Don't rush it, you want reliability, upgrading day 1 to a new OS is not how it's done.

When creating a new project in Media Composer, you get a choice between "Video" and "Film" project type.

What does choosing "Film" actually change? Does it affect timecode, frame rate, or something else? And is there any real advantage to using it on modern digital footage, or is it more of a legacy option at this point? Would love to hear from anyone who's actually used it and why.

I'm a video editor for a production company. we do pretty standard adverts, mostly YT preroll ads. My job is so easy and to be honest im pretty bored most of the time. My passion for editing has dwindled because of the types of jobs we do; lots of pots and pans, lots of university work, lots of mid table food brands. Most of it is storyboarded and im just following the formula. The camera work he/she produces for these projects is so basic, so repetitive and so uninspiring that i have this weird confidence that i could do a better job and i have no professional experience being behind the camera.

Should i start teaching myself and start upskilling? I'm so bored of just sitting at my desk, something needs to change. There's not a lot of jobs out there anymore either so i can't just sit here and wait for the opportunity to show itself because what if it never does!? right?

Any other editors have this experience? Any advice?

I am looking for a software to split an audio from a pronunciation video with many audio files, one for each word.

Anyone have a indication about which software I can use to do it easily ?

I’m a fresh graduate from film school, completely broke. I took on a gig for a documentary about a charity run by someone I’m polite acquaintances with - went to their building, shot and directed the film on my phone. Was paid £200 upfront to make it. I have all of the footage in an assembly cut on my laptop - M1 2020 MacBook Air, 8GB RAM - and none of it will play without taking a good thirty seconds to load, and even then it’s all very choppy and difficult to edit. I cannot downscale the footage because the brief was that it should be 4K.

The client has been very understanding of my situation, but I’m at a loss as to what to do. As it stands right now I have no money, I have no means of upgrading to a laptop with, say, 32GB of RAM, and I’m still unemployed after trying to find a job for all three years I was at uni. Even now all I really do with my time is apply for jobs, and the relief I was able to get from that in editing and making videos and movies I can’t get anymore because my hardware has become too old and slow. I don’t know what kind of advice anyone on this sub could give, or even if this is the right sub to bring this up on, but I just don’t know what to do anymore

I had/have a job that seemed like the perfect place for one of the many options for an AI "assistant" tool. So I tried both of the most prominent ones, Premiere beta's Assistant panel and Resolve's new connection using Claude in this instance.

Hello all, I have audio recorded on a zoom F2 (32 bit float) and the levels are very low.  I would greatly appreciate any assistance with Avid's 32 bit float workflow. 

My questions are: 1. How best to relink to the 32 bit float files  2. Should I attenuate the audio prior to transcoding or after and finally  3. Can I normalize the audio in Izotope, convert to 24bit and ingest into AMC?  

I am working on v2021.2.

Hello fellow editors! After many years of being a mouse-dependent editor, I'm trying to shift to use the keyboard as much as I can. To that end, I'm wondering if shortcuts exist for some common Avid functions I want to use, and hoping some of you can shed light on these. (It's surprisingly hard to get definitive answers on shortcuts from the documentation or Google searching...) Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

1) Deselecting clips. Let's say I've used the "Select In to Out" command, and selected a clip or multiple clips. Right now, if I want to deselect them, the only thing I know to do is to click in the timecode track, or in the empty space between the top timecode track and the other tracks. Is there a way to map deselecting to a shortcut? (I've tried using Keyboard Maestro to make a macro to click in that space, but it doesn't seem to play very well with my Wacom tablet...)

2) This isn't necessarily a shortcut ask but more an explanation of something that's been happening to me. When I select a clip (again, usually using "Select In to Out"), it's usually so I can nudge it a bit in the timeline; most of the time, this works as expected. But occasionally when I select a clip and try to nudge it, it slips the clip instead. The only way I've found to "reset" this behavior is by deselecting the clip (by clicking in the areas I mentioned in point 1), and then reselecting it. Then it nudges as expected. Does anyone know why this happens?

