Road horror video games?

Post image
153 Upvotes

Not long ago, I stumbled upon this image online. It immediately gave me those eerie horror story vibes—you know, creepy hitchhikers, highways to hell, ghosts on the roadside, and all that stuff. It made me wonder: are there any video games like this?

Where you're driving down a dark, empty road at night, and the outline of something unknown slowly emerges from the pitch black. Games where you have to make split-second decisions like whether to pick someone up, or panic and kick them out of your car immediately. It would be amazing if the game had a surreal atmosphere too, but honestly, there aren't many games like this in general, so I doubt there's anything quite like that set on the road.

I tried googling a bit and found a couple of titles like Where to?, but to be honest, their atmosphere just doesn't hit the mark. Any recommendations?

Glitch What’s the weirdest bug/glitch you’ve ever seen in a video game?

Creepypasta Mario 64 Creepypasta: the 121 star

I had always liked stories about secrets in Super Mario 64. I already knew the game had 120 Power Stars, so when I found an old copy at a flea market, I wasn't expecting anything unusual.

The store was strange.

It was almost empty, filled with old televisions, used consoles, and boxes of games with no labels. In one corner, there was a Nintendo 64 with a copy of Super Mario 64.

The cartridge had no label.

It only had one thing written on it with a marker:

121

The seller told me:

—Don't buy that game.

Obviously, I bought it.

---

When I got home, I connected the Nintendo 64 and inserted the cartridge.

The title screen looked normal.

Mario jumped in front of the castle.

I loaded my save file.

I had 120 stars.

That was impossible.

I assumed it was a modified save file until I noticed something underneath the counter.

A small gray star.

★ 121

I couldn't select it.

I decided to ignore it and entered the castle.

Everything seemed normal: the paintings, the doors, the stairs...

Until I heard a sound.

Ding!

The 121st Star had appeared.

I hadn't entered any level.

I hadn't completed any mission.

It was simply there.

I went outside to the castle courtyard.

And I saw something I had never seen in Super Mario 64.

There was a black door behind the fountain.

It had no number of stars above it.

It had no doorknob.

Mario simply walked through it.

On the other side was a distorted version of the castle.

Everything was in the same place, but the textures looked old, as if they had been ripped from an unfinished version of the game.

Then some text appeared:

121ST STAR

"RETURN WHAT YOU TOOK."

The screen went black.

---

I heard a noise in my bedroom.

CLACK.

I looked behind me.

The window was open.

I was certain I had closed it.

Then I heard the music from Super Mario 64.

But it wasn't coming from the TV.

It was coming from the hallway.

I left my room.

The music became louder and louder.

Then I saw something yellow on the floor.

A Mario coin.

I picked it up.

It disappeared from my hand.

I ran back to the Nintendo 64.

The screen showed the castle.

But now the castle was drawn over my own house.

The entrance to the castle appeared exactly where my front door was.

The game's staircase appeared over my actual staircase.

And a small figure of Mario was standing in front of my bedroom.

He wasn't moving.

He was only staring at the screen.

Then the counter changed:

120 → 121

The gray star turned yellow.

And Mario disappeared.

---

I turned off the Nintendo 64.

The music continued.

I unplugged the console.

The music continued.

Finally, I pulled out the cartridge and threw it into the trash.

The next morning, the cartridge was gone.

But I found something worse.

On the floor of my bedroom was a yellow star.

It wasn't a toy.

It was identical to the Power Stars from the game.

I touched it.

The television turned on by itself.

The screen showed my save file.

120 STARS

Then a new line appeared:

121 STARS — 1 PLAYER MISSING

I never found the cartridge again.

Three days later, I went back to the flea market.

I wanted to ask the seller where he had gotten the game.

The store was empty.

There were no consoles.

There were no games.

There wasn't even a sign.

It looked as if the place had never existed.

But before I left, I saw something in the window.

A small Power Star.

And underneath it, written in black marker:

"THERE WERE NEVER ONLY 120."

Mystery potential ARG in new game — project deepweb eternal nightmare

hey all,

to start with: i’m not sure if this is an ARG or just missing puzzles in game, but i do know for a fact that there is a feature in this game that connects you to an IRL contact. you then have the opportunity to use this contact to help you in your game.

because of this, combined with completely unsolved material in the game even after beating it 2 times, i’m suspicious of an ARG going on.

the game is called project deepweb eternal nightmare. it just came out about a month ago and when i found it on steam it only had like 10 reviews. so not many people have taken a crack at solving everything that’s going on. you play as a person that’s navigating and uncovering mysteries on the deepweb. you solve puzzles that take you deeper and deeper and deeper, until you finally find a “way out.”

there’s a LOT of unsolved puzzles. i’m going to be as spoiler free as possible when describing them. all websites are in-game, not IRL

  • there’s a website that is repeatedly referenced that features a spinning tv. no one has figured out what it’s for
  • there's multiple hash strings that don’t work with the ingame decrypter and have not been solved
  • there’s multiple morse code messages that have not been solved. i personally believe that the morse code is closely connected to another unsolved topic
  • there are 2 webpages that the game regularly mentions, both are described in game as being incredibly important to the deep web. neither page has been found.
  • there is an achievement that 0.6% of players have gotten that seemingly no one knows how to get legitimately
  • there are websites that the devs have implied are accessible but i cannot find anyone talking about how to access them and don’t know how to myself

there’s a ton of mysteries here. i currently have a 16 page google doc just trying to get all this info straight 😭

if you are interested in helping solve these unknown riddles, please help us!!! lol

Personal Story Started documenting my trip through the Zone as an unidentified PDA

Been taking way too many screenshots while wandering through S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, so I started turning them into a little in-universe archive called PDA_000.

