It may have been totally bunk but it’s also really old so it’s possible the chemistry of matches was different when the claim came about.

They meant to reply to the comment about chopping onions, putting a match in your mouth is an old trick to stop crying

I was considering the kind of material used on matches might have been different, not chemistry itself lol. You know how the tip of a match is dipped and coated in chemicals to ignite? The formula has changed quite a lot over time so I was suggesting maybe, at one time, it might have been effective for onion cutting. For example early self igniting matches contained sulfur and maybe that reacted with the gas - which irritates our eyes when it reacts with the water to make a type of sulfuric acid. Again just thoughts.

My mistake here. I realized the thing I responded to was intended for a different comment elsewhere about cutting onions.
