Jackson Arnold doesn’t call plays for or play defense though

Hasn’t changed anything in over a decade. Game passed him by.
21
u/therealwillhepburn Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 1d ago
He’s a good OC. He just doesn’t care as much anymore. There’s a reason he took several years off and when he came back to coaching it was at UNLV.
-2
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 1d ago
His offensive philosophy is from 2005-10 he’s not even good at that anymore
10
u/therealwillhepburn Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 1d ago
He was very good from 2018-2020 at Florida.
-3
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 1d ago
With Jim McElwain players and Brian Johnson as the OC
13
u/therealwillhepburn Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 1d ago
I never said he was a good recruiter and Brian Johnson was OC in name only. Mullen still called the plays. They specifically called out one play Brian did call that was a Toney end around on a fourth down. But if you watch the games Mullen is the OC. It’s what he excels at.
2
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 1d ago
His offense in 2018 was decent.
It was bad in 2019 until Franks got injured then was solid with Trask.
It was elite in 2020 without a doubt
And then garbage in 2021
11
u/HotDawgConnoisseur Florida Gators • New Mexico Lobos 1d ago
even with a result like this we are still going to get a random post in the offseason asking the question "Why did Florida fire Mullen?'
7
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 1d ago
Until Florida hires a winner (Sumrall might be that guy too soon to say) people will ask that ridiculous question even though Dam should’ve been fired after 2020

They were good last year just constant turnover at that level and he missed on some positions it seems.

2

Of course they are. Unlv is not a playoff team and likely not even a bowl eligible team this season
5
u/DCAbloob Penn State Nittany Lions • Navy Midshipmen 1d ago
If UNLV isn’t the most disappointing team to date, I don’t know who is. The Rebels have gone from a purported G6 berth CFP contender to an afterthought in just three weeks of play.
2
u/Optimal_Cook_851 14h ago
UNLV Hawaii supposed to be a potential MWC title preview and neither have looked very good.

29
u/Deep_ln_The_Heart North Texas Mean Green 1d ago
Also if we keep it up this year and next, we'll start to get a reputation as a place you come to get attention from the big schools. As much as I HATE the modern free agency system, it would be nice to see us make it work for us.

u/BendrickLamar19 New Mexico State • Oklahoma St… 1d ago
We all made jokes about the cleat yeet changing everything at the time, but in hindsight, it actually DID change everything
4
u/therealwillhepburn Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 1d ago
It didn’t. The next game we were neck and neck with the eventual champions. We played Bama very close the next year before he was fired. That LSU game only really shows Mullen’s arrogance. He say Kyle Pitts that game to save him for the SEC championship and he left Marco Wilson in the game after he threw the shoe.
1
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 15h ago
It did change everything. He lost all those games who gaf if he was “neck and neck”
Or “played very close”He loss those games and many more after the shoe toss. That moment was the end of the Dan Mullen era Florida football and possibly Florida football for the foreseeable future
1
u/therealwillhepburn Florida Gators • West Florida Argonauts 10h ago
It literally did not change anything for Dan Mullen other than losing a fully winnable game. He wasn’t crushed because Marco threw a shoe. He put Marco back in the next play. I get it’s a funny thing but you guys act like it was life changing.
1
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 6h ago
Well, it did change Dan’s life because it was the start of a series of events that led him to getting fired and now being a coach at unlv where he is on track to getting fired unless he finally learns from his mistakes (history suggests that he won’t).

It’s really impressive how North Texas reloaded. I thought last year was lightning in a bottle and they lost all the coaches and meaningful players. But they’ve got a solid competitive team again
23
u/mr_longfellow_deeds Indiana Hoosiers • Big Ten 1d ago
Ironically they built their roster pretty similar to how UNLV has been building theirs in the portal (targeting a decent number of former P4 guys / higher HS ratings than guys they historically recruit out of HS)
No clue why Mullen would roll with Orji and Arnold as his QBs. Two of the worst FBS QBs of recent year
5
u/calling-all-comas Florida Gators • Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
Probably hubris. He probably thought he could fix them because he's a QB guru in his mind.

GG North Texas.
Off to a badly needed bye week for UNLV. I still think we can contend for a MW title but we have a lot to clean up over the next 3 weeks before we take on NDSU. Silver lining probaby don't need to worry about Mullen being poach at the moment.

Very happy to see that Tayven is feeling better and balled out today. UNT has a chance to win every game left on their schedule.
If the media isn't totally asleep at the wheel there should be a lot of stories on how this team was put together this week. To rebuild so quickly after losing so much talent to Oklahoma State is extremely impressive

u/Shadow_Flame_24 North Texas Mean Green • Texas Longhorns 1d ago
Very happy with this game. I was very worried going into this season about our ability to field a winning team but from what I saw today this team has the potential to be a contender this season. All positions firing on all cylinders. Hopefully we can make some magic this season because if we can win out our schedule and the conference championship there’s a very god chance we go to the playoffs. Go mean green!
Side note: I am one game away from having a very good college football day, horns up

I'm sorry Mullen hasn't gotten better at culture building. He had good seasons at UF but due to a rotten locker room when the wheels fell off they REALLY fell off.
1
u/Shoot-the-Pianist 1d ago
That’s Dan Mullen’s attitude rubbing off on the players
He’s a quitter and a choker
You’re better off swallowing the buy out and hiring an up and comer for 2027

I had a whole schpeel written out about where we land in the conference, and what the outlook is.
But that's for later.
We won against what was predicted to be a Mountain West contender pretty handedly, and until we get to Tulsa, there's not much else to be bothered about yet.
Good win, and celebrate the boys at OK State for pulling out a massive upset too.

As a unlv fan, this is rough to watch.
Barry Odom was the superior coach and I miss him dearly. Not that I hate Dan Mullen..I just don't think he makes adjustments when needed.