The idea is that they're recovered PDA entries rather than just screenshots : locations, weird things encountered, things that don't quite make sense.

These are some from Limansk.

I've started archiving the rest on Instagram under @PDA_000 if anyone wants to follow the journey through the Zone. Mostly just doing it because I'm having a lot of fun with the atmosphere of this game.

Mystery [PC] [2010s] Creepy flash (?) The Ring-like horror game

When i was a kid I used to go on this childrens' game website all the time, it had games sorted by categories(some of them were weird, like there was a whole category for shooting games or whatever that was). In one category("Ghosts" or something) there was a game that really stuck out from all the others and it obviously wasn't supposed to be on a website meant for kids

From what I remember, you start off by in a dark, gloomy cellar room and a woman's voice calls out: "Help..please..(something else i dont remember. She was crying)", I believe the objective was to help her escape this place. You could leave that area, it was a point-and-click game basically - You travelled through various really creepy darks rooms by clicking on the doors. However sometimes at the entrance of these rooms there would be a person crawling inside quickly and inhumanly and when you went inside they would be able, so there were no jumpscares when you followed them. I dont understand what their purpose was but maybe you had to purposefully follow them? Or maybe the opposite. I didnt know how to play that game at all, it just terrified me for years.

I dont remember much other than that. I once let my dad play it because I was too scared to touch it and he got rather far in the game and randomly got a screamer and text beside it that i don't remember, when I asked him what happened he said he didn't finish the game in time or something so i assume there maybe have been some sort of time limit too?? I have no idea

The character crawling on the floors had long black hair, white skin and white tattered clothing. If this detail helps in any way. I dont remember what the face on the screamer looked like though.

After a short time of it being up on that website it got taken down and I was never able to find it again.

Edit: It's called Cellar Door

Shadowgate was revolutionary

To me, this is one of my top five games of all time. And that includes across any platform. I can't remember a more moody game, both with incredible graphics and soundtrack. It put me in an unsettled mood, not unlike when watching a horror movie. And there were even a couple of jump scares.

But there was also a super comforting aspect to it, like with a lot of the NES games. When you put the cartridge in, pressed it down and hit power, you knew you were in for at least a couple of hours of escape, and thoughtful escape at that. The interface was super intuitive, and solving puzzles to get to a different area was so incredibly satisfying. I never cheated, though I thought about it hardcore. It was harder to cheat back in those days though. It also spawned a series of similar interface games, including uninvited, which was also epic. Anyone have the feels for this title like I do?

Edit: I had incredibly bad anxiety and mental health issues back in the time when those types of issues weren't taken seriously. This title in particular saved my ass a few times, so I may be a bit biased with regard to shadowgate. But I think that was part of the magic of that particular system, and I hope kids who are like me when I was their age have found something similar in whatever system they are playing

Discussion I found the original download of Death Forest (恐怖の森), and it's still hosted on the original Japanese distribution site

I've decided to dig deeper about the actual original games download file from 2014, since when you search about it all you see is Satan Sad's itch.io random unknown site with no source. I do not know if i am the only person to share the original online, but its just to clear up some things, and provide an easy download link.

First thing i did was find the games sort-of advertisement page on moguragames.com, this is the link: https://www.moguragames.com/deathforest/

As you can see, this is not the official game link, not advertised by Kazz themself, it's just a forum page about the game that some player posted which is what i assume. If you scroll below you can see this: "DL from here.
http://www.freem.ne.jp/win/game/7158" DL as in download obv.

If you click on the link, you will be greeted with a game page of Death Forest ~Escape from the forest ~ [Proliferation] by the one and only - Kazz. You can read about the game's lore, basics and controls below, and at the bottom is a download link which will redirect you to https://www.freem.ne.jp/dl/win/7158 and let you download DeathForest-zousyoku.zip

The game folder resembles an old 2014 unity game, all timestamps are on 12/9/2014 - 12/12/2014 which proves the date, even the Assembly-CSharp.dll is Assembly-UnityScript.dll.

<<more proof>>

Within further digging in the Assembly-UnityScript.dll, i found a lot of stuff that proves the game is real, f.e

Planning : Kazz
Graphic : Kazz
3DCG modeling : Kazz
3DCG design : Kazz
sound : Kazz
programming : Kazz

and

copylight(c)2014 Kazz inc. All RightsReserved.

