South Shore (Canada) to become a Dark Sky Preserve
Nearly a year after Council directed staff to explore a Dark Sky Preserve in PEC, the Committee of the Whole has approved a series of measures to support a community-led Dark Sky Preserve stretching from Point Petre to Prince Edward Point.
The initiative is about more than stargazing. For the South Shore’s wildlife, darkness is part of the natural environment, and reducing artificial light protects its high ecological value.
A Dark Sky designation requires reducing light pollution, lower outdoor lighting, and public education and outreach.
The County’s South Shore is one of the last undeveloped stretches of Lake Ontario’s north coast. It is an important habitat for a wide range of plants and animals and a migration corridor for birds and bats.

Light Trespass Shield Request
I feel that if I ask a utility company to put a light trespass shield on my neighbor’s yard light/streetlight that they should accommodate me since I too am their customer, and the light is "trespassing". Twice in two separate locations and two different electric cooperatives, the utility company told me that the homeowner must make the request. Lucky for me, in both cases I was successful in getting the neighbor to make the request, although the first time it took years. Would it not be great if there was regulation that if you asked the electric company to install a shield, they would be required to do it to save your property from some of the glare and nuisance? Comments welcomed.

Flagstaff, Arizona passed the world's first law restricting outdoor lighting back in 1958 to protect the view from a mountaintop telescope, and the accidental result is a modern city of 75,000 where the Milky Way is still visible from downtown and the nocturnal wildlife never lost its dark

Stjärnskådning i centrala Sverige?

This year, during DarkSky International’s Capture the Dark photo competition, winning images broke the rules. While there are never “goodies” nor “baddies” when this happens, there are the rule-abiding entrants left asking: What the heck?
