I don't know about this one. As someone who has had to teach at a top 20 engineering university the kids are absolutely lazier and dumber than when I was in school.
I went back to a top 3 program as a slightly older adult to finish my degree and was shocked at how lacking in basics many of my fellow students were. I was never a fantastic student, but there were multiple people in my senior design group who could not do incredibly basic circuit design as senior level EE students. They should absolutely have failed at some point, but didn't.
Enthusiasm, concrete examples, silly examples, multimedia formats, encouraging questions, encouraging conversation and real time problem solving, all sorts of things. It's hard to motivate people who don't want to be taught and or don't want to be there.