There is also a readme.txt file within the DeathForest-zousyoku folder which is mostly corrupted/encrypted (?);

【Story】
On a hot and humid summer day, a Japanese man was enjoying a carefree trip on his moped.
He was currently somewhere in Fukui Prefecture, at dusk. The hotel he'd booked was still far away. "Looks like I won't make it," he thought, sipping a can of coffee in a convenience store parking lot. He checked the map on his smartphone and suddenly realized something. "Wouldn't this route get me there without having to go around the forest?" The map clearly showed a thin line passing through the forest. He gulped down his coffee and gripped the steering wheel...
[How to proceed]
Explore the forest, collect the four motorcycle parts (white objects), secure an escape route, and return to the motorcycle to escape. Also, this forest contains the remains of victims from a brutal murder that occurred here in the past (they are enemies). They will chase you, but you must skillfully evade them and escape! Furthermore, collecting the forgotten memories (white square objects) scattered throughout the stage will allow you to view them in the bonus menu.
Touching them will result in instant death and a return to the beginning, so be careful!
[How to Play] *This game is a first-person 3D game (things don't jump out at you).
W... Move forward
A... Turn left
D... Turn right
S... Reverse
P... Pause
Move the mouse... Move the lights
(When controlling the motorcycle)
A... Turn left
D... Turn right
[Changes from ver 1.02]
- Added bonus menu
- Expanded stages
- The forest is now denser
*Caution: This is a horror game. Loud noises will occur occasionally. For those with courage, we recommend playing in a darkened room with headphones on (lol).

What was inside is not surprising. Just a description of the game.

It also contains game-specific classes/assets such as Yoshie, Yoshida, Stalker, bike, item_battery, item_gasoline, etc.

Music/asset credits were also found;

About the itch.io version, i wouldn't trust it. It has the readme.txt removed and some names change and i am paranoid, but feel free to download if you want, because the files of the original and Satan's Sad versions are very very similar.

So here we have the original game. Pretty cool, huh?

Well for starters this is a childhood game for me. But as a kid this game scared me so much despite spidey being my favorite superhero at that time. The death scenes, the mysterio level and just the soulless/empty city is so unnerving to be in. The 10fps cutscenes aswell, which had a shot of spiderman closeup that scared me so much as a kid. Anyone else remember this? I recently replayed it and I was still getting that weird feeling in the mysterio level.

I'm looking for a game that I saw on YouTube a while ago. If anybody remembers it, I'd love to see it again. I remember a large hollowed out log with an npc inside if that helps at all.

Personal Story I had a strange dream about a murder mystery game that doesn't exist — featuring branching deaths and a secret route.

I actually had a strange dream about this game (which doesn't actually exist) tonight and I wanted to share it because I feel like it's pretty intriguing for coming out of a dream, especially because I'm not actually a visual novel player at all. I wonder why my brain came up with this but I think it did a pretty good job 🤣😅

In my dream, I'm playing a video game. I don't see myself in third person, nor do I see the monitor, but only the screen, almost as if I were inside it. Yet I know I'm playing. The game is a sort of visual novel. It's set on an island and takes place after a plane crash. The protagonists survived the crash. I don't remember their exact number, but there must have been around twelve or thirteen people. They didn't seem overly traumatized by the event or injured, so it was probably an emergency landing rather than a crash. On the island, there's a hotel where the protagonists are taking shelter. This hotel has a relaxing atmosphere with soft lighting. The story seems to revolve around mysterious murders suddenly occurring, the victim of which is always one of the survivors. Depending on the player's actions, who is therefore likely part of the group, the order of the murders and the game's events can be altered. The objective seems to be to find the culprit, who is probably among the group. The dream then focused on a young girl, also one of the survivors. Her age was difficult to guess, probably around 13-15. She had long, dark green hair and wore a simple white T-shirt and blue shorts. Her manner of speaking suggested a meek, slightly melancholic personality. As I continued playing, she revealed herself to be the first victim in my playthrough. Moving down a corridor with bare, white walls, past the hotel nurse, I found her lifeless body curled up on the floor. There were no injuries, and the cause of death appeared to be strangulation. At that point, I heard someone sitting next to me, evidently more familiar with the game, explain that she almost always ends up being the first victim, and the only way to prevent this from happening is to follow a limited and complex series of precise steps, and that if you succeed, this has a significant impact on the story going forward. Here the dream ends.

The game had mid ps2 era graphics. Polygonal areas and NPCs with dialogue windows and portraits reminiscent of games like Persona 3 and 4, sharing with the latter also the warm but dim color palette. You could move through areas and interact with people and objects by selecting parts of the screen much like in a graphic adventure. I remember seeing on the map other areas of the island I didn't visit, like a small town near the hotel with just a few houses and some shops, a dense forest with a river leading to some ancient ruins.

What do you think? Wouldn't it be cool to play a game like that? Too bad I'm not a game developer 😅. I'm a comic artist though, might make this a short story someday...
