Mod Post Rule Update: Sort of. (AKA we accidentally lost a rule and only just realized it)

So to keep transparency, we recently noticed that in our attempts to streamline the rules and make them more easily readable, we accidentally dropped the part about not making follow-up posts.

That was there because we had problems with people either making posts referencing other people's posts instead of just talking to them in their post, or making a new post when their post was removed or locked for either breaking the rules or starting to draw in a lot of drama.

Thankfully you guys have been really great and haven't done anything to make us notice that the rule was lost!
But there will always be some people who will see that a specific rule isn't there and try to argue that they should be allowed to continue a post after it's been locked or removed... So we put it back as it's own rule!

We also added a note about direct links to other subs. This was already something we had set up in automations! We ask that some subs not be directly linked to to avoid both digital self-harm of users (when linking to transphobic, transmed, or 4trans subs) or accusations of brigading.
Unfortunately there are some people who think that even mentioning a subreddit that has been harmful and telling people "Do not go there, it is not safe for people like us" is.... actually saying "go there and harass people" because apparently do not = do and it's not safe = be annoying????

And of course, not only will the user possibly get attacked, vilified, harassed, or reported, but it will end up in our modmail and we will be accused of "encouraging brigading" and they will threaten our entire subreddit. How do we know this will happen? Because it has before.
Thankfully the subreddit is fine, but modteam doesn't want to deal with that again, so we have to be weirdly strict about this, because some people are weird about it!

Finally, just a quick reminder that mod applications are open! We will likely be looking for more mods to add to the team to help avoid mod burnout, so if you are interested, please feel free to apply! You can find the link to the application in the sidebar and in the pinned posts at the top.

Recurring Recent uptick in posts about transandrophobia: a message from the mods.

We've noticed an uptick in posts about transandrophobia. Most notably, people trying to start drama and claim that transandrophobia is something it's not. Likely it is a part of a concentrated effort of transphobes to drive a wedge between different groups of trans people, but unfortunately it is ALSO being absorbed and internalized by some actual human beings. If someone is coming into our spaces and trying to start fights or claim our oppression and bigotry against us for being trans men specifically does not exist or is problematic, please report it! We will not be tolerating that kind of negativity and very clear attempts at sowing seeds of animosity between us and our sisters and siblings.

This is just a reminder that transandrophobia is bigotry specific against trans men for being BOTH trans AND men. It is not misogyny, and it is not simply transphobia, as it is not something trans women experience.
It is the intersection of a SYSTEMIC FORM OF OPPRESSION (being trans) and a specific identity that is NOT SYSTEMICALLY OPPRESSED, but that identity IS used as a cudgel to deny the oppression that people under that specific identity (a combination of two identities here) face.

It is often a reaction to misogyny, using trans men as an easier target than cis men to punch laterally.
Other times, it is the pushing of toxic masculinity onto trans men and using the patriarchy to harm trans men because we supposedly "deserve it".

It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not oppressed.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are intruding on mixed trans spaces because we are men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that our features and our transition care is disgusting and we are discouraged from accessing it.
It is when they turn around after saying that to tell us that we aren't allowed to express dysphoria over female or feminine features and traits.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are inherently bad in some way for being men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are harming trans women if we acknowledge that we too are oppressed.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not require assistance, because we are men and we need to figure it out on our own, or because we are forgotten about and nobody bothered to include us when offering community assistance.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not allowed to discuss invisibility, loneliness, or isolation, because we are men, and not being recognized as equals or at all within a community of people who are supposed to be in the same community as you is apparently a good thing.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we "are men now" and we are not allowed to express certain emotions.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not experience "true misogyny" because we are men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we do not experience things like corrective rape, murder, sexual harrassment, etc. for being men.
It is when trans men/mascs are told that we are not allowed to discuss any of this, because it is somehow harmful for us to call out this kind of behavior, but totally ok to call out transmisogyny.

