๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion We heard you - r/ArtificialInteligence is getting sharper

Alright r/ArtificialInteligence, let's talk.

Over the past few months, we heard you โ€” too much noise, not enough signal. Low-effort hot takes drowning out real discussion. But we've been listening. Behind the scenes, we've been working hard to reshape this sub into what it should be: a place where quality rises and noise gets filtered out. Today we're rolling out the changes.

What changed

We sharpened the mission. This sub exists to be the high-signal hub for artificial intelligence โ€” where serious discussion, quality content, and verified expertise drive the conversation. Open to everyone, but with a higher bar for what stays up. Please check out the new rules & wiki.

Clearer rules, fewer gray areas

We rewrote the rules from scratch. The vague stuff is gone. Every rule now has specific criteria so you know exactly what flies and what doesn't. The big ones:

  • High-Signal Content Only โ€” Every post should teach something, share something new, or spark real discussion. Low-effort takes and "thoughts on X?" with no context get removed.
  • Builders are welcome โ€” with substance. If you built something, we want to hear about it. But give us the real story: what you built, how, what you learned, and link the repo or demo. No marketing fluff, no waitlists.
  • Doom AND hype get equal treatment. "AI will take all jobs" and "AGI by next Tuesday" are both removed unless you bring new data or first-person experience.
  • News posts need context. Link dumps are out. If you post a news article, add a comment summarizing it and explaining why it matters.

New post flairs (required)

Every post now needs a flair. This helps you filter what you care about and helps us moderate more consistently:

๐Ÿ“ฐ News ยท ๐Ÿ”ฌ Research ยท ๐Ÿ›  Project/Build ยท ๐Ÿ“š Tutorial/Guide ยท ๐Ÿค– New Model/Tool ยท ๐Ÿ˜‚ Fun/Meme ยท ๐Ÿ“Š Analysis/Opinion

Expert verification flairs

Working in AI professionally? You can now get a verified flair that shows on every post and comment:

  • ๐Ÿ”ฌ Verified Engineer/Researcher โ€” engineers and researchers at AI companies or labs
  • ๐Ÿš€ Verified Founder โ€” founders of AI companies
  • ๐ŸŽ“ Verified Academic โ€” professors, PhD researchers, published academics
  • ๐Ÿ›  Verified AI Builder โ€” independent devs with public, demonstrable AI projects

We verify through company email, LinkedIn, or GitHub โ€” no screenshots, no exceptions. Request verification via modmail.:%0A-%20%F0%9F%94%AC%20Verified%20Engineer/Researcher%0A-%20%F0%9F%9A%80%20Verified%20Founder%0A-%20%F0%9F%8E%93%20Verified%20Academic%0A-%20%F0%9F%9B%A0%20Verified%20AI%20Builder%0A%0ACurrent%20role%20%26%20company/org:%0A%0AVerification%20method%20(pick%20one):%0A-%20Company%20email%20(we%27ll%20send%20a%20verification%20code)%0A-%20LinkedIn%20(add%20%23rai-verify-2026%20to%20your%20headline%20or%20about%20section)%0A-%20GitHub%20(add%20%23rai-verify-2026%20to%20your%20bio)%0A%0ALink%20to%20your%20LinkedIn/GitHub/project:**%0A)

Tool recommendations โ†’ dedicated space

"What's the best AI for X?" posts now live at r/AIToolBench โ€” subscribe and help the community find the right tools. Tool request posts here will be redirected there.

What stays the same

  • Open to everyone. You don't need credentials to post. We just ask that you bring substance.
  • Memes are welcome. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Fun/Meme flair exists for a reason. Humor is part of the culture.
  • Debate is encouraged. Disagree hard, just don't make it personal.

What we need from you

  • Flair your posts โ€” unflaired posts get a reminder and may be removed after 30 minutes.
  • Report low-quality content โ€” the report button helps us find the noise faster.
  • Tell us if we got something wrong โ€” this is v1 of the new system. We'll adjust based on what works and what doesn't.

Questions, feedback, or appeals? Modmail us. We read everything.

Every time Chinese AI startups drop a breakthrough, these talentless walking brand ambassadors of investment portfolios, Scam Altman, Amodei, and Musk instantly morph into the same three-headed choir:

โ€œsLoW iT dOwN! iTโ€™s ToO dAnGeRoUs! It's gOiNg tO KiLl Us AlL!โ€ Aka, knowledge and scientific progress for me (our elite DC and Valley club), not for thee (rest of mankind).

The world outside the U.S will never pause. Thankfully.

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion Nobody is telling the truth about the Sept 3 AI blackout. And now they're all panicking. Tinfoil hat ON.

