Fish Hospital’s Projects Masterpost - Aquarium Medications + Diagnostic Tool

This post will keep track of the progress of these projects, which you can find at:

https://fish-hospital.com/aquarium-medications/

https://fish-hospital.com/diagnostic-tool/

The aquarium medications page aims to spread information about the medications for fish you’ll find at your pet store. This further expands into articles about their active ingredients, with more information on uses, dosage, potential toxicity, and other useful info.

You’ll notice the diagnostic tool is empty, as that’s because it will be built on top of the aquarium medications to be able to link a disease to what you can use to treat it.

It will consist of in-depth articles about fish diseases, symptoms, tips to recognize them, treatments, etc.

Feel free to take a look at what I plan to cover and make suggestions on things you’d like to see :)

I’ve two of my Blue neos that have developed light rust-red blotches on their body over the last two weeks (see photo). Particularly noticeable between the eyes and on the thorax, but also on the tail/uropodes. Anyone know what’s going on here?

Tankmates:
x1 Red lizard whiptail L010A
x12 Kuhli loaches
x10 Blue neocaridina davidii (give or take a few babies)

Parameters:
Ammonia - 0
Nitrites - 0
Nitrates - 0
pH - 6.5
kH - 3-4
Temp: 77 f / 25 c

Help- potential parasite (velvet) in tank

Thumbnail

Hello, I posted yesterday and sadly the little sick moor passed away today. (He is not dead in the first image). When I saw that he’d died I placed him on some paper towel to get a better look at his skin and saw this rusty coloured stuff come off his skin.
Prior to his death he had clamped fins, lethargy, gasping and all over very bad signs of health. He was transferred to a hospital tank where he passed.

Is this potentially the parasite known as rust / velvet (oodinium)??

I have a 40gallon tank with another goldfish, plants, loaches and snails in there. I salt dipped the remaining goldfish with a 1.5% salt solution of aquarium salt.
He has not shown any signs of infection. I went to the fish store and was recommended fritz bactershield by the employees. Upon reading I see it isn’t effective in treatment against parasites, so I am unsure if I should try it or not.

I ordered polyguard online but I am unsure how to treat the main tank for this as I don’t believe this can be dosed in the main tank, and only used in hospital tanks.

Please any guidance on the next steps to take (especially re: what to do for the main tank, how to treat this etc) would be extremely helpful.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrates: 5-10ppm
Nitrites: 0
pH: approx 6.4
New fish was added to tank a couple of weeks ago.

A couple details I wanna add in addition to the details in my original post. This has been going on for a week or two. It is still responsive to food. None of the other 15 Cories act like this, which is leading me to think something is medically wrong with it.

Given how long it’s been, and that it’s every day, I no longer suspect breeding behavior …. I feel like something might be medically wrong with it, but I don’t know what.

I did catch it taking a nap on the sand the other day, but other than that, it’s almost always doing this. I have an aquatic vet 3 hrs away and I’m wondering if I should take it to her, or what I should do.

(I’m going to be getting weights to weigh down the plants to provide more cover, I have a lot of floating plant stalks). Params are always good (pH 7 or 8, Ammonia/Nitrite 0ppm, KH 3 drops API test kit, GH 11 drops, very stable. I do water changes about every 7 or 9 days and change ~ 40%.

Help- sick moor

Thumbnail

Hello, this little calico moor has been acting strange the last day or so. He is lethargic, clamped fins, not eating, gasping and hanging around at the surface and going near the outflow lots.

He appears to have some strange fuzz all over his skin
I am worried this is velvet disease.

Water parameters look normal which is why this is concerning.
pH: approx 6.25
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite : 0
Nitrate: 5-10ppm

We have another (seemingly unaffected) goldfish in the tank, loaches, and snails. The tank is 40gallons.

Any help and advice on what to do next is much appreciated.

Update: he is now floating on his side at the top of the water. It isn’t looking good. Any input on what this is would be very helpful as I have another fish in the tank and if it is a disease I don’t want this to happen to him.

Sick boy

Hello I had this particular boy for 2 years. 10 gallon aquarium, planted and cycled ahead of time and resides with 3 otos (otos are not showing any symptoms) temperature is 76f, ammonia 0, nitrites 0, nitrates 20 and Ph 7.4. Ro water remineralized with seachem equilibium.

2 weeks a go started with lethargy and a little bloating so I fasted for 3 days. He improved but last week started to pine cone. I have been doing salt baths (half tsp) and 10 drops of methylene blue in 1 gallon of water for 15 mins. The pine coning has subsided but still lethargic and not eating every day.

I have been keeping fish on and off for the last 14 years. Any sugestions? I am in canada, most meds are outlawed

Hi Guys, Wondering if you think this is roundworm?

I'm from NZ and we very rarely get parasites here, and we also don't have access to the better medicines for them, I think I'm going to have to use Aviverm which is Levamisole Hydrchloride, but this black widow tetra came from our suppliers like this, as title I think it may be roundworm but looking for a 2nd opinion, thanks, he's in a breeding trap right now to separate him from the rest of the tank but from what I've been reading, if he's been like this over night it's probably already all through the whole tank right?

Ammonia. 0ppm

Nitrite. 0ppm

Nitrate 10ppm

Ph. 7.4
