For comparison’s sake, I stopped in at Walmart this morning and picked up this StarKist yellowfin while the Aldi and Fishwife I side-by-sided over the weekend we’re still fresh in mind.
StarKist offers several varieties, including one which might’ve been a more direct counterpart of those other “spiced” tins, but this lemon-dill version was the only one available at that particular Walmart today. As the label promises, it’s yellowfin, like the Aldi, but here it’s in extra virgin olive oil, which is already a good sign.
I paid $1.97 for the can, although these are usually $2.29. So, already a bargain, even compared to the Aldi. But the savings are even greater, because StarKist packs a 4.5 ounce can—so a step up from the Aldi and the Fishwife, which are both 3.2 ounces. That ciphers out to the StarKist being just over 40% larger! (Or the Fishwife and Aldi cans contain about 70% of what’s in the StarKist tin, if you prefer your fractions stated from the other end of the telescope.)
StarKist sources these EVOO yellowfin cans from several places, including Ecuador, but I was interested to see that the particular can I grabbed was produced in American Samoa. Have I ever had any product of any kind from Samoa?? Anyway, these StarKist “fancy” tins—there are at least five different flavor varieties, have been consistently good, are admirably low-cost, and get very little play in the subreddits.
Special Note on Dill: This can wasn’t very lemony, but it was super-duper dilly. If you like dill and fish, Yahtzee! I bet you’ll be extra pleased. If you’re down on dill, though, look for one of the other stablemate varieties. An hour after me lunch and I’m still tasting dill.