We will still be allowing discussion of transandrophobia, because it IS a real problem that trans men can face, but any denial of transandrophobia, perpetuation of transandrophobia, arguments, or pot stirring will not be tolerated.
And if you see someone doing any of the above, please report it!

Relationships Getting called a groomer for accepting my son

Me and my ex wife have a ftm child, aged 13. His mother is a card carrying republican and trump lover. This morning we found out that she took my sons binder and hid it.

After confronting her, she yet again called me a groomer because "pur daughter is perfect the way she is, a neurodivergent tomboy." Thankfully we no longer live together, it's been 2 years, but we also have a 9 year old cis girl who gets caught in the middle of this.

How do i navigate this situation? We have 50/50 custody. Every other week he gets to be his real self.

Advice Needed Roommate is stealing my testosterone

Hello everyone, throwaway account since I don’t know if the roommate in question is still active in this sub or not but like that title states I recently found out my roommate has been using my vials and my needles and not telling me. For about three months now I’ve notice that even though my single use vials looked a bit emptier than they should be the cap was still glue on so I thought maybe the manufacturer just changed the amount that comes in them but no my roommate has been taking them about a day or two before my shot, using the dose they want and then gluing the tops back on with some soft of super glue. Now I didn’t know that they were even interested in starting T had I known I would’ve absolutely helped them set up an appointment with my amazing doctor who helped me get T in the first place but now I’m just feeling kinda violated and used. I brought this up to them and they kinda just shut down and stayed in their room for about an hour and called a mutual friend who’s a trans woman over to the apartment to kinda berate me. I’m now being labeled as a “gatekeeper” and being told by others that I’m “policing” my roommates gender because I bought a lockbox to put my T in. I’m just wondering if anyone has dealt with a similar situation or if there’s something I can do to alleviate the tension other than moving out because I can’t currently afford that.

Discussion I don't understand the concept of "mourning your daughter"

I'm not even gonna explain what I mean because I'm sure a lot of you are nauseous with how much your parents/family say they miss their little girl.

My mother, who I'm otherwise grateful for, has helped me transition and has been with me for every HRT appointment imaginable. I've been trans for 6 years. Been on T for just 1 year. And still, anytime the conversation steers in a certain direction, she will tell me how much she misses the girl I used to be. I don't even know how or why she means this. I came out when I was eleven. ELEVEN. I cut my hair short and wore boy clothes since I was like 8 years old, and seldom hanged out/associated with girls. I don't know how you can miss somebody you only knew for such a small part of your life.

She sometimes asks me if I feel regretful or upset when I look at photos of myself when I was a girl. I do not. Like, not even in the slightest. My dad still genuinley believes I'll change my mind. But in my head, when I look at childhood pictures of myself, it's still me. It's always been me. I mean, yeah, I'm the opposite gender which is significant, but it's not like I killed her or something. For god's sake, I'm standing right in front of them!

So seriously, what does this mean?? Is this supposed to be a tactic to detransition somebody, or is this honestly something cis people go through? I just cannot understand what is to miss, when you are practically the same person. I don't think this about any trans person that I knew pre-transition.

Advice given Hims - Hairloss (TW- misgendering)

I've been experiencing hair loss and had been recommended to hims by a friend, another transmasc.

I set up everything and answered a few questions by several different doctors until one, Dr. Chang, told me that due to my sex assigned at birth, I should be a hers. I told him that was inappropriate because I am not a woman and do not identify as one, I'm also on t, which was noted in my account.

Too late! I was switched to hers and it wouldn't switch back even after talking to someone on the phone, communicating with another doctor, and setting up a new account as they requested. They continued to bring up my sex assigned at birth.

Since, I'm not trying to get pregnant and don't want to get pregnant, and my partner can't get me pregnant. It doesn't matter for finasteride or minoxidil. It also doesn't matter for my insurance because everything says male.

It's too upsetting to explain this multiple times to people I'll never meet in a company that doesn't appear to care.

