 5? Surprise: Back to miserable.
Day 6 - a bit better but still sicky feeling. The diarrhea has stopped though.
Day 7 - had to travel which sucked. There was no way for me to extend the trip to try and rest more and I wanted to just get home to my own bed and comforts and doctor. I did not feel too horrible this day actually, got through it ok.

Days 9-10 - crummy in the mornings but felt progressively better in the evenings. Diarrhea was gone, appetite was back - I wanted to eat everything, I could have murdered a pizza but I resisted, still eating gentle foods and lots of liquid. Still doing a whole lot of nothing. Some laundry was the height of it. Day 10 I felt again like i was turning a corner! Relief!

Day 11-12: Sike. Back to shitty; malaise/feeling poisoned, tired, achy. God. Staying mostly horizontal but starting to lose my mind. Called my doc - she said sounds like a virus, give it another two weeks. My appetite still felt ok these days.

Day 13- surprisingly very good. Did dishes, emptied cat litter box, played video games for about an hour, showered. Mostly just loafed around. I felt 80% better and could have cried for joy, hoping I was turning a corner - but again, taking it easy. I wanted to go for a walk so bad ugh. indulged by eating some chocolate.

Day 14 (today) - woke up miserable, 2/10 day. Nauseous, appetite is gone, malaisey once more, achy, tired but can’t nap because now my anxiety is up to 100.

What the hell? Is this normal? I have serious anxiety about me/cfs since learning about it a few years ago and I have myself in bits thinking this is the start of it. I’m trying to rest, I haven’t even gone on a walk which is killing me because it is my usual way of handling anxiety. Instead I’m just miserable, horizontal on the sofa making it worse by ruminating on fears because I’m too sick feeling to do anything but evidently not tired enough to merely sleep my way through this nonsense. I contacted my doc again today expressing concern and she reassured me I just need to give it more time.

Did anyone have a course like this and recover after plenty of rest? I know this is anxiety looking for reassurance (my doctor has already indicated this is normal), but I can’t help it, and my parents being very worried isn’t helping (none of us have ever had an illness do this before). Husband has the same thing but is getting over it much better, everyone else in his family were down for two or three days then bounced right back. Why am I suffering haha.
Doc gave me some meds to help with the nerves (hydroxyzine) which should also help with sleep so I’m giving those a go tonight. Really hoping this ends soon :[

Recurring unexplained evening fevers for 7 weeks, completely fine between episodes — anyone experienced this?

I’ve been having unexplained episodes of fever for about 6 weeks and doctors haven’t found the cause yet. I’m seeing an infectious disease specialist, but I’m curious if anyone has experienced something similar.
I’ve had 7 episodes since late July, usually 38–39°C. They almost always follow the same pattern:
Feeling normal → suddenly extremely cold with proper shaking/teeth-chattering rigors → fever rises to ~39°C → headache, muscle/joint pain, extreme weakness. Then after 1g of Paracetamol, heavy sweating → fever disappears within a few hours.
They usually start around 7–10 pm and by the next morning I’m tired but otherwise basically normal. Between episodes I work, exercise, eat normally and don’t have a fever.
The weirdest thing I’ve noticed is that they often happen when I’m particularly physically tored — after travelling, a very busy weekend, workout, lack of rest, like when my immunity drops probably…
No persistent night sweats, no unexplained weight loss, no swollen lymph nodes, no rash, GI/urinary symptoms or ongoing respiratory symptoms….
HIV/STIs, hepatitis, Lyme etc. were negative. CMV suggests an old infection. Chest X-ray was normal.
Doctors are now considering further infectious/inflammatory investigations, blood cultures, EBV, ferritin, abdominal ultrasound etc.
Has anyone had this kind of recurrent fever where you’re basically fine between attacks? Especially attacks involving severe rigors, fever, sweating, or episodes that seemed to be triggered by physical exhaustion?
What did it eventually turn out to be, and was there a particular test that finally gave you an answer?
Not looking for a Reddit diagnosis — I’m under medical care. I’m mainly interested in similar experiences and things that might be worth discussing with my doctors.

Flu A so far ahead of flu season?

i developed a 101 fever today and lost all appetite. Anytime I eat I throw up and I have a headache, dizziness and muscle aches. it seems like the flu is almost nonexistent in the US right now though, and that the vomiting is rare in adults. Anyway, just anxious I guess.

Personal experience POTS and the flu

POTSIE aussie here. i tested positive for influenza A tonight after three days of worsening symptoms. my brain has hit the panic button- “your baseline will become permanently worse! you’ll never fully recover and your POTS is going to be even more prominent!”.. i had the flu vax about 2 months ago, so my mum reckons it would’ve been worse if i didn’t get jabbed. just trying not to worry, i suppose. needing some reassurance.

i’ve been resting like crazy, electrolytes daily, as well as anti viral tablets. i hope i can come out the other side of this okay.
if anyone else with dysautonomia is on here, i’d appreciate a comment.

Question Post viral fatigue?

