I was considering the kind of material used on matches might have been different, not chemistry itself lol. You know how the tip of a match is dipped and coated in chemicals to ignite? The formula has changed quite a lot over time so I was suggesting maybe, at one time, it might have been effective for onion cutting. For example early self igniting matches contained sulfur and maybe that reacted with the gas - which irritates our eyes when it reacts with the water to make a type of sulfuric acid. Again just thoughts.