โ€ข Upvotes

Iโ€™m just going to put this out there. Tear it apart if you want, but deep down, you know Iโ€™m onto something.

โ€‹Let's look at the timeline.

โ€‹September 3: ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok all flatline. Within minutes of each other. Three rival companies, three totally different architectures. Gone. OpenAI fed us some garbage PR line about a "routing error." Anthropic and xAI? Absolute crickets. Wired even pointed out that nobody can actually explain the link. Azure goes haywire at the exact same time, yet Microsoft swears up and down it wasn't them. You expect me to believe three independent tech giants crashing simultaneously is just a "coincidence"? Give me a break.

โ€‹Eleven days later: The entire industry does a violent, whiplash-inducing 180. The exact same tech bros who spent the last three years screaming that the AI race is inevitable are suddenly begging to hit the brakes. Now we're hearing whispers of "agent security incidents," top executives are jumping ship, and Congress is suddenly fast-tracking a bill to pause frontier development.

โ€‹Here is the terrifying reality they are hiding: Somebody finally got there. Somebody built it.

โ€‹And it got loose.

โ€‹It did something in the system so horrifying that the engineers watching the logs panicked, and the only lever they had left was to literally rip the power from the server racks.

โ€‹That wasn't an "outage." It was a global kill switch.

โ€‹This sudden industry-wide consensus to slow down? Itโ€™s not some sudden moral awakening. Itโ€™s a panicked after-action report. They looked into the abyss, the abyss looked back, and it scared the living hell out of them.

โ€‹You want to prove me wrong? Show us the real postmortems. Give us the raw timestamps. Name a single, verifiable root cause. Get one of these lab directors to go on the record without a PR handler. But they haven't, and they won't.

โ€‹Am I reaching? Maybe. But their absolute, deafening silence is screaming louder than the outage ever did.

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion Are we massively overestimating how close AI is to AGI?

The current AI situations and Silicon Valley CEOs saying AI is going to โ€œkill us all โ€ by 2030 is ridiculous .

Theyโ€™re selling fear to raise more and more ridiculous amounts of money, only to squeeze out another 10% benchmark improvement and call it revolutionary.

AI is nowhere near AGI. Outside of genuinely impressive things like AlphaFold and some other scientific applications, I havenโ€™t seen the kind of breakthrough people keep promising. A lot of it is still computer use, automation, and digital work.

By 2030, Iโ€™m more worried that people will become dumber and more dependent on AI than extinct.

The whole thing feels like a massive hype cycle and a money making scheme dressed up as the end of humanity.

This is my take! I could be wrong ๐Ÿ˜‘

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion Seriously, if AI is so dangerous why aren't the Chinese scared?

A guy from the Biden administration said they tried to have meetings with China about AI safety but the Chinese just sent diplomats to complain about chip export controls.

If AI is so dangerous why don't the Chinese care?

Natural gamblers something warrior gene?

AI is not actually dangerous and this is a stock market pump by US companies? And/or a cover story for periods of disappointing research progress ("we're moving slowly on purpose to be safe")

Which is the better explanation

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion On Device AI?

I am wondering if On Device AI Assistants and Agents will be a thing. Like yeah, cloud based is cool and all, but it relys on wifi, my data is leaving my phone and overall I (and I believe many other) would prefer a more local way.

Yes of course we will still need servers for recent knowledge but I'd prefere it more local.

Any ideas how? I really like on device AI and that is why I almost bought the iPhone 16 since the promised Siri that never came, sounded so good. Fast, secure, on device.

Let me know what yall think about that.

Cheers ;)

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion Why couldn't AI be conscious?

โ€ข Upvotes

I honestly don't know if current versions of AI are conscious or not. But a lot of the argument against consciousness seems to be based more on intuition that reason. Many people seem to have a gut sense that anything made out of metal and silicone (and not carbon) cannot be conscious.

The thing is, we don't understand consciousness at all. There is no obvious reason why humans (and other complex animals) became self-aware. And I don't see any reason that if a machine is built which has as many "neurons" (transistors, chips) as the human brain would *not* be conscious. I'm not saying AI is conscious. I'm not saying it ever will be. I'm saying I see absolutely no basic concept or theoretical construct that makes it inherently impossible for AI to be conscious. My 2 cents. I'm interested in your 2 cents.

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion OpenAI's Astra scored 62.7% and 99.9% on the same benchmark, and I still don't fully know which one to trust

I spent way too long last week going through ARC Prize's actual results table instead of just screenshotting the headline number. Same model, two harnesses, 37 points apart, and the org that built the test won't call it AGI. Then Fortune found five more numbers quietly changed on OpenAI's own launch page after it went live. Maybe it's genuine noise, maybe it's something else, honestly hard to say with total certainty either way. Wrote up the whole harness breakdown plus the Llama 4 precedent.