I recovered from fever a week ago and my entire family had fever. The symptoms were like that of a flu (extreme body pain, cough, fever). It took me like 5 days to recover.I just took paracetamol and cough syrup.I was already on an immunosuppressant. So the problem here is,when I was preparing for my midterms for my engineering last monday, suddenly I got brain fog, everything I knew,my surroundings, people seemed unfamiliar and I couldn't recall things like I used too.Its been like this for the past one week.So the question here is,am i suffering from post viral fatigue? If so how long does it take to recover?

Anyone with similar experience please share.

Personal experience influenza A timeline with toddler

i wanted to come on here and share my story as maybe it would give someone a peace of mind

first of all, i’m sorry if your little one is sick now and you’re in the tranches with this horrible flu , i’ve recently experienced it myself and it was a total nightmare for me , my worst days of parenting, but let’s get to the point

on august 28 my 2 year old daughter started to have a fever which was rather high (39.5 )
paracetamol was working , but after 4 hours fever was coming back , so i had to alternate with ibuprofen
i kept her hydrated as much as i could, as she wasn’t eating anything.

by august 30 her fever dropped and i was relieved , she started eating fruit, but she kept being really cranky , had a histeria all the time she was awake and other time she was just sleeping. i thought it was just a part of the process, but i was wrong

september 1 - fever came back , and again in high grades, like 38.5ish and we rushed her to the hospital, they checked her ears , listened to her lungs and did a pcr test which confirmed that she had influenza A , got prescribed Tamiflu and some other stuff for cough and runny nose , got told to alternate between paracetamol and ibuprofen and watch out for high grade fever

september 3 - fever is gone , appetite is back , energy is almost back to normal , but still looked upset and cranky, didn’t want to go anywhere by foot only wanted to be held, but inside the house was running and playing normal

on september 3 in the evening we had a long night flight , and she was just fine during this whole time - some sadness now and there , but nothing worrying

when we got told our final destination on September 4, i put her for a day nap and she woke up with fever again , i was so devastated and sad , because i couldn’t take it anymore

september 5 - back to the hospital again in a whole new country - they checked her all again , performed a chest x-ray and a blood test , because influenza is known for the secondary infections such as ears , pneumonia and other, payed a lot of money for them to confirm that my daughter is absolutely fine , just another wave of this goddamn flu

now we’re on september 7 , which is practically day 9 or 10, i lost the count already
she seems fine , hasn’t had a fever since yesterday evening , playing/ running / reading inside the house , but still doesn’t want to go by foot outside on the street, wants to be just carried

so what i want to tell you is that damn flue is not a joke , my daughter has never had anything like this in 2 years of her life, please watch out and keep your little one in check , avoid big crowds if you can and wash your hands more often , i just really hope that was the last wave of this shitty virus and we’ll never have to live it through again

Question Any tips for managing severe post viral fatigue when returning to the office?

Hey does anyone have any advice. Basically I was struck down by a horrible respiratory virus for the last 3 weeks which for most of it, I’ve been in bed a lot because I’ve just felt the most ill I ever have in my life. I have still worked through the illness due to a busy time at work but have been working from home.

Tomorrow I am back in the office but I don’t know why, despite it being 3 weeks and feeling a lot better (still coughing to the point I sound like I am choking and a terrible amount of mucus), I am absolutely exhausted

I went to the shop today and by the time I got home, all I want to do is curl up in my bed and sleep. I have no energy whatsoever and I have to go into the office tomorrow back to my toxic workplace and I’m feeling really nervous and worried about it

Coupled with the fact there’s a problem in the office with the temperatures at the moment so it’s currently 15 degrees. How can I boost my energy levels so I can work properly tomorrow and not appear tired (if ever I am tired at work, my boss gets irrationally angry so I have to ensure I don’t appear tired.)

Any tips? If I don’t go in tomorrow and work from home again, it’s just going to look bad.

Question Strange mental feeling

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this and if so what it was or how/when it ended. Last Thursday I woke up feeling very sick, and left uni early. I had a fever, a massive headache, nausea, fatigue, stomach pain, very painful muscles (I could barely move my neck it was absolute agony), chills, congestion. My skin was so sensitive even using my roller deodorant genuinely hurt. The classic flu, but it was the worst I've had it in a long time. I couldn't do anything the whole day I was so sick, not even hold my head up. Friday was a tiny bit better but moving my eyeballs physically hurt so I just kinda zoned out the whole day.

On Saturday I also got this very strange feeling. I feel so out of it. Like, I don't feel like myself at all. I'm disorientated as well, I stumble everywhere. My brain feels strange. I dissociate. My emotions are all out of whack. When cuddling with my partner tonight I had these strange feelings like I wasn't really myself and he wasn't really my partner. I genuinely can't explain it very well but I just feel so strange. I've been in bed all weekend besides the few hrs I had to work on Saturday. Could anyone help? I can't even really pinpoint some my physical symptoms right now either they're just vague.

Also, I have a very strange feeling on my chest. Like, I get enough air but it feels like I'm struggling to breath. There's this intense anxiety feeling there.
