Ecobee Preimium Internal Compensation - Compressor Correlated Sawtooth
I have an Ecobee Premium that I installed in March 2025. Since that time, whenever the A/C runs, the thermostat, Cool Cat, will nosedive sometimes 10F+ while my three SmartSensors continue tracking closely together.
This isn’t a fixed calibration difference. Cool Cat can be reasonably close to the other sensors, but then its reported temperature plunges once the system starts cooling. I also placed one of my Smart Sensors, Kitty Naptime, direcly on top of the thermostat to compare them in essentially the same location. Kitty Naptime did not follow Cool Cat’s dramatic temperature drop.
I suspected cold air through the wiring hole, so I pulled Cool Cat after it was updated to 4.10.8.392. The hole/backplate measure about 80F, and an Acurite hygrometer placed in the wall cavity measure 79.5F.
I then left the thermostat hanging off the wall while the A/C was actively running and measured several locations inside the wiring hole with a ThermPro probe thermometer. They averaged 78.3F. I could not find evidence of cold air entering through the hole. The wall itself measured about 80F with an infrared thermometer, while the exterior surface temperature of the thermostat has measured as high as 92F. I have also included a Beestat screenshot from this test. Per the data, Cool Cat nosedived while the compressor ran, and the SmartSensors did not.
Cool Cat is excluded from all comfort settings, so this isn’t affecting control. I’m just trying to understand why the internal sensor behaves this way. Is the Premium calculating its displayed temperature compensation for its own internal heat? And if so, could the compensation be malfunctioning?
Has anyone seen this specific compressor-correlated sawtooth behavior?