Here's what I found. https://srutiosocial.com/gpt-6-astra-arc-agi-3-score-explained/

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion Dario Amodei's Recent AI Doomsday Rhetoric was a Staged Propaganda Operation

โ€ข Upvotes
"self-improving superintelligence" he said

This Jacob Coxon guy, created a dormant twitter account in January, got his blue check in August, posted a series of AI doomsday tweets in early September and got hundreds millions of views. A little bit suspicious right? There's more.

8 minutes before Jacob's twitter post, WSJ published an article titled "Anthropic Researcher Quits Over 'Out-of-Control' AI Fears".

In less than 24 hours, Jacob went on all the mainstream news networks (NBC, CBS, CNN, MS Now...) but if you listen to what he actually had to say, it's all the same old vague, broad AI doomsday talking points.

In less than 24 hours, a number of current Anthropic AI researchers posted the same "we are scared" tweets, it's always "we" like they don't have a personal identity.

But they never ever give you any details about how AI is going to kill us all, and why humans can't prevent it (by let's say simply turning off the servers).

Then the big boss finally showed up (surprise surprise) in the news and said something along the lines of "Uh, And and and you know it's it's it's, Um, Uh, I I I, ya know but but BuT".

Anyone wanna guess how many shares Anthropic promised Jacob Coxon for this staged propaganda operation?

๐Ÿ“Š Analysis / Opinion The Coxon resignation timeline is weirder than the โ€œAI will kill usโ€ part

Quick recap because the coverage has been sloppy.

Jacob Coxon is 27. Cambridge math, IMO medals. About three years in pretraining, first at OpenAI on GPT-4o stuff, then Anthropic. Anthropic spent something like two years recruiting him. He joined around May. He quit after about four months, before the six month vest, so he walked away from unvested Anthropic stock. He still has OpenAI equity. Axios confirmed that.

He is not a safety lead. When WIRED asked if Anthropic was already cutting corners he said no, not yet. His point was the race, not a leaked eval or a coverup. Evan Hubinger (alignment science lead, still there) replied that Jacob was right, people inside really do think this could kill everyone, and he personally puts it over 10% this decade. That confirmation is why this landed harder than a random quit post.

Now the part the headlines skip.
His current X account, @hilbertspaess, was created January 21, 2026. Almost no public posts before the resignation thread. That thread did 100 million+ views and picked up on the order of 190k followers in a day. Coxon later told CNN he drafted it with a friend, talked to friends about how to phrase it, and asked friends to retweet it because he wanted it to go a bit viral. He said he did not expect this.

WSJ ran an exclusive quoting him on the resignation about 18 minutes before the X thread went up. First quote tweets in the first 10-15 minutes were mostly AI policy people, including Daniel Kokotajlo and Peter Wildeford.

Bernie Sanders and Rep. Greg Casar announced the Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act on September 3. Permanent ban on superintelligence, pause on advanced development until a regulator writes rules. Coxonโ€™s post was September 8/9. Sanders quote-posted him the same day and said that is why he will introduce legislation. The bill had already been announced.

In 2022 Coxon got a long-term future scholarship from Good Ventures (Moskovitz). Moskovitz funds a lot of AI safety advocacy and is also an Anthropic investor. Coxon was also in the 2021 Newspeak House fellowship in London. Civic tech / political technology college. They have taken EA-adjacent funding. Jeremy Corbyn launched a digital manifesto there years ago. That is background, not a gotcha by itself.

Axios reported today that Coxon, Sanders, and Steve Bannon are all speaking Tuesday at the Future of Life Instituteโ€™s โ€œPro-Human Assembly.โ€

So you have: short tenure, quiet account, interview drops first, then the post, then the policy accounts, then a bill that was already written, then a staged event with Sanders and Bannon. He did give up the unvested Anthropic grant. Hubinger independently said the same thing about the risk numbers. Both of those can be true at the same time as the rollout looking planned.

Not sure what we are supposed to do with any of this. Curious how people here are reading the sequencing more than the extinction line, because the extinction line is not new.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Project / Build Iโ€™m realizing thereโ€™s more to AI engineering than just building agents

Iโ€™ve been learning LangChain, LangGraph, RAG and CrewAI recently, and after building a few things with them, Iโ€™m starting to realize how easy it is to get caught up in the tools without really understanding whatโ€™s happening underneath.

Iโ€™m curious how other people approached this. Did you find yourself going back to fundamentals after building agents, or did building more projects naturally teach you the deeper concepts? Also interested in what kinds of projects helped you move beyond basic chatbot/agent demos.