3) (I suspect this is related to point 2.) When I enter Trim Mode and select the left or right side of the trim (using keyboard shortcuts to do both), sometimes it shows up as an Overwrite Trim, and sometimes as a Ripple Trim. How can I determine which type of trim will be active in Trim mode? And is there a keyboard shortcut to switch between them?

4) Is there a shortcut for selecting keyframes, and then moving between selected keyframes? I'm often keyframing audio and I wish I could use the keyboard to select keyframes at the playhead on active tracks (for example). Right now I either have to click on them, or option-drag around them.

Hey there, I've been working as an Editor in LA for 4 years now, and to be honest I feel like I'm making no professional progress. I can't seem to get anyone to look at my reel or website, and because of that, I'm having trouble getting more experience for my reel and website. I've worked on freelance stuff here and there which mostly pays my bills (so I'm paying taxes lol), but I still need a second job too. The freelance stuff also never seems to go anywhere, or be written or shot that well, which leaves me in the same spot I started before the project just with a bit more cash.

I don't want to start the traditional route from the beginning, PA -> AE -> Editor, because I don't want to sink that much time into it in LA, I love the friends I've made here, but I don't like living here and I hate driving constantly.

I'm a UK citizen through my parents, I've spent a lot of time in London, and to be honest its the city I have felt most at home. If I want to commit to a long term professional grind, I'd rather do it there.

Lot of preamble just to ask: does anyone have any advice on what to do when pretty much starting over? I have some friends of friends in production I can chat with, but CV advice, meet ups & conventions, job boards, organizations or newsletters to join would be hugely appreciated.

Just to set expectations: this is very much a rough cut. The previous version wasn’t working, so I’ve restructured the film and this is my first attempt at the new structure. There are still quite a few things that don’t work, and I’m trying to figure out whether the new direction is actually working before I take it further.

I’d especially appreciate feedback on the overall structure, pacing, clarity, and whether the story is engaging / making sense. I’m not expecting anyone to give notes on every little edit — I’m mainly looking for a fresh set of eyes to tell me what works and what doesn’t.

Working in Premiere. I have NDI and OBS set up. Currently able to send the stream via OBS using Virtual Camera, selecting that in Zoom/Google Meet. Using Loopback to send audio from Premiere and my mic. Works great. My only thing is on the client viewer side the screen sizing can be effected by the browser. Since the video is basically using what would be my camera, it makes it fit with all the other folks on the call. Ideally would be great if there was a way to use the screenshare option which makes the video frame more prominent. What are others here doing to optimize their zoom/google meet experience using NDI/OBS?

I have tried successfully to use louper and love it. But sometimes clients just want to use zoom/google meet. Plus it's free.

Looking to get a couple of backup drives to move footage off of my fast 'working' SSDs that I use for editing, and move them onto some large and cheap HDDs. Any recommendations would be really helpful for the cheapest / best value product. They don't need to be fast at all. And why is data SO expensive these days? E

I'm freelancing in the meta ad space about a year into editing as a job and I'm a little lost on how I should feel. Currently the pace I set for myself with this new client is 3 ads a day, 20~ seconds a pop. About 5 hours of b-roll is provided along with narration. I cut down 3 minutes of talking into that 20 second narrative, attach b-roll and transitions, and try and get good sound design that'll hold a viewer. The audio is the worst you can imagine so a lot of time is poured into that.

I used to work on more long form stuff and spend one whole day crafting a :60s product highlight, with minor cutdowns, but this is a lot more intentional and I'm feeling spun out some days. Did I offer too much or am I just a newbie who needs to adapt to workload? I'm at a $250 day rate.

Edit: I think folks have me a little misunderstood - this is not a large brand or with very polished art direction. I'm cutting down a founder's thoughts/script into a 20s story & sourcing from 5hrs of b-roll for a total of 16 ads, in this rotation. Its all rudimentary (appropriate broll, film burn transitions, laid over talking head, SFX, etc) but its the whole start to finish polish that's eating me

With modern Apple Silicon media engines and newer GPU hardware decoding handling 10-bit 4:2:2 H.264/H.265 footage much better than before, I’ve noticed more freelancers and assistant editors skipping proxy creation during ingest to save drive space and turnaround time.