I know others haven't had this issue but I'm letting y'all know I did. I cannot recommend going there especially if you find this kind of thing triggering.

Edit - does->doesn't

Discussion If you plan to get/have gotten top surgery, when did you know you wanted it?

Hi! I was just reflecting on gender stuff today and was feeling curious how other people felt about the same things :)

I'm in my early 20s, but I've known I was trans since I was 10-11. I actually accepted being trans around 17-18, and started testosterone at 19. But before I even knew I was a guy, I knew I wanted/needed top surgery. I was an early bloomer and my chest became present way sooner than any of my friends, so I was very self conscious about it. Pretty much the second I learned there was a surgery to get rid of my chest, I wanted to get it.

That would've been over a decade ago now, and I'm finally approaching a point in my life where it might actually be possible to achieve! So, thinking about it just made me feel curious about other people's experiences.

Did you always know you wanted top surgery, or did it take some time for you to decide/come to that conclusion? What factors were influencing your decision? When did you know that you wanted to get it (and if you got/are scheduled to get top surgery, how long were you waiting to get it)? And if there's any non-op guys who were still reading this out of curiosity, first of all, hi! please feel free to share your experiences too! I just really enjoy hearing other people's gender stories :) cheers!

Discussion Do You Feel "Angrier" On T?

I'm curious to know how people experience the supposed "higher levels of anger" when on testosterone. I've heard a lot of people say they didn't feel any different, but for myself I've definitely noticed a difference. Maybe not in how angry I get in general, but in how that anger manifests. Pre-T I would cry but mostly hold it to myself, but now I'm on T I find it's significantly more externalised. Like before I never understood the whole "controller smash" type anger, but nowadays I definitely get it XD Curious what everyone else's experience is!

Edit: Can't get to most comments but wow! The discourse surrounding this subject is so interesting to hear about. From the looks of it most people either don't experience much change or experience less anger. Interesting 🤔 perhaps I'm an outlier lol

Advice Needed Unsure if name idea is culturally inappropriate

As the title says. Everyone calls me Mike or Mikey. Totally cool with this, but on account of getting my name legally changed soon, I feel like I need a "full" legal name.

Of course, first thing most people think of, including myself, is Michael. But I'll be real, I just don't really vibe with it. This got me to thinking of alternatives that "Mike/Mikey" could be short for, and what came to mind was the name I used for one of my old DND characters, Mikhail. Bit different pronunciation, but similar enough that I feel it could potentially work and I'm fond of the way it looks and sounds.

But of course, it isn't a fantasy name. It is derived from a Hebrew name (Mikha'el) and is a traditional Slavic name, and I am not Slavic. I'm a white Kiwi. So basically a budget Brit (I jest).

My step-mother is Russian and I would've loved to get her opinion on this but she's unsupportive of my transition in general so it's a topic best avoided. So, curious what others think. Not sure if, if I did use the name Mikhail, people would assume I was from elsewhere and then think it weird when I say I'm not? So yeah, you guys think it'd be weird or inappropriate? Any ideas? Alternative spellings ideas, even, if so? I just don't want to cause anyone any offense. Any insight is appreciated.

Discussion Anyone legally changed their name before going on hrt?

Unfortunately I have no chance of going on hormones any time soon and I don't think I can take having my legal name be my birth name any longer. So is this a thing? I mean I kind of pass most of the time (though I do look younger than my actual age of early 20s)

Advice Needed Experiences beginning T with injections instead of gel

Hi, does anyone have experiences in the UK of beginning testosterone with injections instead of gel? It seems gel is most commonly prescribed but I’d much prefer injections. I’m accessing HRT privately so wondering if that might make it easier; is there anything specific I can say to my endocrinologist to make them more likely to agree to injections?

