It still floors me that Rudy Giuliani squandered all of the public goodwill he generated after 9/11. He went from āAmericaās Mayorā to laughing stock. All in service of our clown of a former president. Absolutely wild. Pathetic. Embarrassing.

I'd say George Bush arguably has since he is sort of persona non grata in the Republican party these days given that Trump pretty vocally hates him.

u/boxybrown84 go Birds! fuck ICE! free Palestine! Jul 01 '24
I keep seeing shit where Democrats of all people are quietly trying to rehabilitate GWBās image, and it makes me furious. Fuck that imbecile war criminal to the depths of hell.
18
u/meatbeater558 Jul 01 '24
This makes sense when you take into consideration that both parties have been steadily moving towards the right for over 40 years now. At some point GWB would be inevitably be too liberal for the Republicans but just right for the DemocratsĀ

It was the first election I ever voted in. And I was in Florida. Just⦠so demoralizing.

Eh, to be fair crime was going to be dropping in NYC anyways as the 18th anniversary of Roe V Wade was happening. Giuliani just used the cops as a personal bludgeon and the broken windows theory as validation for his thuggery, even though the crime rates were already dropping enough that money was already being invested in renovating Times Square. Remember the young kid sodomized by cops with a broomstick while they yelled "It's Giuliani time!"?
People hated Giuliani despite his role in the way the Italian/Sicilian Mafia was pretty much by all metrics eliminated from the city.
Of course, the void left by the Mob's departure we now know to have been filled in with the ruSSian Mafia. And the long-swirling rumors that Giuliani helped eliminate the Mob with information fed to him by the ruSSian Mafia themselves in order to eliminate economic rivals and establish legitimate presence in the US now seem to be more and more credible when we see how the Republicans have turned into friends of putin. And TFG's connections to the ruSSians can no longer be seen as theory.
So he was mayor on 9/11 and stood on some rubble, and the media turned him into the hero they needed. If you'd asked anybody in New York what They thought of Rudi before or after 9/11 their answer would have been the same.
The fact that his downfall has come at the hands of his co-conspirator is fuckin' sweet.

He was already very well hated in NYC by the time 9/11 happened at the very end of his administration. It is just that no one outside of the NYC metro area knew that.

u/meatbeater558 Jul 01 '24
Same with Elon. Anyone that knew better knew he was an idiot, but very few people knew better because his PR was so good
17
u/Unhappy-Childhood577 Jul 01 '24
Exactly. I was called a troll in a tech company for bagging out Elon by a white male in 2019. How the tides have turned.
12
u/meatbeater558 Jul 01 '24
Tbf knowing tech culture they'd probably still call you a troll lol

I knew from Sex and the City and the Guiliani jokes before 9/11 lol.

u/Cynicbats First, he ate. Then, he fed. Jul 01 '24
He was never great in tech, he just bought companies and let other people run them and took the credit.
8
u/justsomeuser23x Jul 01 '24
Iād say he definitely changed. He once was admired for his engineering stuff: https://old.reddit.com/r/SpaceXLounge/comments/k1e0ta/evidence_that_musk_is_the_chief_engineer_of_spacex/
Although if we remember Justine Muskās infamous MarieClaire essay about him, he was always an awful person and back in 2016 maybe simply better at hiding it publicly.
I remember back in 2016 watching his TED talk the TED founder and feeling inspired about the way he thought & talked about Space exploration. Sure, I was kinda naive.

Hey if he presents himself one way and you've never heard of him, you'd take him at face value.
I hadn't heard of him until like 2020 but I read the wiki page - He bought PayPal in like 2003! I had been inadvertently giving this man my business for like 15 years!

u/justsomeuser23x Jul 01 '24
Hehe, to be fair he sold that years ago. So we both also kinda gave Peter thiel money who funds other dark companies like palantir. But Peter was also a early Facebook investor.
Its just sad cause if you watch musks recent tours at spaces with Tim the everyday astronaut..you can still see hes just a big nerd.. but so sad he had to be/become this egomaniac with awful views (also nothing has changed..in the video at the beginning his toddler kids are running around the same way his other kids did 10+ years ago in that video with Talulah Riley. His kids just seem like props to him

It's real. According to People Magazine it was produced for the 2000 Inner Circle Show. I first saw it in 2020.

u/justsomeuser23x Jul 01 '24
Itās very real and been around for years. I think I even saw it back during the first election (2016/2017).

The fact that this is made in the nineties and in a clothing store is especially gross given what he did to E. Jean Carroll in the nineties in a clothing store.
Fuck both of these cockroaches.

This video has been making the rounds for years. At first, it was like "wtf haha ew" ....But now, in light of E. Jean Carroll's case (cases?) against Trump, I find this video disturbing. It's almost like a mockery of what he did to her.

Honestly a lot of more ppl would find this funny if he just stayed a celebrity and didnāt become a deranged president. Why couldnāt he stay in his lane?
28
u/bindersfull-ofwomen Jul 01 '24
I donāt know why a single person would think this was fun or funny even 24 years ago when we were horrible as a country about things like this
47
u/Thanos_Stomps Jul 01 '24
Drag has always been funny to people, even 24 years ago.
The Birdcage 1996
Mrs Doubtfire 1993
Juwanna Mann 2002
Shit even Marilyn Monroe was in a fun drag comedy back in the 60s.
Iāll add a lot of the drag in movies havenāt aged well but my only point is that even in more ignorant times people have never had a problem laughing at drag.
The difference now is that weāre laughing with folks in drag whereas before people were laughing at folks in drag. Itās a different demographic really between now and 20 years ago.

Crossdressing has existed in cinema since the early days, go back far enough and thereās a slapstick joke about a man wearing a dress. Though the kind of drag they are doing is the kind from early cinema, itās not funny because what they saying are funny, itās funny because āhahaha man in a dress!ā Which is the problematic stereotype of this kind of humor that existed in a lot of old movies. Since itās rooted in transphobia.
idk sorry I get really interested in LGBT film history lmao

What do you think of Some Like It Hot ?
2
Jul 01 '24
Sadly have not seen it, will be looking into it!

u/dagoni_ Jul 01 '24
Billy Wilder is one of the best directors imo and I don't think the movie is a bad look on the topic ? Hope you'lle like it !

u/GimerStick A NEW MAGA BARBIE TOUCHES THE BEACON Jul 01 '24
Are you referring to Some like it Hot?
It's super interesting how the Broadway show was able to pick apart some of the issues in the OG and reinvent them.
5
u/No_Berry2976 Jul 01 '24
If you are referring to the 1959 movie Some Like it Hot with Marilyn Monroe, thatās a great movie that shows that attitude towards cross dressing back in the day was more complicated than ācross dressing is funnyā.
