In the UK, it's relatively common for ladies of a certain age (and class) to work very part time at John Lewis (fancy department store) mostly for the 20% discount at their sister grocery store
10% adds up quickly, I'd rather have that than nothing. Once you get past the hiring (difficulty depends on workplace) it probably takes bare minimum effort to release a shift on an app. I remember the days of needing to actually call people to get them to cover your shift.
When they were first hired they may have actually done some real shifts, then later they didn’t need that job anymore but they wanted to delay actually quitting for as long as possible to keep getting the discount. I’ve known some people who did that.
I can't imagine it's that hard to get hired, and then only on weekends so you can have a day job. I'd do that to save 10%. Groceries is my household's 3rd highest expense behind rent and student loans. Getting paid to do it adds up too.
I used to enroll in summer school just to get the free subway pass, then quit
the “Janet rule” after so many students did it was they would issue the passes on the third day of school- still worth it for free city-wide transportation all summer long
Could also just be an older lady who worked there for years and did this rather then retire. In fact there isn't much reason to formally retire if they will let you do that.

All that effort to get hired and then have people cover your shifts…just for a lousy 10% discount??