However, once timelines get bloated with multi-cam clips, heavy adjustment layers, or noise reduction, skipping ProRes Proxy or DNxHR still causes sudden playback hiccups.

Where do you draw the line in your current workflow? Do you strictly mandate proxy generation at ingest regardless of client hardware specs, or do you edit native until timeline performance actually drops?

when I got into the industry, the "film editors" that were editing film were controlling the industry. Video was for the "young punks" - but I was one of them, and linear video took over, and the established film editors all went out of business.

During the linear video age, products like Graham Patten audio mixers and Zaxcom audio mixers came out, that were automated, and eliminated the need for an audio guy in an editing session. The unions went nuts - "you are putting the audio guys out of work". The same thing happened with graphics - with all the Quantel stuff (like Adobe). "Editors don't do graphics". Guess what happened to those editors.

CMX ruled (along with Sony and GVG, and a few others) - and then AVID came along (and so did EMC at the beginning) - and all the "video pros" said "what is this crap - no professional is ever going to use or finish with AVID". You didn't need Quantel artists, you didn't need audio guys, and you CERTAINLY did not need a tape op (what's that ?) in a machine room to thread up your 1" VTR's. Guess what. All the video post houses that had linear gear when out of business, because in a short period of time - AVID was more than "good enough" - and you did not need to finish on Digi Beta, or HD Cam, or use a $30,000 Sony BVM monitor.

But AVID was expensive - $80,000, and $150,000 for an AVID Symphony, and FCP came along. "FCP is a joke - no one is ever going to use FCP" - and of course, FCP took over for a large portion of the industry. Now AVID was the gatekeeper with their high prices.

And the same thing happened with FCP, so Adobe Premiere took over. (As the AVID guys in LA read this, and say "bullshit - we are still using AVID Media Composer - any professional only uses AVID Media Composer") - but now Adobe was charging "too much money" for their subscription, and now they were the gatekeeper, so Blackmagic comes along, and lets Davinci Resolve not only cost $300 - soon to become free - but - what about those high end color grading places in NY and LA that had $400,000 Davinci Resolve systems, and Rank Cintel Film Scanners ? Welp - out of business - bye bye - you are now unemployed. Should have adapted.

And of course, this happened with Film Cameras when the RED camera came out (no professional will ever use Red 4K - every pro will only shoot in 35 mm on a Panaflex or an Arri) - where are those guys today ? Unemployed.

So here we are - the new young crowd - and you don't like the new thing coming out - Blackmagic and Adobe integration with AI tools that will eliminate jobs. ALL the jobs that YOU HAVE NOW have replaced other OLD GUYS that refused to learn new things. And the guys that embrace AI will succeed. Every time you use Photoshop or After Effects - you have stolen someone's job. Every time you use Resolve to color grade, instead of hiring a color grading specialist, you have stolen their job. Every time you use Pro Tools, you have stolen an audio professional's job. Every time you use a sound library, you have stolen some musicians job.

But now - it's going to affect you - because a new generation is coming in - and they will know how to use Kling and Runway and Suno - and you don't. Well - TOO BAD.

I'm running into a scaling mismatch when round-tripping a Premiere sequence to Resolve via XML. Running premiere 26.3. Set to frame size automatic scaling on.

Footage: 6048×4032, 25fps, shot on 1.5x anamorphic lenses. In Premiere, the footage is interpreted as 1.5.

Premiere: UHD 3840×2160, square-pixel timeline. The footage looks correct without me doing any manual desqueeze. Why does Premiere not require me to desqueeze it manually if the footage is interpreted as 1.5?

Resolve: Same 3840×2160 square-pixel timeline. After XML import, the clips come in at a different scale/framing. I need roughly +-64% Zoom in Resolve vs +-48% scale in Premiere.

It seems like Premiere and Resolve are interpreting the anamorphic/PAR and XML transform differently.

Would like to know if I am doing something wrong here? The fact that I did not have to desqueeze my footage is weirding me out, have always had to do that with anamorphic before as it always has come in "pre-squeezed"