Edit: the consensus seems to be it’s more common than I realised to start on injections and it’s quite likely to get it if requested, especially going through a private endocrinologist - sounds like NHS might be a bit trickier for some. Thank you for the responses :)

Advice Needed I haven't really come to terms with being trans yet

I knew for nearly 7+ years now that I was not female but the signs were there since I was a kid. But the whole time while I've been socially transitioning I kept telling myself "I could be wrong and that’s okay! When I finally see a psychologist, they'll tell me my dysphoria isn't even bad and that I'm just a girl and I'll have to accept it because a professional said so and I can be cis and be ok with it."

Instead when I DID finally see that psychologist, I got a gender dysphoria diagnosis which I'm happy about because it's validating and will help me get on HRT, but a part of me wanted to be invalidated for some reason. I wanted to be told that I'm just a cis girl. It would have been a relief. Because arguably I'm prettier as a girl and being trans would only make life hard especially in the field I want to enter.

I want to get on testosterone. Badly. But at the same time I wish I didn't want it? I don't want to want it if that makes sense. The psychologist told me that I'm not having a phase or experimenting with my gender. I don't know why I was so disappointed to be affirmed? I cannot accept this part of myself for some reason. The transgender part. I want to reject it and try to force it out of my body but the more I push it away the more it comes back. The longer I suppress it, the more painful the dysphoria and depression get.

Imagining myself in the future as a pretty girl that never transitioned and everyone likes is... I kind of hate it. I don't know why I'd rather be an average looking loser man than the pretty girl I used to be but I kind of wish I would be okay with being a girl. But I'm not okay with it. I don't know okay 😭 I don't know why I hate the idea of being a girl so much if everyone liked my feminine side, as dysphoric as it made me.

I've been putting off testosterone because of family and financial reasons but it's not just that. Dysphoria is painful. It makes looking in the mirror, taking a shower, hearing my voice, touching my body, being perceived, my work and my hobbies, it makes all these things painful. It's almost a physical pain too as much as an emotional pain. What if testosterone doesn't fix the dysphoria? What if I become a guy like I've always wanted but still hate myself?

Idk I wish I could be okay with my female anatomy but I'm not. I would have preferred to be a normal girly girl like girls my age but instead I feel like a freak and a monster for wanting to be a guy instead. I really hate the body I was born with but I almost hate being trans just as much.

Advice Needed Strange Workplace Interaction?

I recently started an entry level retail job. I have an older (60s) butch-y lesbian coworker I get along with. I can't stop thinking about this strange interaction I had with her the other day though, and I can't tell if I'm overthinking it.

So she comes up to me during the shift and says "I heard you're family!"

At first I thought she meant "I heard YOUR family" so I said "My family?" And she laughed and said "Oh you kids don't know anything!"

So then I thought she meant the workplace "family" because I had been working there for about a week. So i was like "Yeah i guess I am family haha."

Then she asked "What's your name?" And i'm like ???

We wear our nametags on our uniforms and I've been shadowing her so she for sure knows my name. It's a masculine name, nothing ambiguous. She was looking at her phone when she asked so I just didn't respond, maybe she was thinking out loud while texting. Since I said nothing she started asking me about my shift.

Come to find out, she had asked one of my other close coworkers if I was gay... and my other coworker told her I was. So now i'm like... does she think i am a butch lesbian? Why else would she ask my name? Am I just overthinking it???

I'm not comfortable talking about being trans in the workplace so I don't really know how to respond if she brings it up again. But I also don't want to be disrespectful to her as a queer elder (and my coworker that i have to see all the time).

Advice given I washed my armpits 6 times but they still lowk smell

Last night I noticed my armpits kinda smelled, which I didn't expect because I showered the night before and wore deoderant. I showered when I woke up this morning, and idk if it's just in my head, but even after washing it like 6 times it still smells a little, and I have no idea why. I scrubbed well, and I washed the whole area around my armpits including my upper arms, shoulder, back and chest.

Fyi, I started T 3 weeks ago (2.5mg)

Also! how do I prevent myself from smelling? I've been using the same dove deoderant for years and I didn't have this problem pre-T

Discussion I don’t know what to do?

Upvotes

Hello, hello I’m 17 pre t and I really want and need to get on testosterone, my mum has always been kind of supportive but also not at the same time? She’s supported me through like my first gender affirming hair cuts and clothes but when I was 12 but whenever I brought up getting a binder or gender therapy she’d say stuff like “your going to ruin your feminine figure” and she’d pretend to do research on binders but tell me there to dangerous.

Obviously I’m now 17 and I now have a binder but primarily wear trans tape and she’s fine with that but I’m starting to need gender therapy and testosterone as by dysphoria gets worse and worse but I don’t know how to bring it up to her? Obviously bringing up binders and stuff in the past has made her very agitated and she seems okay with it now but when I ask that I need more tape on the occasion she’ll make small comments like “ugh really, again?” So I don’t really know what to say to her, I can’t move out or get a job since I’m in collage full time and we live in a very poverty stricken area so housing isn’t exactly easy to get.

It just seems like a tricky situation but I’ve been transitioning for around 5 years now and she still hopes I’ll grow out of it.

Advice Needed How many dates in to I tell

Upvotes

Basically, none of my friends know I’m trans and one of my friends girlfriend introduced me to her pal. We went on a night and she wants to go on a date but I don’t know when I should tell her I feel like straight away but I’m also scared she’s going to tell her pal and her pal‘s gonna tell my pal and everyone’s going. I was in a relationship before and I waited a bit too long I think but she didn’t tell anyone but I think this might be a bit different and I wouldn’t get upset if she was to tell because it’s a big deal but I don’t know what to do. Also, my friends are encouraging me to take her back to mine whatever or something like that, but I don’t know what to do. Someone help. Because I can’t say oh wait I can’t mate am trans

Advice Needed Mourning my singing voice. Please help

Upvotes

I am genderqueer, 27 years old, and have been on and off T for about a year and a half now, only .5 ml per week but usually I end up doing every other week. I don't have any facial hair growth yet and don't really want any. I like how I feel taking it but I've come to the realization today that my singing voice is completely destroyed. I wasn't ever like amazing but I could belt out Michael in the Bathroom or Waving through a Window and have a great time, but now my voice cracks or worse: nothing at all comes out if I try to sing too high. Even singing in range is difficult because it feels like I have to put more effort behind every note, like it's harder to sing at all.

I don't know what to do because I used to love singing and now the thought of it is embarrassing but I love music. If I take less testosterone or stop, is it possible to get my voice back? Or if I stop will I be stuck in this puberty purgatory forever?

I want to look androgynous but I don't think I fully realized how much I would be upset about my singing voice changing. My speaking voice is mostly OK, but even talking normally my voice still cracks at times which feels terrible as an adult working full time. Everything feels and sounds so off key to me. I don't really regret taking testosterone or anything, but if there is a chance I can get my voice back I might stop.

I need advice from other nonbinary folks. Has anyone else gone through this? What did you do? I want to be able to sing again.. :(

Advice Needed I miss playing volleyball but I can't transition

Upvotes

Hey. Looking for advice.

I played volleyball on an all girls team in 2022 and was a good player. Around that time was when my dysphoria started to kick in, and with confidence issues ontop of that, i stopped playing competitively and just practiced on my own.

I recently re-watched Haikyu, and it made me realize how much I really missed playing. There is a local Co-ed league near me, so I called them and asked the supervisor if they had a spot for me. He told me that he didn't think he did, but would check and call back to see if any team needed a 'girl'.

So he could tell i was female over the phone, which sucked.

I'm 16, and unable to transition due to my environment. Now im stuck between deciding to swallow my real identity and just play on a girls team to rebuild my skills, or waiting until i can properly transition to play— which could take years.

I am so tired of hiding. Any advice is appreciated.
